The seventh novel from Michael Frederick. Autumn Letters is a coming-og-age story set in the mid-sixties, in America's Heartland, wehre the dark side of human nature was accepted as normal, where unspoken reality stood ready to reveal its pain to all of us who knew this awful/wonderous time. The story spans three years in the lives of four teenagers connected to a small Nebraska town called paradise.
An entertaining independent book. The characters were likeable. The writing was choppy and didn't flow at times. I felt like one character didn't stay true to his character by the end. Coming of age in the 1960's. Deals with death of parents, first love, abusive families, growing up.
This was a very slow moving book. I had pulled it off the shelves to give it back some life to see if I could get some of the kids interested in it. It was a coming of age story - but one I think the young adults in my library will have a hard time associating with.
