Got an ARC of this. Kord is the genius behind 'A Super Upsetting Book About Sandwiches,' which sold me immediately on this title. Going by Melissa Clark's theory that if it sounds bad, it's got to be good, I tried the chicken cooked in chocolate milk. It was great, as were the chicken and beans. This is a creative, flavor-smart collection of recipes for the home cook who isn't afraid to get a a little wild in the kitchen.
Perhaps the chicken dishes I like would be considered boring, recipes which the book claims not to have.
Only a few of the dishes looked good. I tried the Chicken & Black-Eyed Pea Stew with Smoked Paprika, but the directions didn't seem to correlate with what I was seeing in the pan. It turned out okay, though it didn't have much flavor. My family liked it, but I wouldn't make it again, or waste any more time on this book.
If you like to read cookbooks as I do, this is a great one. Kord is not only a gifted chef, he produces a talented and fun read. It has an entire chapter devoted to "Chicken to Eat When you Feel Sad. " Also, it encourages you to try a recipe because it will probably make you a "more understanding, kinder person." He calls his wife a "chicken-eating saint" for testing all of his recipes. I have made exactly 1 recipe fromt this book (Spicy Chocolate-Milk Simmered Chicken) which was featured on an NPR radio show. It was unexpectedly fabulous. Even if I never make another one of the recipes, I feel this book is money well spent for the entertainment value in the reading. But, honestly, I probably will be trying many more of these. I want to read his other book about sandwiches now. This book is a definite recommend.
Made the black-eyed pea stew, which tasted fine although I really needed a bigger pan (keep in mind that you're supposed to have something shallow enough to cook the stew plus 4 chicken thighs on the stove and then throw it all under the broiler for 5 minutes). Some fun recipes in here, plus good step-by-step instructions on how to break down a chicken/spatchcock it and other fun stuff.
Lots and lots and lots of chicken recipes! Most look good. Gotta try some before the rating may go up or down. Who ever thought of poaching chicken in chocolate milk?? Hope I don’t end up de using that the recipe was a huge waste of lovely chocolate milk
I loved reading this book - the author is very opinionated and very amusing. I hate to return it to the library because I want to try almost all the recipes!
I liked this cookbook a lot! The pictures are lovely, the instructions are easy to follow. Reminded me a lot of my trusty Six-Ingredients-Or-Less: Chicken Edition cookbook (which is my absolute favorite).
