Another great read from another great Aussie author. You Don't Know Me was a super quick read for me. I started it on Saturday night and by lunchtime on Sunday I was finished. The story was written at a fast pace and there were plenty of twists and revelations to keep you hooked right from the very beginning. I have read one other book by Sara Foster and will be looking out for more.

You Don’t Know Me is the sixth novel by British-born Australian author, Sara Foster. When Noah Carruso first sees Alice Pryce on the deck of a river taxi in Thailand, he feels like he’s seen a ghost. Fascinated, Noah follows Alice. It turns out that she is teaching English in Thailand, although that’s not the real reason she’s there, but sharing that secret with this attractive Aussie from Sydney’s Northern Beaches is not going to happen. Nonetheless, there is a mutual attraction, to which they soon can’t help but succumb. It rather too quickly starts to feel like the real thing: love.

Noah wants to stay longer, but his parents are hassling him to return to his job managing the family restaurant: the strain on his injured father is telling. And he has to be home for the upcoming inquest into Lizzie’s disappearance. Facing his brother, after Tom’s absence of eleven years, is something he dreads. Avoiding journalist Rachel Lawrence, the tenacious author of the current podcast about Lizzie, is also a priority.

Noah is missing Alice, but she has problems of her own, a situation that forces her back to Australia when it’s the last thing she wants to do. She can’t imagine how Noah would react to the secrets and trauma and guilt and shame she holds. But Noah hasn’t been entirely honest with Alice either.

A twin narrative (Noah and Alice alternating chapters) tells the story with the podcast transcript used as a (quite topical) device for providing background information about Lizzie’s disappearance. Foster deftly demonstrates the mixed power of the media: the podcast alerts potential witnesses to offer up possible evidence, but also incites mischief and malice from certain members of the public.

Foster’s sixth novel is very cleverly plotted: there are numerous red herrings and several parties try to shift suspicion away from themselves by implicating others. The agent of Lizzie’s ultimate fate is unlikely to be on the radar of even the most astute reader. This would be a five-star read but for one essential detail about the likely actions of a seventeen-year-old girl that stretches the reader’s credibility a bit too far. Still an excellent piece of Australian crime fiction.

The Hidden Hours is the last book I have read by Sara Foster, a British author who now resides in my home state of Western Australia. I have been waiting patiently for You Don’t Know Me to arrive on my doorstep. As soon as I started Sara Foster’s sixth book, I found myself unwilling to put this title down! You Don’t Know Me is a brilliant blend of contemporary domestic fiction, a compelling romance, a whodunit mystery and a crime, all wrapped up in the same casing. I enjoyed every moment of this novel and I firmly believe it is another remarkable achievement by one of my favourite authors.

You Don’t Know Me is structured in the form of double voice narrative. The novel alternates between the compelling voices of Noah Carruso and Alice Pryce. These two lead characters become a couple during the progression of the novel. Noah and Alice’s romance is swift and intimate. I have to admit that I got caught up in their dalliance from the onset. I appreciated the exotic setting backdrop of Thailand, which enables this heated romance to flourish. Noah and Alice are very different people, who meet at time where both are not willing, or ready to commit to love. However, the attraction is propulsive and undeniable. It reminds us that love and romance often comes looking for us when we least expect it. This is an authentic style romance that caught me off guard, I was quite taken aback by this couple. I was determined that they would find a way to be together, despite their setbacks!

At the essence of You Don’t Know Me is Lizzie Burdett’s disappearance. If you are a mystery, thriller and crime fiction fan, this novel will have you swiftly turning the pages over, in a bid to get to the truth of this perplexing case. Foster offers up plenty of possible scenarios for Lizzie’s case, all of which appeared to be completely plausible. She also casts the perfect level of doubt over a number of her key protagonists, which serves to ramp up the mystery level of this book even further. Added layers of an authentic inquest sequence and an intriguing true crime podcast, which was very here and now, provided further speculation into this baffling case. I was hanging out to solve this case! I will be upfront and mention that I did not predict the final outcome of events in any possible form, which is always welcoming! It is good to be duped by an astute writer!

The heavy weight of shame, the onus of family responsibilities, the inherent need to pursue the truth and the strains of guilt exemplify Sara’s Foster, You Don’t Know Me. With echoes of the past, lost love and ill decisions surrounding this title, mystery readers will want to add You Don’t Know Me to the top of their reading lists.

I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding Lizzie’s disappearance, the details of which are communicated through the transcript of a podcast. Foster presents several suspects, and creates some stunning twists as the coronial inquiry plays out. I was left guessing about what happened to Lizzie, and who was responsible, until very nearly the end.

While Noah struggles with his conscience, Alice unexpectedly returns to Australia when her father is badly injured and must face her own demons. The combined drama and its emotional toll leaves its mark on Noah and Alice’s fledgling relationship, which Foster explores thoughtfully as they try to support one another through all the turmoil, and desperately attempt to hold on to the joy they find in each other.

I found You Don’t Know Me to be gripping story.

I enjoyed this book, and the fast pace and intrigue helped get me out of a bit of a reading slump! Alice and Noah were pretty interesting characters, and they bounced off each other well, revealing just enough to each other to keep readers guessing about what secrets they were hiding. I was thrilled to receive an early copy of “You Don’t Know Me” by Sara Foster from Better Reading and it didn’t disappoint!
I enjoyed this book from the outset. It’s a quick page turner and keeps you wondering which direction the story will take next. The mystery of “what happened to Lizzie Burdett” was intriguing and I was always guessing as to who the real villain was. However, when the truth was finally revealed I wasn’t expecting it all …… I love a surprising twist!

