The Chosen: 40 Days with Jesus

Rate this book
You are called by name.Every follower of Jesus in the Gospels had a not-so-great “before.” A brash fisherman. A pious religious leader. A demon-possessed woman. A thieving tax collector. But God’s love reached beyond the brokenness and called them before His transformative work of redemption even began. And He called them His own. He’s still doing that today.Encounter Jesus the way His followers did. In The 40 Days with Jesus, explore the moving backstories of Simon Peter, Nicodemus, Mary Magdalene, Matthew, and other recipients of Jesus’ miracles. You can’t help but identify with their recklessness, rough pasts, religious piety, desperation for life change, and, ultimately, their redemption. Written to accompany the hit multi-season series about the life of Christ, each of these forty devotions contains a Scripture, a unique look into a Gospel story, suggestions for prayer, and questions that lead you further in your relationship with Christ. Experience the transformative love and power of the One who sees past your “before” to the “after” He can redeem you to be.

Get to Know the People around Jesus

The focus of this devotional is different from what I’ve seen in this area of books. Each of these 40 devotions focus on someone around Jesus Christ while he walked the earth. Each devotion is focused on someone like the paralytic or Nicodemus or one of the disciples or others who crossed paths with Jesus Christ.

Each devotion begin with a short Bible verse, a devotion followed with a “Prayer Focus” or brief prayer and ends with “Moving Forward” or three pointed application questions for the reader. Amanda Jenkins, Kristen Hendricks, and Dallas Jenkins have done an excellent job with writing THE CHOSEN: 40 DAYS WITH JESUS.

For example, Day 14, Boldness begins, “Andrew was an early adopter of the ask, seek, and knock principle. As far as we know, Andrew was the first of the twelve disciples to ask Jesus for anything.” (Page 64)

The imitation leather cover and the sharp pocket-design even including a ribbon marker make THE CHOSEN an exceptional book. Simple and thoughtful words combine with an attractive look. I highly recommend THE CHOSEN.

Let me start off by saying, if you have not watched The Chosen, please look it up! You can find it through the Chosen app or on YouTube, and it is such a great series!

The Chosen devotional is a small hand sized book in brown imitation leather. As the title suggests, there are 40 devotionals that are generally 3-4 pages long. The size of the book and length of the devotionals made it excellent to carry along with you and read when you can during a busy day. The devotions go along with The Chosen series, but can definitely be enjoyed and understood even if you have never watched the series. Each devotional ends with a prayer focus, which is a prompt to help you pray. Then, there is a moving forward section with three reflection questions to help you apply what you read to your life. It has a ribbon marker to keep your place.

I have really enjoyed reading through this devotional. It is one that I will read multiple times, and carry in my purse. This is book one, and book two is being released in February of 2021.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, BroadStreet Publishing, in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

This was a great book to listen to. Husband and wife narrating it. The male narrator is the producer of the TV series " The Chosen ". The TV series is epic. It's the meat and this book adds the potatoes. The only negative is they ask questions at the end and it's too fast to even answer them. The woman narrator read in today's lingo. Made it really cool to listen to.

Our family loved the first two seasons of The Chosen mini-series. It especially was a home run with our kids, as it lead to many great discussions as they saw the stories and people of the Bible brought to life. Of course, we had to spend some time helping them determine fact from fiction (the tv series takes some creative liberties, in my opinion).

When I saw this devotional, I thought it would be a great devotional to do with our kids on our car rides to school. And, yes, the messages were great...however, the reading level was at a high level - and made it a bit tricky for our kids to read aloud while I drove (I often had them spell a word so I could tell it what it was). Our kids are 13, 11, and 8 - and are all reading above grade level.

I am all for my kids enhancing their vocabulary, but sometimes the wording was clunky and thesaurus overkill. Or, they introduce a Jewish term that I didn't even know what it meant, and it kind of diminished the lesson (I wished there had been a glossary).

The questions at the end were nice - and lead to more great discussions.

Overall, it is a GREAT devotional. I just need to encourage the authors to make a devotional for kids ;) (and maybe they have, and I just need to find it!)

Not all devotionals are created equal. Some are rich and dense and require a lot of engagement from their readers. Others are such brief little snippets that I’m often left wondering what the point was, why something so short and surface-level was seen as necessary. This first volume of The Chosen devotionals falls comfortably between the two extremes.

The Chosen has put out devotional books to correspond to each season of the show, building off of the episodes but standing steadily on their own. I found this first volume a quick, easy addition to my Bible reading each morning, but with enough substance to actually feel worthwhile. Some days were stronger than others, but all in all, I enjoyed my time with this little book. I liked the inclusion of a prayer focus and points to ponder moving forward that were included at the end of each day’s reading. I’ll definitely be picking up the other volumes of the series.

Side note: These are lovely little books, with faux leather covers and sewn-in ribbon bookmarks. They make excellent gifts!

