Threatening to fling her off the merry go round of life’s hurdles, Serena desperately wonders how to cling on. Would her life have been filled with calm and contentment if she hadn’t married Randolph, a mysterious half Russian who revelled in his own fantasies? From a tiny charming cottage in the folds of the Somerset hills, she finds herself in a magnificent but near derelict mansion in Carcassonne. As they lurch from one financial crisis to the next, battling with French bailiffs and even the Gendarmerie, Randolph adopts the role of an English gentleman abroad with aplomb, whilst they attempt, despite everything, to ‘live the dream.’ Fighting to keep a roof over their heads against corrupt local officialdom, the French legal system and its impossible bureaucracy, the situation almost brings them to their knees. Slowly their lives turn into a nightmare, forcing Serena to sleep in an attic whilst struggling alone to confront Randolph’s financial incompetence and double life. Disentangling herself from the past was never going to be straightforward. Just when she thought life had finished dealing her more low blows, she is tripped up again. Waking up in a hospital bed she is forced to face her demons head on... Last Tango in Carcassonne is a refreshingly different debut novel which will make you laugh, wince and cry.
I couldn't put it down, I found Serena's story compelling, I found the descriptions of Carcasonne and French life very real and very rich. Moreover, the central relationship between Serena and Randolph really gripped me, many women and men have lived through similar and have managed to survive. An incredible journey written by a brave woman.
A thoroughly enjoyable book I couldn't put it down a great story and insight into a womans struggle and strength through difficult relationships to come out the other side and find happiness .Lovely descriptions of life in rural France and Dorset.Very well written a must read. Interesting and thought provoking. Proving the grass isn’t greener on the other side, just a fresh patch. Why is it that smart, strong women don’t always make good choices. A read that makes you reflex your own highs and lows. An enjoyable read
Loved this book from the beginning in Warwickshire to the journey to France. My emotions went up and down with serena through the whole book. Would recommend this good read to any age.
