A Stoneybrook Mystery #1-3

A Stoneybrook Mystery Collection: A Cozy Mystery Box Set Books 1-3

Rate this book
The first three books in Eryn Scott’s popular Stoneybrook Mystery series. Follow jam maker, Hadley James, and her friends as they solve crimes in their usually peaceful town. Each book features a different cat and canning recipes from Food in Jars creator, Marisa McClellan.

A Crafty Crime

A Fresh Kill

A Sweet Death

A Crafty Crime

Even close-knit towns have secrets …

Hadley James is finally living the life she's always making jam and selling it at the local farmers market. When the local knitting store owner asks her to cat-sit, Hadley doesn’t give it a second thought. What could go wrong? A lot, apparently. Suddenly, her simple cat-sitting job has turned into a murder investigation and life no longer seems so perfect.

Her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, is on the case but they’ve always done everything together and she can’t help but get involved. Plus, it’s much easier for Hadley to infiltrate the local knitting club than it is for her brother.

Following a trail of crafty clues, the James twins learn that their sleepy town might be harboring more darkness than they could’ve imagined.

Recipes from Marisa McClellan, creator of Food in Jars, strawberry rhubarb jam and pickled asparagus!

A Fresh Kill

Competition stings ...

There's nothing like the Stoneybrook farmers market in summer. Fresh flowers, organic veggies, delicious jams ... and a dead body. When an outsider turns up murdered, all of the evidence points to his rival, Stoneybrook's beloved florist.

Unable to believe a pillar of their community could be guilty of such a heinous crime, Hadley dives head-first into the investigation. Sure, she's busy looking for a new house, running her business, and dealing with her ex--who's back in town--but Hadley is determined to find the truth before the wrong man goes to jail.

Recipes from Food in Jars creator, Marisa McClellan, peach lavender jam and honey-sweetened peach chutney!

A Sweet Death

Murder can’t be sugar-coated …

When a local teen goes missing, the town of Stoneybrook fears the worst.

Hadley is sure Miranda’s disappearance has nothing to do with the drug dealer who was found dead in Cascade Ridge. The charming, candy-shop cashier is entirely too sweet to get involved in any of that. But when the clues pile up, Hadley can’t help but draw parallels.

Suddenly autumn isn’t feeling like the cozy season Hadley loves, and the clock is ticking faster than the leaves are falling.

Every moment counts in a missing persons case, but whom do you suspect when the victim is beloved by all?

Or is she?

Recipes from Food in Jars creator, Marisa McClellan, apple rosemary jam and spiced pear chutney!

About the author

Eryn Scott

Eryn Scott is the author of heartwarming cozy mysteries. Her novels feature close friendships and strong families because those are the most important things in her life -- a little humor doesn't hurt either.

She calls the Pacific Northwest home and doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon. Eryn loves to hike, horseback ride, knit, ski, and read. She believes musicals are the greatest thing since lattes, even though she's not particularly good at singing or dancing -- hey, a girl can dream, right?

Her first cozy mystery series, Pepper Brooks, is based on some of the greats in classic literature. Each book features a different author from Shakespeare to Austen. Eryn's newest series is set in a little town called Stoneybrook. The Stoneybrook Mysteries follow local jam-maker Hadley James as she solves mysteries in her town's year-round farmers market. From deceased knitters to sabotaged florists, these crafty citizens keep Hadley and her twin brother, a deputy sheriff, on their toes. Pebble Cove Teahouse Mysteries are great for readers who love a hint of paranormal with their mysteries. These books feature a tiny town tucked between craggy coastline and rocky shores with quirky characters of both the living and non-living variety. Look for new releases from all three of these series in 2022 as well as Eryn Scott's new cozy series.

Thank you stuff your kindle day and Eryn Scott for this free trilogy. This was by far of my favorite set of book.

A crafty crime:
Was a good mystery solving, we have Ansel stealing all the spotlight since the first chapter. It was a good way to start. Then we learn all behind Edith’s life.
After a couple days Hadly starts to notice all the small details.
Even with some foreshadowing, and very obvious clues, the murderer is not who I thought was going to be. Not the typical plot twist and certainly not what I was expecting.
Ansel was 10/10 the true detective.

A fresh kill:
Not what I was expecting after the first book. I really enjoyed visiting Stoneybrook again with Hadley, Suze and Paul. Definitely not my favorite, a little bit repertitive but a smooth plot overall.
I was very entertaining, lots of twists, turns and surprises.

