Mallory McDonald #11

Red, White & True Blue Mallory

Mallory is in Washington, D.C., with her fourth grade class. She can't wait to see the famous monuments and museums. But from the moment she sets foot in the nation's capital, there's one thing she doesn't see much of . . . her best friend. Mary Ann is spending so much time with the new boy in their class, she's forgotten all about being partners with Mallory. And when Mallory wanders off to wiggle her loose tooth, her tooth isn't the only thing that is lost! Will Mallory's trip to Washington turn out to be one she'll always remember or something she'd rather forget?

The book I'm currently reading is called Red, White & True Blue Mallory by Laurie B. Friedman. This book is just like Laurie's other book, Heart-Heart With Mallory. And if you read my review on that other book you would understand more. This book is about a main character, Mallory, who just entered the 4th grade one book ago. In this book, Mallory and her class gets to go on a field trip for 3 nights in Washington D.C.!

Mallory has a crush on a boy named, C-Lo ( Carlos ) in her class, but the bad news is that she thinks he doesn't like her back. Mallory thinks he doesn't like her because Mary Ann has a crush on him too and she does literally, everything with him. In the part of the book that I am on, she is starting to wonder if Mary Ann is still her best friend.

My opinion about this book so far is that its kind of good kind of bad. Here are the reasons why it is good. #1, it is a good story-line and such. #2, (to some people this is good or bad) you actually learn some facts about things in Washington. This is the bad things list now. #1, the pages are now "Dear Martha" instead of dear diary. It is dear Martha because Mallory's teacher, Mr. Knight, gave the class journals to write in for facts and other stuff. Of corse, Mallory thought that dear journal sounded wrong so she named her journal, Martha. And as you can probably tell, I do not really like books that has Dear... every page.

Page graphics: None! 😱
But, when Mallory signs off each entry, most are signed as “⭐️ Mallory” but sometimes there are themed ones. A was face when mary announced left her, an apple, different animals while at the zoo, rocket ship, dollar symbol while at the money factory, shopping bag, moon to say goodnight after she got home, kiss/lips to say goodbye to the journal

I love all the facts about Washington DC. I’ve been there twice so i know some of the facts but it’s all interesting. And lots of places i didn’t get a chance to go to. I wish i had someone going me all sorts of facts

I think it’s fully whenever Mallory short hands something because she’s running out of time but then explains what it means anyway. Which ended up taking longer

It seems fitting that i finished this book during memorial day weekend. It would have been more fitting during 4th of july. This year is america’s 250th birthday.

- Must keep a journal and turn it in at end of trip. Calls it Martha
- Mr knight gave 5 rules which basically all mean don’t get lost
- Interesting facts about all the building they visit
- Mary ann is spending lots of time with c-lo instead of Mallory since they are buddies
- Think they should name coffee shops based on what the most delicious item is
- Mary ann is spending every possible second with c-lo instead of Mallory, her best friend and field trip partner
- Mallory is obsessed with her loose tooth
- Visit Mount Vernon where George Washington lived
- Washington monument
- Mary ann is actually staying with Mallory now. What happened?
- Lincoln memorial
- Apple pie
- Jefferson memorial
- C-lo asked Mary ann to be his girlfriend
- Zoo!
- Mr knight has this trip packed so tight that they don’t have time for the gift shops. Eating lunches on the bus. I’d be surprised is he even lets them use the bathroom
- American history museum
- Natural History museum.
- Looking at skeletons and their teeth. Asked Mary ann to come to the backroom and pull her tooth out. She said no. Mallory got lost
- Mallory couldn’t come up with her interesting things list for the air and space museum because she was so distracted thinking of the trouble she’s gonna get in
- Talk with mr knight. Mary ann comes in and takes blame too. They finally make up
- “Money factory”
- Learn money is made of a thin cloth. Joke about writing to fashion fran to make clothing out of money
- Finally get to shop for souvenirs. How did i not know that souvenir is the French verb of to remember???
- Mallory and maryann create a scrapbook

This is book number 11 in the Mallory series. I had never heard of them before this book. In thsi book, Mallory takes a class trip to Washington, D.C. She is so excited to be sharing this trip with her best friend Mary Ann. However, she finds that Mary Ann is spending the trip with her new boyfriend. Mallory is supposed to keep a journal of her trip and all of her experiences. This was an okay book with some okay historical information. I couldn't really get into it because I kept thinking that elementary kids could relate to it better. I am recommending it to a friend who teaches fourth grade. I think her kids will really like it.

I read this to my 2nd grader and pre-school daughters. They are fans of this series and my 2nd grader enjoys the "Dear diary" style of writing. Not only does this touch on the dynamics of friendship but I appreciate that it listed interesting places to visit in D.C.

To summarize, Mallory and her class take a trip to Washington D.C. Her partner is her best friend Mary Ann, who happens to take interest in a boy during the trip. Mallory struggles with feeling left out and partner-less, which she writes about in her travel journal. The class visits different tourist attractions and monuments in D.C. and part of her assignment is to write what she finds interesting about those places.

I like the character, Mallory. She has a whole series. This story focuses on a field trip to Washington, D.C. There are some great tie ins to the curriculum. Although,... it is really a girl story with best friend troubles.

I like this book, you learn about not getting mad about your BF,
or other people. I got sick of hearing the word "My loose tooth" though. But other than that it's a good book. The Mallory Series should have a place in kid's books just like Judy Moody.

This book has interesting facts about Washington, DC. It makes you feel as if you are also on the school trip, along with Mallory and her school mates. It's a fun read.
