Downfall

Rate this book
Solomon Sanders doesn’t have time to fall in love. Until a stunning, skittish, single mother forces him to pause and recognize just how empty and hollow his busy life has become.
From the start, it’s been ingrained in Solo’s DNA to fight.
Fight for what he believes is right.
Fight for the people he loves.
Fight for the traces of good in a place which tends to be filled with a variety of bad.
Fight for survival, so at some point, his life will quiet down and find a normal pace.
He wasn’t ready for the impact his secretive, shy, obviously out of place new neighbor was going to have on him. And never in a million years was he prepared to fall head over heels for her and her young daughter.
Now, he’s facing the most important, and the hardest fight he’s ever fought… the battle to win Orley’s damaged heart.

Orley Vincent’s heart is full of fear, leaving no space for love. Until a big, brash, brawler of a man forces his way in and makes her realize facing her fears is the only way she can ever be free.
From the start, Orley was groomed to believe she wasn’t good enough.
She wasn’t the perfect daughter. Or student. Or girlfriend.
But, she has always been the best mother she could be to her daughter, Noble.
Keeping Noble safe has always been the one thing she was determined to do, which ironically, is how she ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, living next door to an unlikely hero. Orley’s a woman on the run. She had no idea her frantic sprint was going to land her in the tattooed arms of a man ready to teach her how to fight for herself… and for love.

Solo’s a man that’s got his plate full. He’s got no time for all the little things you’ve got to do when you’re trying to make a relationship work, yet he manages to make time for his neighbor Orley and her cute little girl. Orley has hit rock bottom and life’s just been throwing jab after jab without giving her a break.

I liked these two together. They were a testament to life bringing you what you need when you need it and not when you think it’s convenient to get it. I enjoyed the transition from strangers to more and the added elements brought on by a child being a factor in the relationship.

Ms. Crownover did a great job of incorporating her other series and I enjoyed the glimpse into their lives in parallel. The plot was interesting though some parts felt like a bit of a stretch. The writing and pacing were on point.

I was expecting so much more from Downfall. Especially when it is Miss Crownover. The story is not entirely bad but it is dragging. The emotional conflict is being played over and over again.

I would say this is vanilla NA romance. The bad guy is typical father of the heroine. While the hero plays the knight in shinning armor. The coneection is lukewarm. Needs more dramatic moment.

Overall OK read.

My first Jay Crownover book and most certainly my last one. I'm not kidding here peeps.

DNF @ 54%

This book is pointless. It is dull and I was bored out of my mind. It was also predictable.

Just my opinion here.

First I feel like I need to confess I have not read any of the welcome to the point series. I got this from KU thinking it was a complete standalone then I saw it ties in to that series I got a bit nervous but having read it as a standalone I can say it was awesome. I am sure if I had read the other books I probably would have been excited figuring out who the boss and the devil were but now I am just anxious to read there books.

See I even somewhat randomly one click KU books so I went to get one to read only to be informed I already had 10. So I figured I would read them and now I am kicking myself that I didn't do it earlier. I loved it. It was so well written and the characters were awesome.

Solo was just gah. I can't even try to explain how beautiful he is. He had such a heart of gold all wrapped up in his prickly barbed wire exterior. But he was so sweet to Orley and I loved how he loved Noble. And quietly took care of everyone around him.

And poor sweet Orley. She was the ultimate mumma bear and my mind was racing trying to guess what she was hiding from. And I have to tell you I was miles off. Noble was so adorable I can see why Solo fell in love with her so quickly.

But seriously this was an awesome standalone read I had to hold my eyelids open to finish because there was no way I was going to sleep without these guys getting their HEA.

I read RULE by Jay Crownover and loved that book; it really was captivating. However, this book was boring and slow. I tortured myself so that I could finish it. For me, it lacked depth, soul and heart. I don't know how I can describe it but it kinda lacked color; I felt as if I was watching a black and white film.

It wasn't convincing; it didn't feel real. Maybe it was because the characters were flat so I couldn't connect with them or maybe it was due to the dull story-telling of the writer.

In my opinion, the background story of the heroine was over the top and the hero sounded very reluctant to spare time for the heroine at first; therefore, when their connection was that quick afterwards, I just didn't believe it. And when they became a couple, I still didn't feel any chemistry between them. That's why, I stayed detached from the characters and the story all along. I finished the book by skipping the borderline boring parts and enduring the less boring ones.

All in all, it was disappointing for me.

Quick tips:

- Dual point of view
- Safe: No cheating, no separation, no OW/OM drama
- 236 pages

I’m extremely bummed out that I didn’t love this book! I’m usually devouring Jay Crownover’s work, but this one fell flat for me. I’m not sure if it was the lack of depth, complexity, or details, but I couldn’t connect with these characters. I just felt blasé about the whole thing. It had some exciting parts, some sexy parts, but in the end I wasn’t 100% invested in their happily ever after. That being said I might be a little bit picky when it comes to her books because I’ve loved EVERYTHING that has come before this. In no way am I giving up on this author...this one was just not my cup of tea.

