This is Top Hat's story, the next war dog to be found. He's in canada somewhere and Lucas is going to find him. His sister lives there so he can kill two birds with one stone. His old love happens to live there as well. It was a bad break up because he wanted children and she didn't. But her bad luck with her losing job and her two girlfriends getting hurt, one killed and the other a hit and run. Plenty of action and a HEA. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Lucas heads to Canada to visit his sister and to search for Top Hat, a missing military K9. When he encounters some dog fighting groups, he worries that his missing dog has been forced to participate. His ex-girlfriend travels with him to help search and when they both get into trouble, it is up to Lucas to get them out of it. So much action, anger, frustration, sorrow and a second chance romance, help to make this a book that you won’t be able to put down.
I thought that this was an entertaining read. A storyline that will evoke strong emotions in the reader and likable main characters combine to make a very enjoyable read. Add in some action, excitement, danger, drama, tension and emotional turmoil and this is a book that will capture and hold your interest easily. I am posting a voluntary, honest review.
I love these books that focus on dog rescue missions. These stories are emotional rollercoasters. The dog fighting aspect of this story was so well written I felt anger, sadness, frustration and more. The characters are complex and endearing, Lucas is one of my favorites so far. This book is action packed with just the right amount of romance. I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
3.5 Stars - Top Hat, Lucas & Tanya's story had a little bit of everything. It was enjoyable to read. I did not rate it higher because I felt it fell off towards the end. After investing the time to read their story, I felt as a reader I needed more completion. Also, even though they were together intimately and he had a prosthetic foot, which she knew about...It was never addressed in those intimate moments of her complete understanding and acceptance. Also, I wish it would have ended with more time under their belts to address the twins and her mother more completely. And also Too Hat.
I love this series, and Lucas is one of its best books so far. The cast of characters is very well designed, featuring two fascinating protagonists, their irresistible canine protegè and a well-assorted collection of good and evil characters. Such a varied population keeps the narration lively and entertaining at all times. Cameo appearances of the members of the Titanium Corporation are the joy of Ms. Mayer's faithful readers. Lucas is a self-confident, generous, and positive individual. He is a matter of fact person; he is saddened but not depressed by the unfortunate circumstances of the last year of his life. Having accepted his situation, he is working at building a new life and career for himself. Finally, he has a kind and caring disposition; his interactions with Top Hat the dog and his patient and unimposing advice for Tanya give life to beautiful and captivating pages. In the beginning, Tanya is a perplexing character, her motivations and reasoning appearing a little shallow and inconclusive. As the story evolves, however, she reveals herself as a sassy, intelligent, and very determined woman. Lucas is discreetly at her side helping and supporting her rediscovery of her true self. Their canine ward, Top Hat, is a true co-protagonist of the story. Initially described as an aggressive and battered dog, he proves to be wise and affectionate, and even funny, when not mistreated. Another distinctive feature of the book is the rich plot. The story is fast-paced, full of action, and has numerous twists. There are a few very emotional moments, adding to the kaleidoscope of circumstances depicted in the novel. Overall, Lucas is an entertaining, heartwarming, and captivating book that surprises the reader by telling a fresh story, which is interesting and engaging at all times. A captivating episode that delivers on the author's promises and raises high expectations for the upcoming ones. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. Opinions and comments are solely my own
Lucas is dispatched to Canada to track down Top Hat a military dog who got sent to Canada by mistake. Lucas' sister and her family leave in Canada as does his ex-fiancee. He has never forgotten her and since being injured in combat he has been home twice but avoided her. They broke up because he wanted something that she didn't.
Tanya's life has gone sideways since she and Lucas split up. She lived with two of her close friends and one was murdered and the other is in a coma in the hospital. She lost her job and she is barely making ends meet. She spends her down time at her friend's bedside and at her other friend's gravesite.
She and Lucas are thrust into the world of dogfighting and it's ugliness. They must work together to save Top Hat and figure out the issues that separated them because the connection is still as strong as ever.
