Vei, Vol. 1

Rate this book
In the midst of a bloody battle between giants, Asgardian gods, and humans, deceit and betrayal run wild. One warrior must fight to discover who she can trust and beat the odds to determine the ultimate fate of her people.

She trained her whole life to become the strongest warrior of Jotunheim, to become the beloved champion of her gods. But when the time came to finally prove her strength, Vei was cast into the sea by the very god she fought for.

Rescued by a Viking ship, Vei returns to Jotunheim, home of the legendary giants. There she finds herself caught in the Meistarileikir, a bloody game between the humans, the giants, and the gods of Asgard that will determine who will have the right to rule the land of Midgard. Having lost the confidence of her own god, Vei must take her place in the Meistarileikir and fight not only for the control of Midgard, but for her very life, in this epic battle against daring warriors, fearsome monsters, and even the gods themselves.

A bestseller in Sweden, Vei weaves together an incredible tale that pits man against God and God against God in an outstanding Hunger Games meets Norse mythology graphic novel.

"Vei" by Sara Elfgren is really good. Vei is a human who lives in Jotunheim. She reveres and serves the Frost Giants, the Jotun. The story begins with Vei's exile, where she is rescued by a crew of Vikings. A tenuous bargain is struck, as the Norse and Vei travel to Jotunheim.

There they find the Aesir have come for an annual contest, Meistarileikir, that pits the champions of the Aesir against the Jotun. Vei just happens, with a little help from Loki, to become one of these Champions. No more spoilers.

Sara Elfgren's writing is excellent and draws the reader in. Karl Johnson's art is quite good and does a great job with the realms and characters. This is certainly a peasant surprise, as I picked up this comic due to the cool cover. The story inside does not disappoint. If you're a fan of Norse myths, then you will like this comic. On to volume two soon.

2019 second review
I read this about a year ago and gave it 3 stars. However I decided to reread it before I read the second part and I really loved it!

The illustrations are probably the most beautiful I've seen in any graphic novel. Especially the bright coloring which fits the story great!

Other than the illustrations I really liked the take on Norse mythology. Vei is a great main character and the genderbending of Loki is amazing.

I love Vikings and their mythology. So I looked forward to Vei. The mythology-fantasy take by authors, who should be close to the topic (at least demographically). And well, I enjoyed it. The art is beautiful. Colours are bright. Work with the panels is excellent. I really enjoyed that, even when I laught hard to the "baby Jesus" feminine style man's faces or overplayed facial expressions. I enjoyed the story too. its simple story about pariah champion and unjust fight with the background note how the people are just chess set for the gods. The issue may be that the story is maybe too simple for 130-ish pages, basically, it feels more like events of one packed comics issue. That's a bit sad, but the art balances that, so it never gets boring, only like you should be getting more of the story. And I'm looking forward to the second book because we're left with quite a cliffhanger there.

What a book!

Thrilling, adventurous, unique and colorful with awesome characters, a great story and beautiful illustrations.

Vei is a strong main character who really gives the book that girl power feeling. She’s tough and well written and has a hot temper but still got her wits.

The story took a turn that I had not expected which I really liked.

I also got to say that it was impossible to put this book down and I regret that I didn’t buy Vei 2 at the Swedish book fair.

⭐️ “Vei 1” get 5/5 stars from me!

Hey, I just realized I hadn't added this to my reading list, and thus COMPLETING MY READING CHALLENGE 2017! wooo!

Since I have recently read Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman, it seemed very appropriate when the author of this graphic novel about norse myth came to my bookshop for a book signing. This isn't straightly "factual" mythology (as in taken from the Eddas and historical documents) but more a story taking place in that world. The giants and gods have a championship every now and then, where their appointed champions fight eachother and the winners get to rule Midgård where the humans live. Vei is the champion of the giants, and soon realize the gods aren't exactly following the rules. This I loved, because it is very true to the temperament of the Norse gods, they use cunning and rulebending whenever it fits the story.

