הספר הוא מסמך מרתק על האירועים שהביאו למעצרו של חודורקובסקי ול-12 שנות מאסר שנגזרו עליו בכלא בסיביר, ועל ההשלכות הדרמטיות שהיו לאירוע זה על דרכה של רוסיה.
מרטין סיקסמית הוא אחד המומחים הידועים בעולם לנעשה ברוסיה של ימינו. הוא הצליח להגיע לאנשי מפתח רבים ששיחקו תפקיד מרכזי בדרמה הזאת. הספר נכתב כמותחן עוצר נשימה, אך למעשה זוהי בחינה מדוקדקת של המאבק שמנהל פוטין על השליטה במאגרי הנפט העצומים של רוסיה באמצעות מניפולציות ותמרונים פוליטיים, קנוניות, הונאה, בגידה וריגול.

This is a good insight into Putin’s Russia. However, not the very best one. Martin Sixsmit is a little bit biased, to my mind. Facts are pretty accurate, but the whole narration seems to be written with intentional drama.

This book is an insight into Putin's Russia. How the system works and how Vladimir's model of democracy operates. Clearly he does have an advantage if he controls the judiciary who get a call from the Kremlin to tell them the finding of the court case they are adjudicating. In some respects, you would have to consider Mikhail Khodorkovsky naive, to think that the Kremlin would allow Yukos Oil to do a deal with the Americans and make it an international company and a model of Russian democracy, when clearly they had their eyes on the enormous profits it generated. In addition Khodorkovsky was looming as a credible political challenger for Putin. So it was an easy strategy to put him in jail and grab the oil. Deed done. Now through proposed legislative changes, Putin has assured himself of having a longer term than the Tsars and his cohorts who have pocketed millions of oil money are counting their Swiss bank balances. Why, I don't know as you can only eat three meals a day and sleep in one bed, but the greed of man has no limits.

Don't ask why I am interested in things that seem so distant from the daily life of most of us. Now that's what interests me - Putin's oil. The truth is that in this sense I may have been a little late or that I could say that I knew in advance the end theory of the book.

Nevertheless, this is an excellent book - a fascinating documentary about all the oligarchs of Russia, some of whom are no longer living there and others no longer live in general. The book tells of corruption in Russia and how Putin returns the Russian to the Stalin era. It is incredible to see how the Kremlin tramples on human freedom and rights gained in the fall of the Communists. This is a must-read book for every amateur of history, and in general for general education.