Gah!! Jay Crownover's stories are like Candy for me. They are so delicious and addicting and you can never stop wanting more!! When I read the blurb to Downfall I knew I had to read it but the fact that it was a true standalone set in the world of The Point was the cherry on top!! Gah!! This story was absolutely fabulous. It was sexy, intense, compelling and so addicting. I never wanted it to end!!

When Soloman "Solo" Sanders met Orley Vincent and her three year old daughter, Noble, he could never have expected that his world was about to change. With Orley forced in hiding from a powerful enemy, she has nothing left in her but to trust the dangerous and intense people of The Point to help protect her daughter. What follows is a sexy story filled with all the amazing characters I fell in love with mixed with a hot and sexy hero and a single mother who would burn the world down for her daughter.

I absolutely loved being back in this world and seeing how once again Crownover delivered a story highlighting that hope, love, loyalty and trust can be found even in the most darkest people and places. Overall, this story was amazing and one of Crownover's best! Bravo! 5 stars! ~Ratula

Struggled to finish this one! I typically love Jay Crownover’s stories, but Downfall lacked emotion and chemistry and heart! I wanted to love it, but it just didn’t work out for me. That said, I’m really really really looking forward to her new series coming soon! I’m so excited about that!

You know how some romance novels talk about how the hero has this mythical unicorn Johnson that can do things no other mortal man can do? (Don’t worry I’m not going where you think I’m going I’m going.) Well, Jay Crownover is a mythical unicorn author who soothes and excites with her words (crap, I said I wasn’t going there, and now this is getting awkward), but who also has a sense of danger and adventure combined with a massive amount of heart. This woman can tell stories, man. Badass stories.

Downfall sucked me in and kept me there so much that I don’t even know how to write a review. Solo is an astonishingly AMAZING hero—a hero in the true sense of the word—and Orley is a fierce, fighting mama bear determined to protect her cub—her daughter Noble. Basically this story is so well-written that the fact that it’s a story falls away, and you’re just living it. Yeah, I’m gushing, but it deserves it. Downfall delivers. Romance, sucker punches, aches, bruises, and the best happy ever after because not only did they work for it, but they DESERVED it. Just read it, okay?

4.5 stars. A single mom and a hero with a big heart but with a rough look. This was pretty much what I love in a romance, great chemistry, intruging plot with a huge part of tension with it but a romance that goes up and above. I enjoyed this very much but still didn't quite go up to five stars but I still highly recommend it for romance lovers that likes it to contain seriousness as well.

5 SMOOCHES!

I adore Jay Crownover’s writing, I love her characters and her stories, I love how she makes me feel and think. She draws me into her characters’ struggle with edgy, gritty, deeply emotional stories intermingled amid a steamy, hard-fought romance. Her stories consume me, her characters stay with me, and I look forward to a new story from Jay with kid-in-a-candy-store anticipation. I know she’s going to wreck me in the best way, and while I may not walk away from the experience unscathed, I will be satisfied, fulfilled and hungry for more.

Downfall is a complete standalone, and while set in the same world as The Point series, Jay Crownover has taken great care to ensure that this book will not spoil those books and that it can truly stand on its own. Sexy, suspenseful and heartfelt emotion, Downfall was an engrossing story about right triumphing over wrong—even if the good guys had to do a little bad along the way.

Solomon ‘Solo’ Sanders—aptly nicknamed for the loner he was—was the quintessential Crownover hero. Tattooed, rugged, rough-around-the-edges and blunt, he was a bad boy with a heart of gold from the wrong side of the tracks. He had his limits, though, and his morals, an unwavering sense of justice and right versus wrong usually won out. He did test those boundaries, and he also wasn’t averse to using his fists to make his point. Solo’s plate was full caring for everyone around him, so it’s not really surprising that he had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, especially where Orley was concerned. Their connection was instant, buzzing and electric from the start, the kind of chemistry that is impossible not to act on. In Orley and her sweet daughter, Noble, Solo found things he didn’t even realize he’d been missing or even wanting.

Orley Vincent, a young single mom from the right side of the tracks, was on the run and hiding in plain sight in the one place she thinks her past won’t think to look for her. The problem was that it was obvious to everyone that she didn’t fit in. But there, amongst the perceived dregs of society, on those mean, unforgiving streets of the city, she learns her life’s most valuable lessons. Born and bred into a life of privilege in a place most would consider safe, secure and civilized, Orley was surprised to find so much good in a place that she had always considered bad. It took giving up everything and starting over in the city for her to learn how to appreciate the things that mattered most in life and to find real love.