The story is compelling, and I really liked their take on how the gods look. The enormous Freja really makes more sense than the skinny version I've seen so many times already. The genderbending Loke is also a very accurate account, I wonder how gender specific the Eddas are? I know he gives birth to Sleipnir while in the form of a mare, and that Loke's known to change shapes and gender many times, but it's just done so well in this novel.
Over all, the gender perspective really permeates the whole story, with the female Vei being the hero and driving force, and the male Dal being both the virgin (!), eye candy and sidekick. Such a small thing to be excited about, and yet so rarely seen in movies and novels.
The artist is talented and it's a very classic style of comic book drawing, but very well executed. My only complaint really is that it was too short, and there will only be one more part and then no more. I always want more.

Wholly inspired by and steeped in Norse mythology, this graphic novel created by Sara B. Elfgren and illustrated by Karl Johnsson tells the story of the warrior Vei. The Jotun and the Aesir once again are sending their champions to a battle-to-the-death contest, where the winning side gains the right to rule sacred Midgard. Just in time, Vei returns home to Jotunheim and is selected to represent her gods and her people in bloody battle.

Artwork - Stunning. This is my first time seeing Johnsson's illustrations and I already want more. To be honest, in graphic novels, I just need to artwork to be serviceable to the story that is being told. Many graphic novels do just that and nothing more. There are a few comics, however, that I come across from time-to-time that absolutely blow me away by the detail and coloring and beauty. The cover art to the character designs to the full-page spreads, it's all gorgeous. I particularly enjoyed a section in Chapter 4 where the art style changes as a character recounts their people's history. Attention to detail and design really helps with immersion and is always appreciated.

Dialogue - This is really the only spot that I have any criticism for. It's good dialogue and there is nothing distracting about it, but it is a bit weak at times. Cheesy or corny lines here and there caused half an eye roll, but little more. Everything else works here. Each character has their own distinct voice. The amount of words per page is perfect. I never felt like I was stuck reading for too long nor did I feel like there was any lack in communication.

Story - Fairly straightforward, but told in an engaging manner. I'm sold on all the characters, main and side included. It's fun to see new interpretations of gods I'm familiar with--Loki, Freya, Thor, Odin. In my book, you can't go wrong with a battleground competition where skilled warriors face off to the death. Vei is a powerhouse in a tiny body. She doesn't use magic (at least not yet), just raw skill. She isn't afraid. She's super fun. Her relationship with both Dal and Veidar are intriguing and I'm interested in seeing where Elfgren takes them. There is an instant sex scene including nudity, so reader beware. Also, the Jotun walk around with their tits out. And some of them have two sets so that's instantly double the nudity. Anyways... You don't have to know much (or anything) about Norse mythology to enjoy what's going on here. All of it is pretty well self-contained and well-told.

The story's not over. In fact, we land on a cliffhanger. Thankfully, there's Vei bok 2 to read next!

Quero continuar lendo a saga.

I have mixed feeling about this. Story is OK, nothing special, but not worst either. Problem is visual, as I'm not certain for who is book intended. Kind of childish art style and rainbow coloring would suggest younger audience. Rough vikings are depict as barbie princesses sometimes and character faces are strange. Partial nudity and moves it to some older audience. So young adult maybe? I don't know. I will try also second book when it is available to see how story wraps up, but over and all, first book is not great but not terrible either.

Very interesting graphic novel steeped in Norse mythology. After umpteen Thor stories from Marvel, it's a refreshing change to see a story told from the point-of-view of the Jotuns (the giants) and their human "herds," including Vei, the champion of Veidar in the Meistarileikir, a tournament fought between the the giants and the Aesier, including Odin and Thor. The Aesir are not the good guys here. The artwork is interesting and a bit variable. Strong for the most part, but occasionally a bit too cartoony. I'll be interested to see where this goes in volume 2.