My View:
Sara Foster is an excellent storyteller and a nice person to boot :)

What Sara always does well:
Dialogue – always realistic, fitting of the age groups involved/the relationships, the times.
Relationships – so well developed and again, realistic.
Surprises – the twists are good and in this one I couldn’t see the revelation coming.
The writing – always engaging.

What more could you want in a book? A great read.

“You Don’t Know me” was an enjoyable easy to read “who dunnit” story. The realistic characters, the love story and the building suspense of what really happened to Lizzie kept me engrossed. The twist was a surprise and I had no idea who had committed the crime until it was revealed which, for me makes a good story. The story of Alice and her dad was almost a side story and I would have liked more on them… maybe another book in there?

I started it on Friday night and had finished it by Monday night - I even took it to work to read over a lunch break and I haven't read a book at lunch time for nearly 10 years!

When ticking the 'genre' of this book for this post I added romantic suspense because - though not generally a fan of 'romance' as such - I was completely smitten with the burgeoning romance that underpinned much of this novel. The book opens as our two leads, Alice and Noah meet, and I adored their relationship and the way it grew. It felt... well, um romantic.

Of course it's hampered by a backstory of long-kept secrets, guilt and death, so it's not all rainbows and kittens.

I recently won a early reading copy of You don't know me by Sara Foster from Better Reading. It is a tale of lost love ghosts of the past and confronting these ghosts. It's a story of forgiveness and redemption, love and retribution. It's full of unexpected twists and was a pleasure to read. I read it in a day as it was totally captivating from page 1. I'LL definitely be looking for more of Sara Foster's books as I loved her easy style of writing.

Oh my favourite, an Aussie based book by …ok Sara Foster is from the UK, but she does live in Western Australia.
Was hooked right from the start of the book. What happened to Lizzie??

Is the truth worth telling if it will destroy everything

I have decided to do this review a little differently than normal. I plan to review what I have read around every 25% mark of the book, so anyone who doesn't want spoilers it is probably best not to read for here on out.

So far Alice and Noah have met and they can't seem to be away from each other, which is a little hard for me to believe with what both have been through that I know about so far. I really don't have much of an opinion on either of them yet other than you can tell there is so much more to both their stories.

I am enjoying the book so far and I am having a hard time putting it down because I am waiting for the big plot twist (I thought for a second Alice may of been Lizzie but I seem to be wrong so far). I will be back around the 50% mark and let you know if I am still enjoying it as much as I am now and what mysteries have unravelled if any.

I am now 50% into it and I still am just as hooked as I was from the beginning. Both Characters are back in Australia for different reasons but have still managed to get a chance to see each other (which is where I am up to). I can tell that both Alice and Noah are both not telling the whole stories about their situations and I do have a theory about both, but I don't want to say anything just in case I am wrong and I don't want to spoilt to much of this book if people are reading this without reading the book first. Now on to the net 25% of the book and see if some of my questions are answered or I have more questions.

I am now 75% into it and one thing I was predicting was right but I still think there is more to come with Alice. I am really into this book more than I was even expecting I just wish I had more time to read instead of being busy. I am excited to see how this book concludes and if all my predictions are right. Will see very soon because I plan to finish it tonight.

Well I did not see that ending coming at all and it was sad but satisfying at the same time. I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars and anyone looking for a good mystery will love this.

My Thoughts…

PLOT: The mystery surrounding a girl's death. The author used a podcast as a device to help uncover the truth. This is not the first novel I’ve read in recent times to use a podcast as part of the narrative. I have a feeling it will not be the last!
PACE: The author has made this novel more about depth than an edge-of-your seat ride. That said, the story was engaging from start to end.
LANDSCAPE: Partly set in Palm Beach, on Sydney’s norther beaches—an area I remember well from my youth—and contrasted with the surrounds of Thailand.
LIKEABLE CHARACTERS / UNLIKABLE CHARACTERS: Again, the focus was on the mystery. The characters played their roles, the mystery was solved.
OVERALL FEELINGS ABOUT THE STORY: The two main characters developed a relationship and, I thought, fell in love. But the author delivered a bit of a plot twist, with an ending that surprised me, but it was not my favourite part of the novel.
I have read and loved many Sarah Foster novels and I wish I could say I loved this as much as all the others. But to be fair, I have taken longer than usual to read this story due to life (and fires) getting in the way.

Sara Foster has become an auto read for me and I’m happy to say this lived up to expectations.

Alice has been living in Bangkok and teaching English in a local school, the last thing she expects is to fall hard for Noah, a fellow Australian on holiday in Thailand. But both have been tormented by situations in life, can they overcome these barriers to move on?

I'm sorry to say I had to put this one down... maybe to be picked up another day? As noted in the blurb, this story was about two people who began a relationship while withholding secrets from their past. Noah and Alice meet in Thailand. Alice is the doppelganger of Lizzie, the missing girlfriend of Noah's elder brother, Tom. Noah has been haunted by Lizzie's disappearance for 12 years. Alice also has secrets of her own and she can't go back to Australia.
