Die Stadt: Ein Märchen

Rate this book

Many works, including Siddhartha (1922) and Steppenwolf (1927), of German-born Swiss writer Hermann Hesse concern the struggle of the individual to find wholeness and meaning in life; he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946.

Other best-known works of this poet, novelist, and painter include The Glass Bead Game , which, also known as Magister Ludi, explore a search of an individual for spirituality outside society.

In his time, Hesse was a popular and influential author in the German-speaking world; worldwide fame only came later. Young Germans desiring a different and more "natural" way of life at the time of great economic and technological progress in the country, received enthusiastically Peter Camenzind , first great novel of Hesse.

Throughout Germany, people named many schools. In 1964, people founded the Calwer Hermann-Hesse-Preis, awarded biennially, alternately to a German-language literary journal or to the translator of work of Hesse to a foreign language. The city of Karlsruhe, Germany, also associates a Hermann Hesse prize.

A short summary of the rise and fall of a metropolis, told in a fairytale-like voice. It's the combination of that voice and the realist criticism of (imagined) endless progress that makes this short story work. Of course, Hesse favors nature's cycles of birth and death, but there is something comforting in the idea that the end is not something scary, but absolutely normal. A nice read for a calm evening, preferably in a really old, comfy chair.

I read a lot of Hesse when I was much too young to appreciate good writing - however, it is very important to begin early before one is subjected to crass best sellers.

Reading it is as delightful as watching a wonderful episode of a TV drama - rich and active writing.

Civilization turns to dust.

The city that grows to the heavens, must have its foundation in heaven.

A short read, clearly out of a different time, illustrating the transcience of all things and beings and the struggle between human and nature.

Not his best work in my opinion, iris or the flute dream are better stories! That being said it was still fun and easy to read.
