Le 10 avril 1912, Michel Navratil et ses deux fils embarquent sur le Titanic. Tous trois partent vers l’Amérique à bord du plus beau paquebot du monde surnommé « L’Insubmersible ». Mais le 14 avril, à 23 h 40, le Titanic heurte un iceberg. La tragédie commence pour tous les passagers et Michel n’a alors plus qu’une idée en tête : sauver ses enfants. Lolo a quatre ans, Monmon en a deux : pour l’Histoire ils seront désormais « les Enfants du Titanic ». Dans son récit, Élisabeth Navratil mêle réalité et fiction, s’appuie à la fois sur les souvenirs de son père, l’aîné des deux frères rescapés, et sur une riche documentation sur le naufrage du plus célèbre des paquebots.

Elisabeth Navratil's grandfather, Michel Navratil, and her father and uncle, were aboard the Titanic on the night the world's unsinkable ship sank. The story of the tragedy is now very much a part of Elisabeth's own life story. She has realised her dreams of a career in music by becoming an opera director. Elisabeth has directed works such as Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, and as well as a production called Mozart Titanic.

Étant un grand fan de l'histoire du Titanic et de ses deux frères jumeaux, il me devait de lire ce livre. On voit que l'auteure à fait des recherches pour écrire ce livre. A travers ce roman elle a voulu rendre hommage à son père et son grand-père.

Tout commence le 10 avril 1912 quand Michel Navratil embarque avec ses deux fils à bord du Titanic, réputé pour être insubmersible, pour l'Amérique mais quatre jours plus tard en pleine nuit le paquebot heurte un iceberg. Michel n'a qu'une idée en tête sauver ses deux fils Lolo et Monmon.

Ce livre à été un grand coup de cœur à lire et m'a permis d'en savoir un peux plus sur le naufrage de ce géant des mers. Pour les fans du Titanic lisez ce livre.

Le fait que Michel Navratil a choisi d’embarquer le Titanic en enlevant ses enfants de leur mère est quand même surprenant.

Un très beau "récit romancé", mélange de vérité et de fiction, retraçant l'histoire de deux enfants français qui ont survécu au naufrage du Titanic. Très facile à lire !

Το μυθιστόρημα αφηγείται τη συγκλονιστική, αληθινή ιστορία των αδελφών Λοτρέτ του τετράχρονου Μισέλ και του διετούς Εντμόντ. Η ιστορία ξεκινά λίγο πριν το παρθενικό ταξίδι του Τιτανικού. Ο πατέρας των παιδιών, ο Μισέλ Σουάρ-Λοτρέτ, ένας Γάλλος μόδιστρος, έχει χωρίσει από τη σύζυγό του και αποφασίζει να απαγάγει κρυφά τους γιους του, με σκοπό να τους μεταφέρει στην Αμερική. Επιβιβάζεται στον Τιτανικό με ψεύτικο όνομα, καταβάλλοντας το εισιτήριο της δεύτερης θέσης.
Η αφήγηση κορυφώνεται κατά τη διάρκεια του μοιραίου ταξιδιού και, κυρίως, μετά την πρόσκρουση στο παγόβουνο. Στον πανικό που ακολούθησε το ναυάγιο, ο Μισέλ πατέρας αφήνει τα παιδιά σε μια γυναίκα σε μια σωσίβια λέμβο, επιστρέφει στο βυθιζόμενο πλοίο και βρίσκει τραγικό θάνατο. Τα δύο μικρά αγόρια, μόνα και χωρίς να μπορούν να επικοινωνήσουν (καθώς μιλούσαν μόνο γαλλικά), διασώζονται και μεταφέρονται στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Η δεύτερη φάση του βιβλίου εστιάζει στην προσπάθεια αναγνώρισης των παιδιών, τα οποία μένουν για μέρες άγνωστα ως τα "Ορφανά του Τιτανικού" (φωτογραφίες τους κυκλοφορούν στις εφημερίδες). Χάρη στην έρευνα και στις φωτογραφίες, η μητέρα τους, η Μαρτσέλ, που είχε μείνει στη Γαλλία, καταφέρνει να τους εντοπίσει και να διεκδικήσει την επιστροφή τους.
Η κεντρική ιδέα του βιβλίου είναι η αναπαράσταση μιας τραγικής οικογενειακής ιστορίας που εκτυλίσσεται παράλληλα με τη μεγαλύτερη ναυτική τραγωδία της εποχής, αναδεικνύοντας τον πόνο του χωρισμού, την ελπίδα της επανασύνδεσης και την απίστευτη δύναμη της αγάπης.

The author did her best to convey the memories of her father and uncle, but had to invent a lot to fill the gaps (because, of course, the protagonists were toddlers when the events happened). That’s where the novel’s weakness mostly lays: some of the fictive/imagined elements look out of place or downright silly (e.g. the ship’s lights remaining on after the ship broke in two) compared to the rest of teh story.