I really liked this story. The subject matter is rough as dog fighting is an ugly sport. Lucas is strong and he is a fighter. He has bounced back from injuries that sidelined him for many months. He know works for Badger's company but he isn't necessarily married to his job. He wants more. He is very protective of his family and of Tanya.
Tanya has had very little childhood and she is skittish when it comes to having a family. She gets bad news about her mom and the fact that her twin half siblings may be in need of a permanent home soon. She is an animal lover and a hard worker who got a bum wrap. Tanya is stronger than she realizes but she does have baggage that needs to be worked on. She is willing to try to get past her childhood issues in order to move on with her life. I admire that about this character.
Ms. Mayer's characters are flawed and have baggage that are quite realistic. The dog is this story has been through so much and has a strong will to live. I like that too. She combines a second chance love story with mystery, suspense and dogs. I loved it and can't wait for the next story.
If you've read the SEALs of Steel series you'll recognize the guys doing the match ups for the K9s. Geir, Badger and Jager discuss who they're going to ask to find TopHat in the prologue, and actually compare themselves to Levi and Mason from the Heroes from Hire and SEALs of Honor Series respectively and their matchmaking skills. That had me giggling.
Lucas Scott is the one they bring in and he agrees right away. He decides that at the very least he'd have a good visit with his sister and maybe even get some sort of closure on his relationship with his ex Tanya.
Now Tanya has gone through a lot recently, she lost her job over something that she didn't do and was exonerated. One of her best friends was kidnapped and murdered and Alice the other part of the 'Three Muscateers' was in an accident resulting in her being in a coma. She's been thinking about Jake and how they broke up and when she hears from his sister Meg he's coming home for a visit and to find a dog, she wants to see him.
She wasn't sure he'd even talk to her, but when he does, she volunteers to go with him to the shelter that has Top Hat. A rather long round trip, with some interesting conversation.
Of course it couldn't be as simple as getting to the shelter and picking up the dog, apparently they moved him to a trainer who could handle him better without notifying Lucas. Where he had escaped from his cage. What happens next puts Tanya and Lucas in the middle of the horrible sport of dog fighting and trying to stop the rings.
Hold your breath scenes as things come together and they find Top Hat. A rekindling of romance, a loving protective dog, family and mysteries solved.
I love this series, the avenues to find these 'misplaced' Military Dogs have been exciting, dangerous, romantic and suspenseful. I can't wait to read the next book!
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Booksprout, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the fifth book in Dale Mayer’s K9 File series. Even though this is an ongoing series, each book is written as a stand-alone book with new characters and an action-packed plot that is solved by the last chapter.
Top Hat is a retired military dog who was accidentally sent to Canada with a group of rescued dogs. Since Lucas is a former SEAL from Canada, the Navy leaders think he would be the perfect person to search for Top Hat. Lucas’s sister lives in the area with her family. So does Tanya, Lucas’s ex-girlfriend and true love.
This is an absorbing suspense which highlights the abuse caused by the disgusting sport of dog fighting. Somehow, Top Hat gets involved with dog fighters who think that, as a military dog, he would make a perfect fighting animal. Unfortunately, Lucas finds himself in great danger as he hunts for Top Hat.
Meanwhile, Tanya has had major problems since she broke up with Lucas. She was fired from her accounting job, and her two best friends have been involved in some terrible events. One of them died when she was strangled, and the other one is in a coma after an automobile accident.
Dale Mayer, an expert suspense writer, has again come up with a twisted, complex mystery that revolves around Lucas, Top Hat and Tanya. Ms. Mayer skillfully intertwines the Top Hat and Lucas’s predicament with the mystery of Tanya and her friends.
This book is a page-turner with lots of twists, turns and dangerous obstacles for Lucas, Top Hat and Tanya. You will not be able to put it down until the last page. .