A story about learning to trust, about finding the good in wherever you may be, and learning to fight for what is right, Downfall was a passionate and sweet romance that drew me in from the first page. I devoured it in a day, and I simply didn’t want to put it down. I loved Solo and Orley and everything about their unlikely yet perfectly matched pairing. Five smooches from me for Downfall by Jay Crownover!

She joked that falling in love with her had been my downfall, but she was wrong. Falling in love with her was my salvation.

Jay Crowover is one of my insta read authors so the minute this hit KU, I downloaded it. And I was not disappointed. Jay is known for her gritty romances and Downfall was no different. The story of a girl running from her past and boy doing what it takes to protect the streets he loves.

Solo was raised on the streets but thanks to a determined mother, he also knows compassion and has a good head on his shoulders. He wants so much to just be able to take care of his mom and keep his head above water. Then he meets Orley and everything gets turned upside down. Here's a girl who is so obviously out of her depth and running from something. But Solo is sucked in by her innocence and not to mention her adorable daughter. Soon they become part of his family and he finds he will do anything to protect her. Including putting his own life in danger.

I adored Solo. I loved how much of a solid head he had on his shoulders. He knew what he was working for and what he was willing to do to get it. It was important to him to do things right and I adored how he loved so fiercely. I liked Orley too, but I really wanted her to trust what was in front of her more. I understand why she wasn't quick to trust Solo, but she was extremely judgey when it came to people just trying to help her. But I did love her tenacity to do things herself and the love she had for her daughter.

Having read her other series, I recognized some of the characters who weaved their way into this story but you by no means need to read those first. This book reads as a standalone and can be taken as such. But I did like how everything connects and wonder if Crownover will do more this way.

Orley is on the run with her daughter from her family, her stepfather specifically. From rich and affluent to a dear in the headlight's single mom living in squaller. When one night she is almost attacked and likely raped by a derelict, a hero emerges from the shadows.

Solo, a big, muscled, tatted, sexy, scary man. He saves her. She runs never even saying thank you. Luckily, she will get more chances as it seems every time she is is danger or need, he comes to her rescue. Not only that, she is his neighbor.

Soon she is developing feelings, while he is too. For her, for her daughter. When he learns of her plight he is in deep and will do anything to keep her save. Even if that means owing people, including the Devil, himself.

I liked this book. I would of loved it had it not been for the "clean" way it ends and the bad made good. It was close to a 4 but I had to be honest with my 3.5 and push the stars to a 3.

Je crois que l'on commence avec ce tome à atteindre les limites de The Point. Jay Crownover a une plume efficace comme toujours, mais elle use un peu trop les ficelles des survivants de The Point.

Il est temps de passer à autre chose, et heureusement le roman était court

Great characters and story. I love single mother romance. The way Jay Crownover never makes her relationships overly angsty feels so organic and makes reading that much more pleasurable. This was my first foray into the Pointe. Can't wait to get back.

This book ties into the Breaking Point series but is very vague in the other characters because she wrote this book as part of her newsletter. It was a good story it just had trouble keeping my interest. I'd pick it up and then put it back down. I thought the heroine was a bit stuck up at the beginning and I never really warmed up to her. I loved the hero but he wasn't enough to save the heroine for me.

This series of hers was never really my favorite. You won't miss much if you skip this one.

I love the fact that people can jump right in and read this one without having read The Point books, but that fans can figure out who all the players are making the story more fun.

Orley is the new girl in a run down apartment complex in The Point. It is obvious she does not belong there and is running from something. She just cannot seem to catch a break until Solomon Sanders comes to her rescue...literally. And he just seems to keep showing up for her.

Solo does not think he has time for anything else in his already crazy, busy life, but somehow he ends up being there when Orley needs him. And soon he starts wanting to be there more and more. On the one hand Orley is timid and fearful, but she is also a protective, mama bear ready to do whatever she has to in order to protect her child. And Solo starts adding an extra layer of protection over both of them. I loved Solo. He is big, intimidating, loyal, and has a good heart. They have great chemistry and a connection that just sparks.

They come from different worlds, but are living in the same one now. She had no idea she could find good in such a dark place or dark time. But the Point is a scary and unpredictable place and she can't hide forever. And what happens if her past catches up to her?

This is a sexy, heartfelt, suspenseful read about finding hope and love when least expected. It's about fate, home, and fighting for a future. At first they have to fight for time together, but then trust, and eventually he will have to fight to be able to keep her as well as keep her safe. They never saw the other coming, but really saved each other in ways. His life was full of obligations, but no joy until she came along. And he really is her and her daughter's hero and protector, and at least has some connections in the Point. It never hurts to have a hero who has some villains on his side. I loved being back in this gritty world again.

