There is a reason why I love thrillers. I think this is one genre that has yet to see a dry spell when it comes to content and authors. Even after reading so many over the years, there is still room for finding more good ones and Hide and Seek is one such example. This is my first Mary Burton book and with it I have found another author that I want to read more from.

Hide and Seek by Mary Burton is the first book of the new romantic suspense Criminal Profiler series. While this is listed as the first book of a new series it isn’t the first look at the characters. Macy’s accident that she had just recovered from actually happened in Cut and Run by Mary Burton with her having ties to those characters and a part in that story which gets mentions in this book so one may want to pick that up first although it’s not totally necessary.

Her first assignment is the case of Tobi Turner, a high school girl whose bones were recently found after fifteen years. Working with Macy is local sheriff Mike Nevada, a former agent and someone Macy has a personal Hide and Seek was another phenomenal romantic suspense from author Mary Burton and a fantastic start to a new series.

Macy is the sister of Faith McIntyre, the main character in the author’s recent book Cut and Run. It was during the events of Cut and Run that Macy was involved in the hit and run that almost killed her that she’s still suffering the effects from in this book. Macy despises the limitations she now has due to her injury and as a result she pushes herself harder than she should so soon after being hurt. I understood Macy’s frustrations as she was a woman used to doing and doesn’t like being sidelined.

Macy worked with Mike in the past and the two had a no strings relationship at one point. When the pair meet again, it’s clear there’s still something between them and I enjoyed watching them dance around their obvious attraction. The pair work well together and they understand each other both professionally and personally. When their relationship does progress, I enjoyed the direction things went and felt it fit their relationship perfectly. Plus the sex scenes between the duo are fantastically done with the perfect amount of steaminess.

The investigation in this book was incredibly interesting and I was curious who would end up being the killer. The killer in this book is extremely depraved, having moved from stalking to rape to murder. The more Macy and Mike looked into Tobi’s death and the string of rapes, the more the pair uncovered. At times it felt like they were finding one thing after another which did lead to the book being quite fast paced. I liked that there weren’t any dull moments and felt the author did a great job keeping you hooked. The ending of the book was very well done in my opinion and I thought the final showdown with the killer in particular was fantastic.

Overall I really enjoyed Hide and Seek and I really liked the connection to her previous book Cut and Run. I definitely recommend these books if you prefer your romantic suspense to focus more on the suspense aspects.

Mary Burton has been on my to read list for years. Hide and Seek was a great introduction to her. The start of a new series, this book centers on Macy, an FBI agent coming off of a life-threatening injury, and a case of a serial rapist/murderer in a small town. Sheriff Nevada heads up the investigation and Mary is brought in to assist. She and Nevada have a history and I am glad that while it was explored, it took the back burner to the crimes and mystery at hand.

HIDE AND SEEK (Criminal Profiler #1) by Mary Burton is a romantic suspense with a stronger emphasis on the suspense/thriller plot line than the romance. The two main characters have been involved in the past, both professionally and romantically, which allows the author to amp up the suspense without the reader feeling cheated on the romance. This is a new series, but there is overlapping of characters from Ms. Burton’s previous books.

FBI Special Agent Macy Crow has an innate ability to connect seemingly unconnected pieces of a crime together to solve big cases. She is attempting to get on the FBI’s elite profiling team so she can get back out into the field. After being almost killed by a hit-and-run tied to her last case in Texas, she knows she is not yet one-hundred percent, but she is tired of sitting behind a desk.

Mike Nevada has returned home after resigning from the FBI. He was a profiler and had had enough of the death and depravity. He is elected sheriff after discovering multiple rape kits that the current sheriff purposely never had processed. When the bones and backpack of a fifteen-year-old missing person case of a high school girl are discovered, Mike requests Macy’s assistance on the case.

Macy and Nevada work together as seamlessly as before, but they are up against a killer who has evolved and honed his skills over many years. In 2004, he started with rapes and then worked his way up to kidnapping and murder. He is bold enough to have left his DNA at every scene and he is still free. He is watching as Macy starts to put the pieces together and he has decided she needs to be stopped - permanently.

I read this book in one sitting. The investigation was so intriguing and the killer so depraved that I just had to find out who the killer was. The climax had me on the edge of my seat. Macy and Nevada are a great couple who each understand what drives the other. Macy is extremely strong and resilient and yet vulnerable due to her physical changes since the accident. Nevada is strong, smart and the perfect man to support Macy. The sex scenes are not too explicit or long. All of the secondary characters are fully fleshed out and I will be looking forward to following them in future books, too.

I can highly recommend this book and I will be waiting anxiously for the next book in this series!

She is very good at creating a crime, mystery that holds the attention and keeps the reader guessing until the end. Be aware that the crimes in this book are rape and that may bother some people. When Hide and Seek opens, Macy has been working a desk job since being cleared to return to work some months after being discharged from hospital, and is keen to get back to work in the field. She’s applied to join the small but legendary team that tackles violent crime and is given a case file to review as part of her interview, that of a teenaged girl named Tobi Turner who went missing around fifteen years earlier. The previous week, the girl’s skeletal remains were found during a renovation project on an old barn in Deep Run in the Shenandoah Valley, and the local sheriff – a former FBI agent named Mike Nevada (with whom Macy had a brief fling before the accident) – requested the bureau’s assistance after DNA evidence suggested a link between Tobi’s death and the activities of an unknown serial rapist who’d been active around the same time.