What a story! Volunteering to check on missing war dog, Top Hat, gave Lucas a welcome opportunity to visit his sister Meg, who had married the son of a farmer in Medicine Hat, not too far from Saskatchewan, Canada. Top Hat was at risk because he had been wounded in action and then attacked by a pack of wolves while waiting for help. Deemed by his adopter to have an unsafe temperament, he was turned over to a local rescue. Lucas, who himself suffered from back injuries and had lost a few ribs in an accident, could tell from the photo that Top Hat was intelligent and not so much out of control as suffering from PTSD.
Planning to leave for the Fur & Feathers rescue the morning after his arrival at Meg’s, Lucas didn’t count on hearing from his ex-fiancée, Tanya. The two had split up over his desire to have a family and hers not to after having spent her teen years raising six siblings. Tanya’s life had taken several bad turns recently as she had lost her career position over an error that wasn’t hers, and her two best friends had been taken from her, one dead and the other left in a coma after being hit by a car. When Lucas accepts Tanya’s offer to drive with him to pick up Top Hat, they embark on a journey that left me as the reader alternately hopeful and hopeless over the events and deceptions and threats they encounter. Wow, what an emotional trip! As a lifelong lover of rescued dogs, I absolutely love this series.

I was kindly provided this book as an ARC; in exchange for my honest review. This is book 5 of 6 (so far) in The K9 Files series. This book centers around Lucas and Tanya; and TopHat The K9.
Tophat is one of the missing war dogs that Lucas has been assigned to locate. Tophat was erroneously/accidentally sent to Canada with a group of rescue dogs looking for adoption.
Upon arrival at the rescue organization Lucas discovers that Tophat was deemed “aggressive” and given to a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs.
Upon learning of this additional mishap Lucas is suspicious of the situation; and even more so after arriving at the trainer’s property and discovering Tophat had “escaped.”
Lucas and his ex-fiancé Tanya are suddenly in the middle of a horrible dogfighting ring.
This is NOT a romance, but follows a suspense/mystery format. There is zero profanity and sexy-times. Heat level zero. Violence and action level a 4.5 out of 10 (ten being the worst.) and violence is not graphic. This is a fairly decent series that is loosely linked to Ms. Dale’s SEALs Of Steel series.
Tophat is also not aggressive as claimed (*spoiler), but he’s still a pretty bad-a$$ doggie.
Not a “page-burner”, But is a well written, fast and easy-read; which can truthfully (in my opinion) be read by teens (14+) and adults.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A retiring K9 Tophat was accidentally sent to Canada in a batch of rescue dogs and Lucas agrees to look for him during a visit to his sister (who leaves near to his ex-fiancee too). However, he finds that he was handed over to a trainer who deals with aggressive dogs and when he arrives at the property he finds himself in the brutal world of dogfighting. Tanya used to share her flat with her two best friends but one has been killed in a hit-and-run and one is badly injured and in a coma. As part of re-evaluating her life, she realised how much she had missed - including Lucas. So seeing him there again has completely flipped her world. As Lucas tries to find Tophat the dogfighting world starts to protect their own.
This was both a heartbreaking story with all the danger and abuse that the dogs were going through but heartwarming as well as Lucas fought to do the best he could for them ensuring they had medical attention and freedom. It was also sweet to see how Lucas and Tanya worked to resolve their differences talking through everything that had happened and trying to keep each other alive in the face of such sustained attacks from the dogfighting world. Well written and very enjoyable it was a charming story with a HEA at the end. You did not have to read the previous books in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I loved this story. Lucas is sent to Canada in search of Top Hat, one of the missing 12 War Dogs. His sister and her family live in Canada as well as his ex-girlfriend, Tanya. Lucas and Tanya still love each other but he wants a family and she doesn't. She helped to raise her siblings and that was enough for her. As these two search for Top Hat, they work through their difficulties. The road through to their HEA though is filled with mystery and intrigue. Was Top Hat taken from the shelter for a life of dog-fighting, who can they trust, is what happened to her two girlfriends connected with the dog-fighting? There are so many questions that arise and have to be answered.
I loved the dual POV format. Getting a glimpse into the characters' thought process, especially Tanya's was very enlightening. It really helped to understand her and her choices so much better. I also loved the plot. The story just flew by and was one that kept me glued to my e-reader.
