From the time he was a boy, he knew he was something special; different. When he committed his first crime and got away with it, he became something else. Jay had been called many names, The Marcavillian Hunter, Sunshine State Killer, Eastside Rapist, but for him, he was always the shadow in the night...the figure just out of normal perception. Overall, a pretty solid read. I've given it four stars, but in my estimation, it's closer to four-point-five, and the reasons for that are at the bottom. We follow the exploits of a young man named Jay, who likes nothing more than pretending he's a soldier at war, only this is peacetime and he's stalking innocents in the Floridian suburbs. Great story. But let me shoo the 400 lb. gorilla in the room away before I elaborate.

The grammar is HORRIBLE. It's as if someone threw commas up into the air and wherever they fell, by golly that's where they would stay. And there are too many missing commas to mention. This book is very obviously based on The Golden State Killer. The book delves into how his crimes may have started and progressed as he got older and bolder. This is a very interesting (fictional) account of the killer.

The story is told from the killer, Jay's point of view. The reader gets inside his head as he fantasizes about the things he's going to do, the commission of the crimes, and his internal battle about the things he does. Friedman makes an interesting choice to let Jay tell the sto

I loved this book. It's a tale of obsession, rape, murder, tragedy, and heroism. In most murder mysteries, the police detective is the protagonist, and the killer is the antagonist, but in this book the roles are reversed. In a sense the author creates an eerie guided tour through the mind of the serial killer. I wouldn't just recommend this book to people interested in police investigations, and in serial murders, but to anyone interested in psychology, and the never-ending debate over "Nature ...more