Holy cow this book felt like it’d never end. Why the heck are they acting like they live in an apocolytipic city or something? Acting like every corner is a bad person and every guys trying to rape the heroine. It was so strange.

I enjoyed Orley and Solo’s story. It was sometimes raw, sometimes sweet, but overall, I was kept invested in the final outcome. In some ways, these two were complete opposites, yet in others they were very similar. I also adored Orley’s daughter Noble! She was a charmer and I loved how quickly she had Solo wrapped around her pinkie finger!

I had the impression other characters have their own books, however, no one was mentioned by name, so I do believe I’m going to have fun poking through Crownover’s backlist to discover who’s who.

I received an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review. Review and blog tour can be found on *Milky Way of Books*

This story, as told in Jay's introduction at the beginning of the book, is set in the world of The Point series. Since I have pretty much read everything, I knew what was happening and what was going on with the code-named key characters. If you haven't read the series, then there's no problem because this is a good start if you are a first-time reader of Jay's works.

I loved Orley and Solo. They seemed so different and yet they fit perfectly in each other and in a cruel city which shows no mercy. Their moments were sweet and the setting around them felt very realistic. Not to mention that they have great chemistry. ;)

You know those days when you have so much to do, and you need a good audiobook to get though all your work? Something that keeps you pulled in, but doesn't have a ton of angst. Something that has an easy storyline, while still makes you wonder what is going to happen? Yea, that was the day I had and this was the perfect book for it. It was a quick 7 hr audio.

I loved Orley, Solo and Noble (the little girl). Orley was an amazing mom, especially for being so young. Solo was so protective and was drawn to his girls from the start. Their chemistry was instant, and I loved them together. Solo is not a true anti-hero, but he works in a chop shop and is close with some serious anti-hero hotties from another series.

I can always count on Jay Crownover to give me a story that is going to make the day float by while I'm locked into her incredible writing.

Buona lettura.

Jay Crownover is an incredible author and one of my favorites because of the unique way she manages to create worlds that readers never want to leave! She brings us back to the Point with a brand new cast of characters and a few familiar faces that you might recognize. Of course if you haven't had an opportunity to read Welcome to the Point and The Breaking Point series yet don't fret because you can still totally enjoy every moment of this story without them!

Downfall is Solomon "Solo" Sanders and Orley Vincent’s story, but I feel that sweet little Nobel Vincent stole the show! They come from two different worlds...Solo has lived in the Point his entire life and Orley's running from the gates that have kept her captive her entire life. He's perfectly content with his life and has no plans of getting involved with anyone until this beautiful woman and her little girl move in next door. She doesn't belong there and it's easy to recognize that. Suddenly he's their protector and will do anything to protect them...no matter the cost.

This was a breathtakingly captivating, sexy and heartwarming story with suspense intertwined throughout each page. My heart is still beating in overdrive after devouring this amazing read and it's certainly one of my favorite reads of 2019! Jay Crownover is an extraordinarily talented author and she never disappoints when it comes to her storytelling ability! I strongly recommend picking up this book right now!

I started reading Downfall in Jay Crownover's monthly newsletters. I stopped about midway because I wanted to read the story all through. When I got a reviewers copy of the book with the beautiful swoon-worthy cover I knew I'd made the right choice.

Downfall is set in The Point, which if you haven't heard of, you are seriously missing out on some amazingness. Getting to see past characters again just had me so giddy.

Orley left everything behind to take care of her daughter. The money, the power, and her family. All of it. She knew her daughter would never be safe and so she escaped into the city, to The Point, where she is now hiding for the one person who wants her daughter. Orley never expected to find a place in the crime-infested place or to find love, but hunky neighbor and Solo keeps coming to her rescue.

Solo is doing everything he can to stay clean in a city of crime and filth. Solo doesn't have time for love and to be taking care of beautiful Orley and her daughter. When a fight goes wrong and he finds out Orley needs him, he'll do everything, including owing the most dangerous men in the city to keep Orley and her daughter safe.

Loved this story from start to finish. This story made me wanting to re-read the entire Point series and wanting more of their story than ever.

Downfall is amazing. The perfect addition to The Point world and I couldn't be more excited to see more stories that bring these characters close to us again. I loved this and if you enjoy any type of Jay Crownover book, you'll definitely want this book in your collection.

I read so many bad reviews about this book but this never stopped me to have a go...

Yeah, it wasn't so much drama as I used to find in all of Jay's books; meeting the bad guys from The Point was definitely making this book enjoyable.

I'm glad I could read a love story based in The Point, a story where some good can happen too not only horrible things like crime, drugs or illegal fights.

JC is still my favourite author and I'll never have enough! Always counting the days down till another of Jay's book is released.
