The Child's Curse by Amanda Roberts is slim historical novella that is a prequel to the Touching Time set of books. Although I have not the rest of the series, I found The Child's Curse to be an interesting tale of magical realism within Qing Dynasty China.

The story introduces Sparrow (later to be known as Jiayi), who lives on the streets as a pickpocket. The descriptions of her tragic life are, unfortunately, probably quite historically accurate. Specifically when it comes to the hardships of w

Sparrow's father left the family to join the Boxer rebellion, fighting for China against the foreigners and never returned. This left the family to fend for themselves, young Sparrow stealing and pickpocketing to feed her mother, her 5 year old sister and Pheasant, the baby girl who was still nursing. In order to pay the rent for the hovel in which they lived, her mother had to grant favours to the landlord each month. But when the Empress returned and the foreigners decided to start leaving Chi ...more

This is a prequel that fills in gaps and explains how and why Jiayu becomes who she is. Her family is poor and the only way they survive is by skills that Sparrow (Jiayu) learned. Then her gift awakens and log becomes complicated. This is another incredible story in this world of traditional China. The gloriglorious colour, poverty, life as a poor child are almost too real to be comfortable. An incredible story line, great characters, realistic settings make this book and this series a great adv ...more

Origin stories are always fascinating, I think, especially when some special ability is involved. What does it feel like to go from ordinary to gifted – or cursed? This is the prequel novella for the Touching Time series and tells how Jiayi first experienced her psychometric powers and how she came into the service of the Empress. We see glimpses of the busy city, including the Legation where the "foreign devils" live, through the eyes of a young thief who is the sole support of her unprotected ...more

This story is the precursor of the "Touching Time" series which I was also allowed to read with an ARC. While reading that series, I regularly asked myself the question; Where does Jiaya come from? This book tells the story of Sparrow who becomes Jiaya.
How she grows up as the eldest daughter of 3 children, how she helps her mother to support everyone and when she has her first vision after touching an object. And how she is eventually sold on to the Empress

An asset to read when you want to read

Prequel to the Touching Time Series
This novella is the prequel to the Touching Time series. I wish I had read it prior to reading Book 1, The Emperor's Seal. I love the idea of the series and the author is doing a great job with it! I find Chinese history very interesting and the physic aspects of this story are great! I am excited to read the next book! I received this ARC book for free from Booksprouts and this is my honest review.

I really enjoyed this short prequel to the Touching Time trilogy. It was a short, easy read, with a lot of explanation leading up to the trilogy. Sparrow/Jiayi was such a complex character, and it was interesting to see how her story began.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a prequel to The Emperors’s Seal. It really provides a substantial amount of background and information that really helps with the full book. I found it interesting to read about a culture that probably
Happened in China concerning impoverished women. I recommend this book.
