Slavery isn't a life, but neither is one without family.

Hisime Ara has been abused by her guardians her whole life, but at least she hasn't been separated from her younger brother. She has nowhere to run to, and even if she did, she'd try to take her brother with her.

But everything changes when Royal Elves come to their small hamlet. Hisime sees it as a chance to finally e

A very short and entertaining read that I finished in one setting.

A slave with no hope. A brother she can’t save.

Hisime and her brother Cadamore have been raised by two guardians, ever since the death of their parents. While Cadamore is treated like a prince, Hisime is the drudge and punching bag of the household.
Treated like a slave, she is made to work from dawn till dusk. Given

I bought this book a few years ago at Denver Pop Culture Con and decided that it was time to sit down and read it as part of my #ClearingTheHoard challenge. This tiny little novella looked like something that would be right up my alley. I love fantasy & a short novella sounded like it would be perfect for the end of the month.

Unfortunately, I never felt connected with the characters. Hisime & Cadamore could have been interesting characters but they felt very two

"Royal Elves" taps into that deep dream, held by so many of us, that we were meant for another life. Hisime endures physical and emotional beatings and deprivation at the hands of her guardians, who have kept the knowledge of her true lineage from her and her brother. Her brother, Cadamore, receives much better treatment and training; but she is a loving and selfless sister, never despising him for having what is so cruelly denied to her. "She laughed with him though she felt fear in her stomach ...more

A short but entirely engaging read.

I found Hisime to be an interesting character. I'm curious what comes next for her. The only things that were slightly negative were time skips (a little jarring) and I couldn't feel the connection between her and the elf. I also didn't like her brother and his overall attitude about their foster parents (they abused her but treated him like a prince, so he still loved/thought well of them despite them nearly killing her).
Jeffrey A. Dewey

Interesting storyline with twists and turns as coming of age while learning of their lineage and the choices they have to make.