A sweet death:
I loved this book from start to finish. Definitely this was my favorite out of the three. It’s a cozy mystery like the first two and one that I found thoroughly entertaining. In fact I read this one in almost one go as I kept saying, just one more chapter until I fell asleep.
All of Miranda’s secrets,Brenda’s surprises and definitely another main character Bailey. To be honest Eryn Scott writes really great characters and build an entire town you feel you know by the end of the book. The mystery for this one had me guessing and wanting more and more and totally delivered.

My favorite quote from Hadly is when she is called a crazy cat lady, when she indeed has two cats. That was so relatable and her explanation in her mind was so accurate. How they mention again Ansel, was also genious.

Overall you'll love these books if you enjoy character driven mysteries, that are light hearted and family oriented.

The three mysteries were mediocre and perhaps could have been better except for the cast of characters.
First and foremost, I could not abide Hadley at all. What a pain. She can come up with more scenarios for unsuspecting people who she considers persons of interest than you can shake a stick at.
At 30/31 she is extremely immature. We all had stupid habits as kids, which we grew out of, but apparently Hadley never reached that level of maturity. If I read one more sentence about her picking the polish off her fingernails (which seemed to occur every couple of pages or so), I might just possibly have thrown the book up against the wall. People must just love her leaving shards of nail polish on their floors, rugs, cars, etc. If she is that nervous, perhaps she is on her way to a nervous breakdown and should see a shrink and possibly get some medication to calm her down.
And then, there is her divorce, the cause of which she will not reveal, taking the full brunt for its dissolution, even though her husband cheated on her and spent all of their money on his paramour.
So half of the town hates her, but that's all right, because she doesn't want to hurt his image or disappoint his family. Plus, she is extremely "make me barf" goody two-shoes to everyone and in everything she does. Did I mention that I hear they are canonizing her next week.
And then there is Paul, the Deputy who uses Had and Suze to interrogate people in a roundabout way. Good way to keep your job in law enforcement. Unauthorized deputies, way to go.
And last, but not least, a relationship between Luke and Had was danced around through 3 books without ever coming up with the slightest hookup between them, although it was more than obvious that that was in the offing. Of course, at the way it is progressing, it may takes another 3 books before they make any connection. Plus, seeing as how they each, individually, purchased their own homes, it may take more than 3 books for anything to evolve. Think they'll make it before they turn 40?
All in all, I think I will pass on this series.

A fantastic cozy mystery series with wonderful characters!

I do not enjoy reviews that include spoilers. I can only assure you that if you love reading classics cozies, this series will not disappoint. The following reviews were left individually with each book read.

BOOK 1- A Crafty Crime
A great story to start off a new cozy mystery series!
I love reading cozy mysteries especially when the author tells the story so well that you feel like one of the townies. That is exactly how I feel about this story. If the rest of this series is as good as this first book, I know that I have found a new favorite author!
If you enjoy new recipes to add to your collection, the following recipes are included in this book:
1) Strawberry Rhubarb Jam
2) Pickled Asparagus
Both recipes created by Marisa McClellan, creator of Food in Jars.

BOOK 2- A Fresh Kill
A great cozy mystery!
I love reading cozy mysteries especially when the author tells the story so well that you feel like one of the townies. That is exactly how I feel about this story. This story is just as entertaining as the first book of the series. I have found a new favorite author!
If you enjoy new recipes to add to your collection, the following recipes are included in this book:
1) Honey-Sweetened Peach Chutney
2) Peach Lavender Jam
Both recipes created by Marisa McClellan, creator of Food in Jars.

BOOK 3- A Sweet Death
Another great cozy mystery!
I love reading cozy mysteries especially when the author tells the story so well that you feel like one of the townies. That is exactly how I feel about this story. This story is the third book of the series and just as entertaining as the first two books. I am so looking forward to reading the next story.
If you enjoy new recipes to add to your collection, the following recipes are included in this book:
1) Apple Rosemary Jam
2) Spiced Pear Chutney
Both recipes created by Marisa McClellan, creator of Food in Jars.

Good

This features the first three books in this enjoyable cosy mystery series.

Book one introduces Hadley James and her twin brother Paul. Hadley makes small batch jams, Paul is a deputy in their small town sheriff’s department.
When Hadley discovers the town grouch dead, she decides to help her brother figure out the murderer.