This book was amazing I thoroughly enjoyed it! It’s definitely on my top five reads of this year. This book really help learn more about God and Jesus and and one of my favorite verses that was put in there was Matthew 25:35-40!! It gave me A new perspective on how to treat people even if they are not being nice to you . Working at grocery store you get a lot of mean customers and it is some time … okay a lot times, it’s hard to treat them nicely .
I highly recommend this daily devotional , it was really her or me and life altering ( in a way that opens your eyes to how God and Jesus loves us and what they have in store for us.

I loved this devotional. It packs a good punch without being too exhaustive and has great follow-up prayers and actions. God divinely used this book to encourage me on the day my child was unexpectedly born three weeks premature. The passage was labeled “Precious” and was about Jesus telling the children to come to Him and how they are precious to Him. Reading that on a day filled with uncertainty was providential, not to mention my child’s name means precious. I appreciate the work the authors did to create this and how the Lord is using it.

Great devotional! However, it wasn’t my cup of tea. Maybe you will enjoy it more than me, but I found it lacking. 5 stars because I didn’t find any fault in it but in reality it was a 3 in my life.

I loved this devotional book because it followed the chosen series really well. Each day had a really good message and you could tell that it was written with a lot of zeal for Jesus. I would highly recommend this even if you haven’t watched the chosen yet.

Very good but had a few flaws...

...or maybe the flaws are in me. I wasn't inspired to dig deep into the question that are at the end of each chapter. I just finished my first read and I'm going to start again and really force myself to dig deep.
The second issue I had was a bit of pretentiousness with some of the readings. There's definition a trend to use the $10 word where the nickel word would work as well. I think I have an above average vocabulary but there were many words that I wouldn't consider everyday words and a few I didn't know at all. Now, I have nothing against expanding my vocabulary but this book wasn't the ideal place to accomplish that.
I was very tempted to just give five stars and a rave review just because the book is associated with the series, "The Chosen." Unlike the book the series brings Jesus and his followers into my living room and my life in a profound yet simple way. I already loved Jesus when I started this series. Now, I love His followers as well and Jesus is my best friend.

This devotional was designed to be a companion to the film series of the same title. The series is free to watch as an app on any device. I think the book would make a great gift for those who have watched or are watching it so that they can dig a bit deeper into Scripture.

I found myself not quite liking the writing style of some of the readings as it reminds me of writings for teens.

The Moving Forward questions are thought-provoking and quite challenging!

great as a stand-alone-Devo & as complement to Show

I recommend that EVERYONE read this Devotional. 40 Days is a short stretch, so it's doable for anyone. It increased my desire to read more Scripture.
no matter where you are in this Journey called Life, this Devotional is for YOU. we are all CHOSEN.

Excellent devotional. Each day's reading is only 3-4 pages, which makes it perfect for everybody whose life is a little rushed.

(There was one grammatical error I noticed in the Leatherbound version. On page 123, the authors refer to David with the phrase, "the guy could be a piece a work." The correct idiom is "the guy could be a piece OF work.")

This Devotional speaks to me every day.

For instance, today I am on day 40. If you read it, you will understand. Today is Thanksgiving! Spot on Amanda, great job!
It teaches me something every day and also steps on my toes.
I look forward to learning about and loving Jesus more every day.

If you’ve never seen the series “The Chosen”, I highly recommend it. It is one of the best series on the life of Jesus to date. (Just my humble opinion). This devotional is based on the series, but it works as a stand alone without having seen the series. The reflections are short, but take you deep enough for prayerful meditation and reflection.

I really enjoyed this little devotional! It isn't like any other devotional I have read. I have to be honest and say that it isn't my favorite but it is unique to other devotionals I have read and I really liked my "40 Days With Jesus." This is a great addition to the fantastic show that inspired it!

Started this devotional to accompany my 40-day fast leading up to Easter. I like that this devotional has a focus on the people around Jesus and His heart for these people. Very relatable, it inspired me to be more introspective as I relate to the people who fall short, like all of us. A good book to start you on journaling your thoughts and feelings.

I'm not a devotional person but as a fan of The Chosen I decided to give this a try. Every time I pick up a devotional I don't finish it. This one I did! The writing is clear, direct, down to earth, and the perfect length for each day. This devotional few my faith and helped me focus on on my Savior, Jesus Christ.

A delightful "start your day" devotional that leads the reader to think carefully about the qualities of God and His Son, Jesus, as they created and redeemed the world. Also a neat insight into some of the minds that wrote the characterizations in the Chosen.

I started reading this daily after seeing the 1st series of The Chosen. It has taken me deeper into my faith and walk with the Lord. It has also strengthened me as well as convicted me in areas that needed to be convicted. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting to get closer to God.

I was hoping it was a bit more like the show as it says you’ll “see Jesus through the eyes of those He touched”. They’re good short daily devotions just not what I expected considering the connection to The Chosen

Enjoyed Reading the Simplicity

The journal is a journey to once again remind us of our calling. The continue distractions in our present life is a spiritual war against our calling and birthright. God tells us to “Be Still and know I am God.” Do it, do it now.

Finishing this devotional was the perfect way to start the new year! I usually like an in-depth Bible study more than a short daily devotional. But this one was from a unique perspective and has given me multiple thoughts to ponder.
