It’s been months since I read the last book, or what I thought was going to be the last book in the Royals’ world and if it’s not for a friend at work, I wouldn’t have known we got more books. I swear, I’m not the worst at keeping up with the good stuff.

Nevertheless, I needed to dive back in and boy, did I miss the world.

I enjoyed the fuck out of this story. It was short but full of emotion -I wish it was longer! Savannah and Gideon’s relationship was something I always wanted to read about and now I got the chan

The heartbreaking story of the older Royal brother Gideon and his girlfriend from school, Savannah.

The story takes place in two different time periods:

-When they first met at Astor. Gideon’s mother was still alive and miserable and she was making the lives of her sons miserable, too. Gideon’s father was never present. Dinah was trying to get her claws into Gideon. And Savannah was far too innocent.
-3 years later. When Savannah is on college visit at State. Gideon obviously ca

It was great to see what happened between Gideon and Savannah for real. Gideon has always intrigued me and I was happy to get his side of things. I always love reading about my Royal boys! A quick read and nice addition to the series.

Tarnished Crown is a BONUS novella that takes place between Twisted Palace (The Royals #3) and Fallen Heir (The Royals 4). If you have not read books 1-3, this will spoil those books and probably won't make much sense. I do not recommend reading this as a standalone!

If Reed is the broody Royal, and Easton is the fun Royal, then Gideon is 100% the swoony Royal. In the first three books he definitely seems more Reed-like with the moods and the broods, but in Tarnished Crown we get the TRUE Gideon, and I abso

Wow...I had no idea that I've been reading this chapter a week novella since the end of March until the authors put out the last chapter. Five months is a long time to stretch out a book!

As I was trying to recall things, I felt a real sense of being discombobulated. It made me wish I had considered that they would actually put out the novella at some point and just wait. But it's a done deal for me, however, if you haven't started it, you won't have to worry about that!

Okay. I'm not really feeling this book. Maybe because I've read Fallen Heir before this and that one disappointed me so much that I guess I just lost interest in this series. I couldn't care less about the characters and I just really read this because I've had a crush on Gideon from the first three books. I was kinda excited to finally know his story here but I feel like the Gideon Royal in here is so different from the one I've read in the first books. I don't know.

I have to say I'm disappointed.

The Royal's series has always been trashy fun. They're not the best written books but they are fun as fuck!

But this one.....

I was bored.

The characters were boring.

The story was boring.

Where was all the fun bat shit crazy shit stuff?

This book didn't have any teenaged strippers or crazy murder plots. It was just meh!
Ever since reading the Royal trilogy I needed to know Gideon and Savannah’s story.

And as expected their story was filled with drama, betrayal, groveling, and teenage angst.

If you like teenage drama, high school drama and break-up stories, this is the right novella for you. I should also mention that the original format was a newsletter serial, so there will be an obvious disconnect between chapters.

Tarnished Crown doesn’t have the flow of a full novel. And it definitely feels like a novella, a little rushed at the end, and it’s m

Unfortunately, this book just wasn’t as good as the first three books in the series! It wasn’t bad but it just wasn’t as interesting and entertaining as the other ones. I liked reading more about Gideon and Savannah’s relationship but at the same time I also felt like I just once again got to hear everything that we’d already learned about them in the other books plus a few more details and how they’re doing today.

So I was just expecting a lot more from this but it was still a decent book which

I stay by GoodReads ratings. It was ok. I might be in the minority when I am saying this... I was disappointed. Within the first three books, we get this strong and independent image of Savannah to now be ruined by this installment. I get the feeling that this was done to serve the fandom, which is not automatically a bad thing, but it was not served right. It takes time and patience to rebuild a relationship which had been broken to suc

I loved this so much! It was so cute and it eventually put a huge smile on my face. The plot itself wasn't original but for me that seemed to be unnecessary in order to make it a lovely story.

I love love love my Royals and this series but this just didn't add enough for me to be worth it. The past/present format annoyed me and the breakdown of their relationship didn't interest me in the least...and not enough happened in present to keep me engaged. I know it's TO BE CONTINUED so this rating may change as I read more.

Tarnished Crown is #3.5 in the Royals series.

This book was originally sent by email by the authors one chapter a week. It was also up on Wattpad. And now it's on amazon. I decided to read the entire story once all 21 chapters were completed.

The story is told in alternating POVs - Gideon Royal and Savannah.

The book goes back and forth between the present (when Gideon is in college and Savannah is 18) and 3 years ago (when they met/started dating).

This was a solid book, but it just couldn't get me the same way as the rest of the series did. Gideon and Savannah are a cute couple and I hoped they would get together, but this just seemed so rushed, and it also felt like they just pushed aside their issues and moved on, instead of resolving them. I would have liked if Dinah would have gotten some kind of punishment for her destructive part in this love story. Apart from that one could recognize the style of writing from the previous "Royal"-b ...more

Oh man, it's been a long while since I left the Royals back, so half of the names and the incidents in this one were long forgotten. I was trying to remember and some things came back to me, while others didn't. Also the timeline confused me a lot and I think these were the negative aspects of this novella. On the plus side now, I really enjoyed Gideon grovelling to get get not only forgiveness by Savannah, but also to get her back. It was nice, I liked these flashbacks, although I think I neede ...more

Buddy read with Raksha

Are you shocked as much as I am at the rating? I am freaking shocked myself!