Book two is a case of a murdered florist, and Hadley is certain that neither of the main suspects are guilty. Knowing that she can sometimes get people to talk when her brother can’t, she’s determined to help him!
Meanwhile her ex is back in town, and Hadley is house hunting!

Book three has Hadley helping her brother find a missing teen. The plot thickens though, even as time wears on, and Hadley struggles to get the town talking.
She’s without her usual sidekicks this time though, as both Suze and Paul seem to be keeping secrets from her!

Each book features a special cat character, and a slow burn romance between Hadley and an old friend (so slow burn that it has only progressed to Hadley actually noticing him by the end of book three!).
They’re typical small town mysteries, with quirky characters, a town that belongs in a drug commercial, and a few rather delicious looking recipes.

An enjoyable series for those who enjoy their mysteries cosy and quaint!

I had already read the books in this collection, but it had been awhile. I wanted to get back into the series, so I decided to reread. It had been long enough for the first 2 books that I didn't remember a lot of detail, just a sense of dejavu. The third book was more familiar. I previously rated all books 1 & 2 as 4 stars and book 2 as three stars. I agree with my assessment. My main problem with book 3 is that the main character was so oblivious about why her friend was being secretive and missed clues that flashed out like a neon sign that should have led her to solve the mystery sooner. I'm glad to get back into this series and look forward to book 5, which will be totally new to me!

A new favorite author

I had received the Stoneybrook series for free through one of the digital sites I subscribe to. I had never heard of this author, but the storyline was of interest. I absolutely love this series and plan to read more by this author. My all time favorite author is Maeve Binchy. I love her stories because they are set in small towns and as a reader, they made me feel like I really got to know the town and it’s people. Eryn Scott’s writing reminds me so much of Maeve Binchy and I love it. Looking forward to continuing on with this series.

I always enjoy cozy mysteries by Eryn Scott, but what I enjoy most about the Stoneybrook series is that each book can stand alone even though they're part of a series. Scott weaves in the necessary back story better than most authors, so that the reader is kept in-the-know regardless of which book is picked up first. However, the most enjoyment, in my opinion, is to start with book 1. That way the thrill of overcome challenges, growing relationships, and personal growth are shared all the way through.

An excellent trio of books that I highly recommend if you're looking for clean cozy mysteries.
These are easy reading cozies that leave you guessing (no obvious culprits here) until the last 10% of the book. Best of all, the main characters are a brother, a sister, and her best friend--that means a focus on the mystery, friendship, and familial relationships rather than romance. This is a real winner! I look forward to reading more from this author.

A Stoneybrook Mystery Collection by Eryn Scott is comprised of A Crafty Crime, A Fresh Kill, and A Sweet Death. Each story features Hadley and her twin brother, and a few endearing felines. Jennifer Jill Araya was wonderful bringing the books to life. She gives the characters distinguishable voices, and adds the right emotions. I really enjoyed how each book was original, and the crime solved. This is a great collection and fun listen.

I liked it, the main character's issues seemed to make her more authentic and real and it didn't bother me that she flaked her nail polish off continuously. It is better than biting her nails, after all. The plot was fun, but there was a serious lack of communication, especially between her and her twin brother. Talk, people! Talk!

I Loved these stories! The characters are un-forgetable! This was a hard book to put down, I even took it to work to read on my lunch hour! I was hooked in the first few pages, the author knows how to describe a place that you feel like you are there (or want to visit). This is a series of mysteries that will keep you guessing till the end!

I love the setting and the characters, for the most part. Good mysteries. Some surprises. Quick, fun, easy reads. The main character has an annoying disgusting habit of picking off her nail polish and dropping it wherever she is (even in peoples' homes). Totally unnecessary to read about. She tends to put herself in dangerous situations as well.

Fun read in a small town

Hadley makes jam in a small town. Her twin brother is a sheriffs deputy in the same town. These three stories tell of Had’s misadventures that help her brother solve crimes. It’s a solid read. I liked the characters. Would actually say 3.5 to 3.75 rating.

As advertised

Yes, a cozy mystery. A set of books for the romantic at heart. Also with Suttle hints of conservation. These stories won't tax your brain. Enjoy the read with no guilt. Their are no adult situations or bad language to deal with.

I was worried we wouldn’t get to the part where we find out about the relationship. Good job. I guessed the surprise but it was better than I guessed and left me with a big smile. Thanks for this.