While you don't have to read any of the prior books to enjoy this one, I would recommend it just because they are really great stories. I highly recommend.
I am a fan of our deployed and a huge advocate for Dog rescue. All 3 of my dogs are rescues. That being said I was so on board with this K9 War Dog series. It makes one think even though the author does her best to make it a story of fiction and not assign blame anywhere. Dog fighting is atrocious. This was handled gently. Facts were provided of the nature of dog fights and possible end results, but its more about man kind being the evil perpetrator. Lucas goes to Canada where his sister and his ex girlfriend lives to locate TopHat a warrior K9. TopHat goes from one rescue group, to another, to a third that handles aggressive dogs. Dog fighting is a huge business in this area and shady dealings come to light. Unfortunately along with some shady cops, which sadly makes sense. He ends up connecting with his ex girlfriend Tanya, who is still good friends with his sister Meg, and they go on this endeavor together. There is murder and a hit run that take place before hand which land Tanya in a precarious position. The back story provided for Tanya explains a lot and Lucas patience and understanding is enviable. A serious subject handled as a gentle reminder to the viciousness of man. Thank you for the arc. All thoughts and opinions are my own and were unsolicited.
Another lovely story in the K9 series. Dale Mayer has cleverly incorporated old friends from the SEAL of Honour and Heroes for Hire series into this exciting book. Lucas is an ex SEAL who was discharged due to life altering injuries. Because of his connection with Canada (his sister and his ex fiance live there) he is the obvious choice to track down Tophat, an ex military dog who has been dispatched to Canada by mistake. Tanya, his ex fiance joins him on the journey in the hope that they will be able to sort out issues and at least become friends. The gentle romance runs through the book along with dog fighting, murder, bent policemen etc, etc, there is intrigue, twists and turns, red herrings making this a really enjoyable story. I love the way that these ex military dogs are afforded the same respect and care as their human colleagues. This is a standalone book as are the previous books in this series but it gently eases the reader into the next one in the series. I can highly recommend this book if you want a delightful story with some substance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Dale Mayer has a way of reminding us of ongoing issues by telling a story about people who are brave enough to fight these problems. OK, so the Navy Seals are amazing, the K9 dogs are special as well and the combo defending each other is something to see. Lucas (Navy Seal) has volunteered to go to Canada to search for Tophat a missing retired K9. Lucas has additional reasons for returning to Canada as his sister and her family live there as does his ex-fiance, Tanya. Lucas and Tanya parted ways as their ideas about raising a family didn't match well. Now Tanya has lost two roommates, one killed in a hit and run and the other in a coma after being badly injured in a separate incident. Tanya at the same time had issues at work forcing her out. All this has made her wonder about life choices and why these things have all happened so closely together. Meanwhile Tophat has been given to a trainer with questionable ulterior motives possibly bringing in the scary world of dog fighting. Tophat escapes his prison and Lucas arrives to put all the pieces together and protect the ones he loves while accomplishing this. Once again, well done Dale Mayer!
I just love these K-9 stories! They tend to pull the heart strings a little more than the other stories and they can get quite emotional at times too!
I love how fiercely Lucas searches for TopHat and his determination to stop the entire dog fighting practice all around the area including the small community where they find the War Dog. Dog fighting is an ugly pastime that I can’t even begin to understand the sense of. How can anyone find any kind of thrill or enjoyment hurting a dog let alone watch one dog tear apart another, all for money.
I found myself getting agitated while reading about the many dogs being held. I was silently urging Lucas to hurry and find these poor, helpless souls. I also felt empathy for Tanya’s grudge against her mother for her lost childhood. The one thing she gained was the knowledge brought by being forced to learn how to care for a home and young children.
This story is jam-packed with emotion and satisfaction of doing the right thing for the numerous, helpless animals. I enjoyed the bully being taken down and the successful outcome of this adventure!