So before I go into my review, I will begin by saying this:

I had made a promise to myself long ago never to be one of those people that doesn't criticize a favorite author no matter how much I loved them. I vowed I would never, ever allow mere blind loyalty to cloud my honest opinions and I am holding true to that promise.

So, as much as it pains me to do this I have to unequivocally state how utterly disappointed I was with "
Tarnished Crown" - the story of Gideon and Savannah.

This was supposed to be a novella that centered on the eldest Royal, Gideon and Savannah, the girl whom he had fallen in love with but betrayed with another. We learned some bits and pieces of their broken romance in the previous 3 books in the "Paper Princess" series which really whetted my appetite to learn more! Because this is after all an Erin Watt story, right? With all the drama and the sexy that I've come to love and can't get enough of!!

The intent of this novella was to give us reader's the whole scoop and a front row seat as to how Gideon was going to win Savannah's heart back! I was all in! My buddy reader was all in! We were excited as any Royal fangirl would be because we get to see Gideon spin his Royal magic to win the girl back, right?

Boy! Were we bamboozled!!!

To be fair, this started out pretty good. We get a lot of background from Gideon's and Savannah's POV's as they tell their story in alternating timelines between the past and the present. I loved this! We get to read when they first meet and how despite what others think, Savannah catches the eye and heart of Gideon Royal, one of the most sought out guys at Bayview High. We get to know Gideon better as an individual overall. We also learn much about the stresses and responsibilities he takes on in dealing with his alcohol and drug addicted mother and younger sibling. We didn't get much of this behind the scenes in the other books so this was insightful and added a level of understanding to Gideon's character and his choices.

We also get to meet a different Savannah than we did in the first 3 books- before she became jaded and cold-hearted. This was super! Again, since we didn't know much about Savannah's character previously it was nice to meet her anew, to get more of her personality and how her relationship developed with Gideon in those early days.

It was really great to meet new characters from Gideon's past and the present! Gideon's friends from High School and college added a lot of funny moments and were one of the few highlights in this story.

But alas, somewhere in the middle of this story, the bottom fell out and I felt like I was Alice in Wonderland falling into a world of crazy!!!

This novella, mid-way through had more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese! This story supposedly takes place right after the events of "Twisted Palace".

There was hardly any cohesion between the two books. The story lines seemed scattered and at times left me scratching my head. Relevant threads were either untouched or utterly ignored which made absolutely zero sense!

Another thing- our main characters really didn't "connect" and I thought they were a much better couple/story when they were apart than they were together!

But what was more upsetting was the egregious altering of one of our main characters, Ella! WTH? Who was this person? This was NOT the Ella we met and came to love! She played a vital role in Gideon's and Savannah's story and you would think this would be developed or mentioned? Apparently the author's must've forgotten what Ella's self-sacrificing contribution had accomplished but absolutely glossed this over!

We had held out high hopes for this read which at first did not disappoint. But, as the weeks passed (this story had been posted weekly on Wattpad) and with each new chapter that went from bad to worse and read like horribly awful fanfiction that made me want to chuck my tablet in the trash, I grew not only disgusted but shocked that such brilliant author's as Erin Watt would put out this garbage for their readers!

Recently and announcement was made that this will be available as an e-book. After inquiring through GR if any new content would be added to this story, the author's answered by stating that this will undergo a final edit but the content would remain basically the same. Not what I had hoped to hear!

I would've truly wanted the author's to do a major overhaul of this story. It had such great potential but fell way short of what I expect an Erin Watt novel to be.

Skip it!
Not worth your time but if you're one of those people that must read it've been warned!
3 stars - one for the fans

This novella is one for the Royal fans. The story of Gideon and Savannah has been hinted at throughout the series, and this gives us glimpses into them together, shifting between the past and the present as we see moments of their relationship before it all fell apart, and then Gideon’s beautifully romantic grand gestures to win back the love of his life.

Gideon and Sav have an interesting dynamic. They got together in high school when Gideon was a senior and Savannah an eager young sophom

It could have been better. The first half is really good, the second one not so much.
I would have loved to pay to get a good novel who would have answered all the twists and secret about Sav and Gid then have a free novella.
I wish we could have seen more about the past and have a better resolution in the present, that was too rushed.
All things considered Tarnished Crown is funny and sweet, fast paced and really intriguing, as every novel by Erin Watt.

I was looking forward to reading Gideon's and Savannah's story, while I enjoyed it for the most part I found it at times frustrating because I felt it moved slow but that's most likely because it was released as a serial in the author's newsletter. I enjoyed the ending but it felt like something was missing.

Read as a serial through author's newsletter