The team leader isn’t offering any guarantees, but gives Macy an assignment – five days in Deep Run to find out everything she can about the case followed by a debrief in Quantico the following week – after which he’ll make a final decision about her application. It’s what Macy had hoped for – she’s good at her job and she’s ready to get back in the game; now she just needs to prove it.

Mike Nevada hadn’t intended to run for sheriff in his old home town, but after receiving an anonymous tip off about the fact that the incumbent had failed to submit a number of rape kits for testing, and a meeting with the man that left Nevada furious and frustrated, he’d immediately declared his intention to run for the post – and surprising even himself, had won. One of the first things he did after taking over as sheriff was to have those rape kits tested – and of the eight kits, three of them contain DNA that is a match to that found on the backpack belonging to Tobi Turner. But that DNA isn’t on file anywhere.

Once Macy arrives and starts her investigation, talking again to the families and friends of the missing girl and then widening her net to include the rapist’s surviving victims, she and Nevada start to unearth a web of connections stretching back years and into the heart of the local community. The earliest victims – one of whom was Nevada’s cousin – were raped but survived, although the extensive bruising to their necks showed an attempt at strangulation. But Tobi’s death was due to asphyxiation, indicating an escalation by the perpetrator. When a body is found dumped by the side of the road – raped, strangled, her hands bound with the red rope that has been found on or with other victims – it becomes clear that whoever is responsible never stopped committing these crimes, they just did them elsewhere – and now, with a new disappearance – a young woman who is similar in appearance to the rapist’s other victims – Macy and Nevada are racing against the clock to find her alive and catch a clever killer who has so far managed to keep himself completely off the radar.

Hide and Seek is a fast-paced mystery with a wonderfully twisty-turny plot that kept me guessing almost until the very end. There’s a fairly large secondary cast here, all of whom have important parts to play, and the two central characters are likeable and well-defined. This is more of a suspense novel with romantic elements, but the author creates a strong connection between Macy and Nevada, showing clearly that they like and respect each other and that the attraction that prompted their short-lived fling is still very much present. Macy is still struggling with pain in her damaged leg and not sleeping well; in addition she’s started to have strange dreams which have become more prevalent lately, but she pushes through it, unwilling to admit that perhaps she’s not taken enough time to properly heal, physically or mentally. Nevada offers quiet, unwavering support, even to the point that he doesn’t dismiss Macy’s concerns over the fact she’s started to dream that one of the victims is pleading for her help; I’m not sure if there author was trying to introduce some sort of paranormal twist here, but it was a bit awkward and didn’t really add anything to the story.

[I’ll issue a warning here and say that we get a number of scenes from the killer’s PoV which shed light on his twisted motivations, and put the reader in the room with him and his victims. The descriptions of his actions are not especially graphic, but may be difficult for some to read.]

I enjoyed the story although the suspense plot wraps up at something of a whirlwind pace, but there’s an HFN for Macy and Nevada, and I’m hoping that perhaps we’ll see them again in future novels in the series. If you’re a fan of this author, then Hide and Seek won’t disappoint, and if you’ve not read her before, this would be a good jumping in point. ...more

Mary Burton hasn't let me down yet! Another gripping romantic suspense story - she is right up there with Karen Rose for this genre.

We met FBI profiler Special Agent Macy Crow in a previous novel Cut & Run (which was also excellent) and I really enjoyed this story set around her and Sheriff Mike Nevada in which they are investigating a crime going back over 10 years when the same sinister events start occurring again. Firstly I have not read this author, well I thought I hadn't but I have and this time around I was very pleased to say I really enjoyed this psycho killer, faced paced, twisty story.

I enjoyed the characters, and the romance was nice. What i did enjoy is the author can create a crime, and that it held my attention right until the end. It was very creepy, and I have to mention that the crimes, rape and such my bother some.

I look forward to the next instalment.

Hide and Seek is a quick and intense Mystery read that borrows its rapes and murders from the famous case of the Golden State Killer. The similarities between the novel and the real life tragedy, for those who are familiar with GSK and his crimes, makes the unfolding of the plot quite predictable. Even so, the characters are all very well developed and the narrative captures your attention.

Another great mystery by Mary Burton and they get better all the time. A rapist/murderer who had been at it for more than ten years, and Macy had been sent from Quantico to solve the case and was given only 5 days to do it, all the while still healing from a hit and run that almost killed her the year before. She would be working with an old lover of her's, Mike Nevada, and they would fall in love this time around.

This story was a little sadder and to be honest, more disgusting, than what I normally read. I didn't realize that I'd be reading first hand accounts about their rapes from the victims themselves. It made me sad and angry. I have daughters and this story just made me want to hold them close.

Overall, I enjoyed pacing and the second chance romance in this story. The romance wasn't sappy, as the MCs are older and generally more mature. There were no OTT TSTL moments and I appreciated ...more

When I finished reading Hide and Seek (in one sitting) at 10:00 PM, I was so deeply invested in Macy that I had to know what had happened to her before Hide and Seek began. I immediately bought, downloaded, and began reading Cut and Run, the first book in the series in which Macy's story begins. I was unable to put it down. I finished it at 3:00 AM. That's how good Burton is.
