A story--set in early twentieth-century rural Georgia--follows two parentless young sisters, one conventionally beautiful, the other with a more eccentric attraction, and explores the concepts of beauty within our society. Tour.
Awesome story. Written beautifully. This was a "on the whim" book, the cover caught my eye as it was the last book on a shelf looking at me. The library holds so many wonderful books hidden from me I bet. Luckily, I spotted this. Great characters, coming of age during the old circus days. Very well done!!
I definitely have mixed feelings about this book. I really liked the characters. The problem for me, though, was that I believe Sharlee Dieguez could have been a little more meticulous in her research. Her use of the carnival lingo was pretty far off, the main characters often spoke in slang that was much more modern than the setting of the book, and I found some of the plot hard to believe. Beyond that, the story was sweet, the characters were entertaining, and her descriptions were fairly rich. Not a bad read.
This one had been sitting on my bookshelf for a while. The cover immediately caught my attention. It was a simple read. About halfway through Part 2, I just lost interest for some reason.
This was one of my favorite novel's. I just loved it! A book w/ very touching characters to go along w/ a touching story. A book about life, love, being different, coming of age & acceptance. A story that will make you laugh & also stop to think.