I impatiently wait for the books in this series as I love the story lines and I love that the books center around war dogs who have been released from military duty for one reason or another. In this book, Top Hat is the dog and I fell in love with him as I have with every dog in this series. I loved the interaction between Tanya and Lucas and how they put aside everything to search for Top Hat. I did not like reading about the dog fighting rings but know that they do exist and this story opened my eyes to how it happens and how the dogs are treated. I hated that the dogs are abused but again, I know this is happening in our everyday lives yet most people are not aware of how often it does happen. Dale really hit the nail on the head with this story and made me more aware of this situation. I loved reading this book and could not put it down as it pulled me in from the start and I sure did not want to put the book down to deal with everyday life. If you love dogs, and action and suspense you will love this book. Waiting impatiently for the next book in the series!..

Admittedly, I’m a sucker for a second chance romance, but add in a K9 war dog and I'm halfway in love before I read the first page. This series so far has been terrific. I love the wounded warriors who go off to search for a war dog and fall in love, both with their special lady and the dog. There's just something so satisfying about a man and a dog who both sacrificed for their country getting a second chance and finding a home for their heart.
Lucas gets a second chance with the girl he lost but still loves as he searches for the K9, Top Hat, and breaks up a dogfighting ring. This is a quick, easy read, but don’t let that fool you. There's plenty of chemistry between Lucas and Tanya, and the danger, intrigue and fast-paced action kept me on the edge of my seat. Add in touches of humor and a ton of heart, and you can’t go wrong with this exciting, heartfelt, fantastic read.
*I read an early edition of this book freely and voluntarily, having made no commitment to provide feedback and receiving no compensation of any kind from any source.
Lucas and Tanya were engaged to be married. But she broke off their engagement a year ago. He's now returned to Canada where his sister, her family and Tanya live. He's in pursuit of a missing US War Dog. He's volunteering under the auspices of the Titanium Group, who he works for part-time. Lucas is still recovering from injuries sustained during his military service, but that won't slow him down. He fears the dog, Top Hat, has been swept up in a wide spread dog fighting scheme. Tanya has realized the mistake she made breaking up with Lucas. She plans on winning him back. She soon realizes she must help him find Top Hat. When a series of life changing coincidences start to not be coincidences Lucas and Tanya join together to not only find their dog, but to put an end to the dog fights. That's when things get real and serious fast. Both our heroes need to protect each other and work together. Will it be enough? Can they overcome their past hesitancy? Well written and action packed this is a very good read.
Lucas by Dale Mayer The K9 Files Series Book Five Lucas Scott has been injured and is now out of the navy. When he gets a call from Titanium Corp about checking on a missing War Dog named Top Hat, he jumps on the mission. After all, it's in Canada so he can visit his sister and her family, and maybe he can tie up the loose ends with his ex-fiancée so he can move on.
Tanya Nolan's life has gone down the crapper since she broke up with Lucas. One of her roommates was murdered; the other is in a coma after a hit and run. She was alone...lonely. When her friend Meg, Lucas's sister, mentions Lucas is there, Tanya decides it's time to face him and get the past settled.
When Lucas agrees to take Tanya on a road trip to get Top Hat, they have no idea of what they are in for. Their search leads them onto a dark trail and danger that neither ever expected. I really enjoy these K9 stories. **Sexual Content and language https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Top Hat has been mistakenly sent to Canada with a group of rescue dogs so Lucas has no choice but to go to Canada to get him and bring him back to the US. Top Hat is a war dog and deserves peace and the comfort of someone who cares about him. Lucas's sister lives about a 4 hour drive from the last location Top Hat was being kept but so did his ex finance and she was friends with his sister. I love books that involve Alpha Males, strong women and dogs! This book fills every need for a book that involves all three of these.Lucas and Tanya still have a very strong connection and you catch yourself hoping they patch things up, they both deserve it.
There is excitement, danger, kidnapping, drama, dysfunctional family dynamics, emotional reconnections and taking down of the bad guys. When Lucas and Tanya finally take possession of Top Hat it's only the beginning. This book will definitely keep your attention from the first chapter.
