My middle school received a free copy of this book through a district review program where library staff just has the read the book and then give our opinion on it. I am happy to add this one to our collection which I feel could definitely do with more non-fiction LGBTQ related books. This title is meant as an introduction for teens to the discrimination that members of the LGBTQ community face within some of the major institutions of American life such as the criminal justice system and the health care system. While kids today are more likely to already be aware of homophobia or transphobia as a broad concept this book is mostly related to topics that many are probably not yet aware of, such as the difficultly LGBTQ individuals can face when looking for safe and affordable housing or the bias many of them encounter in at the hands of law enforcement or in our courts and prisons.
I am glad to say that this book is an example of one that actually does touch on all the letters in the LGBTQ acronym and the author makes a point that even among the community trans men and women are often even more vulnerable. There is also a short section on the concept of intersectionality and the fact that even among the community experiences are often different because of additional factors such as race or class. Overall this is a very informative book and I would be interested in getting some of the other titles in the series for my library as well.
