So Mac Wingate is a likeable character and a real tough fellow. He gets thrown into a World War II Casablanca full of spies and traitors with nothing but a few bucks and the clothes on his back, but manages to survive and complete his mission, which starts out as one thing and ends up being something else entirely. But he rolls with the punches. There's a whole lot of action, although some of it is just action for action sake, but it's well done. Supporting characters are interesting if somewhat stereotypically drawn. I enjoyed it. This is the first in a series and I'll probably read another book or two to see how things go. There's actually excerpt from book 2 at the end of this one that gives you a taste for what will happen.

Great start to the Mac Wingate series! When I first picked up this book, I expected it would have a bit more full-on military style action. Although it starts out that way it quickly moves into more Humphrey Bogart (aka Casablanca) style territory, then a bit of Lawrence of Arabia, before touching on some James Bond-ish vibes, all while maintaining the military action hero feel throughout. The plot is mildly confusing at a couple points and the ending a bit implausible with one too many twists. But overall this is a quick, fun read. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this short-lived series of books (11 in total, I believe) and seeing how Mac Wingate helps win WW II.