When Geir,Badger and Jager discuss a new dog missing a military dog lost in Canada they decide to as Lucas since he has family there and maybe he can find closure with his ex fiance.Things go bad and Lucas not only must protect Top Hat after he was found shot but he must protect his ex.Will they find they still love each other? There are so many twists and turns to this story will keep you riveted until the very last page. The characters in this story are unique each in their own way.The chemistry between Lucas and Tanya is off the charts and you will find yourself wanting them together.I love the way this amazing author brings the characters to life before your eyes and you can feel their emotions and their pain.I can hardly wait to see what;s next by this multi talented author.

Since Lucas, a medically discharged former SEAL, has family in Canada where a war dog was accidentally shipped, he has agreed to find the dog. When Tanya, his ex-fiancé hears that he is in Canada and looking for the dog, she asks if she can accompany him. They soon realize that the dog is probably ensnared in a large dog fighting ring. As they try to keep the dog safe, Lucas and Tanya draw closer together. I received a free copy of this book from the author through Booksprout. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a very suspenseful book, especially because it was hard for them to find people to trust. Dog fighting is a very brutal illegal sport and I didn't realize the extent of it in some communities. Adding to the story is Tanya and Lucas's relationship and how they resolved their past issues. This book is an excellent addition to the story.
Another ex SEAL finds the one and this time it’s a past fiancée and all about second chances. Lucas and Tanya broke up because of differences but they still love each other very much and still both hold out hope that they will be together again. When Lucas is sent to Canada to look for Tophat, a K9 who was mixed up with other dogs, he encounters Tanya and the two set out on a road trip and finally have a chance to get closure...or do they. A great read with some steam, some action and suspense and second chances. These two were it for each other and I liked the way they work through their problems and are open and honest. I also liked that neither were with anyone else and never fell out of love. Their journey has some twists and turns and I liked the action on the farm...can’t wait for the next one. *I voluntarily read an advanced copy and expressed my honest opinion*
I always think that the K9 Files series’ books are a bit different, in a good way. Lucas book was no exception. As with other books in the series, there’s canine protagonist that need to be rescued and actually be a rescuer in its own way.
Without spoiling anything, the thing that I found quite unusual in the book was the romance. I think all of Dale Mayer’s books are romance-suspense in genre to varying degree of romance. I felt that this book was very low on romance though. Didn’t mean it’s not great, it still was, but just a bit unusual. I also couldn’t quite connect with the heroine, Tanya. Not my favourite character at the start of the book, and still wasn’t at the end. It still an enjoyable fast read though.
I was provided a complimentary copy by the author / publisher, but this in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions.
WOW! Another exciting story. It was a sad yet intriguing story about a War Dog gone missing. This story is about Top Hat who somehow ends in the dogfighting business. Lucas is sent to his sister's hometown as that seems to be where Top Hat was last seen. Meanwhile, Lucas has to face his ex-fiance, Tanya. Tanya's life had taken a turn for the worse when Lucas left, she lost her best friends, one to murder and one to a coma. Lucas' return seemed to bring to the surface that Tanya was in danger as well as her feelings for Lucas. Lucas finds Top Hat and helps break up a high dogfighting ring and saving both Top Hat and Tanya. Tanya definitely doesn't want to lose Lucas again so she comes to terms with her idea of not having a family. The three become a family and these two start to work on their happily ever after! FANTASTIC job Dale! I would recommend this book.
Another instalment if the wonderful K9 series. This time it’s Lucas. On his way to Canada to visit his sister and find the military dog Top Hat. His ex lives there but she is dealing with their own tragedy with one friend dead and the other in a coma. As she joins Lucas in his hunt it’s clear that all is not what it seems as police, businessmen and a dog rescue centre get involved in a dogfighting ring. Will Lucas be able to keep Tanya safe and find Top Hat whilst dealing with shooters and bad guys? As usual I loved this book. It seems that badger and co have an infinity to matchmaking as much as Mason and co. Loved all the characters and I will admit to shouting at the book when things went awry. I can’t wait for Parker’s book.
