A gripping new novel from New York Times bestselling suspense author Terri Blackstock.

Terri Blackstock has been writing Christian fiction and suspense novels for a number of years and has had over 30 titles published. Smoke Screen is her most recent release and my first Blackstock book. And it won't be my last!

Blackstock writes like the veteran she is. Her writing style is polished, yet simple and engaging. I found myself very easily drawn into the story within a page or two. The plot and pacing are flawless; while not especially action-packed, there's never a moment that drags.

SMOKE SCREEN by Terri Blackstock is her new standalone Christian second chance romance. This is an entertaining and intriguing easy-to-read romance with realistic characters and a mystery subplot.

Fourteen years ago, while in high school, Brenna Strickland, the pastor’s daughter and Nate Beckett, the son of the town drunk fell in love. When Brenna was found to be defying her father and sneaking out to meet Nate, Pastor Strickland

Smoke Screen is a smart new mystery from bestselling author, Terri Blackstock.

Brenna Strickland Hertzog is a divorced single mom with a drinking problem she tries to hide. She’s resentful of her narcissistic ex-husband. Brenna has returned to her hometown after a contentious divorce, with no thought that her teenage sweetheart would move in across the street.

Nate Beckett is a smoke jumper injured while saving a family from a fire. He has returned to his hometown to heal while he is on a one

Smoke Screen was a very good suspense read from Terri Blackstock. I've read and loved several of her previous novels, so I was eager to read this one. It didn't disappoint. While I didn't certain aspects of the story (not a fan of stories with divorce), I did enjoy the story overall.

I liked how the main characters were sweethearts in their youth, so they had a second chance at love...that was cute. Also, the mystery was entertaining and held my interest. I didn't expect everything that

Smoke Screen by Terri Blackstock is a story about hope, redemption, and overcoming devastating hurdles in life.

Brenna is now a single mother after her ex-husband left her for a younger woman. He’s determined to take the kids away from her and she is devastated. She turns to drinking to cope.

Nate, a smokejumper for a group of hotshots fighting wildfires in Colorado, returns to his home town after suffering from some severe burns. Returning to the town he grew up in his tough. He’s not liked here

Terri Blackstock should have the title Queen of Romantic Suspense. I downloaded this book after church on Sunday and thought I would just peruse a few pages to see what it was about. I didn't stop until after midnight when I read The End. Seriously, I could not put this book down. I loved the hero. He was definitely that. A hero. The heroine was one I had to warm up to, but could empathize with. She was in a very bad place in her life. As far as the bad guy, I had an idea who it was, but it ...more

I have likes and dislikes about this story. I liked Nate's character. I thought he was perfect hero material. I loved how humble he was and how he was willing to give his fellow jumpers credit for the daring rescue he performed. I loved how he stepped in to help Brenna through her problem. I loved that they had a past when they were younger and that they seem to pick up where they left off. Brenna on the other hand annoyed me. Thoroughly! I'm not a fan of hysterical/weak women and Brenna was ...more

Suspense is definitely something I read a TON of Terri Blackstock is also an author who I have read everything she has written. So when I heard Blackstock was writing another book, I couldn't wait to get my hand on it. With her newest novel, Smoke Screen, I wouldn't really classify it as a suspense novel. There was an element of surprise in the plot, but it didn't have the spine chilling chase from something or someone that Blackstock's stories usually do. Smoke Screen reminded me a lot of ...more

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Smoke Screen is one of the best Christian Fiction books I have read recently. Nate Beckett who is a smoke jumper fire fighter who finds his life turned sideways which leads him back to home town of Carlisle, Colorado to heal his wounds. Back home he crosses paths with a past love in Brenna who is struggling in her own life situation. Will the pains of the past continue to haunt both of them or

'God is powerful. He could be my dread champion, my rear guard, the one who fihts for me. But I feel like I'm fighting all alone.'

Terri Blackstock returns with a captivating new novel told in two different POVs. Nate Beckett's father spent fourteen years in prison for killing Brenna Strickland's preacher father. Now, Nate's father has been released and Nate has returned to town to recover from a burn injury he's gotten on his job as a smokejumper. Brenna has also returned to town, divorced and

Smoke Screen was an enjoyable book filled with twists and turns to keep the readers guessing. Author Terri Blackstock has a way of dipping deep into the readers’ emotions and creating an authentic story that is both relatable and compelling. Her portrayal of the contentious custody battle between Jack and Brenna was unfortunately very realistic and common with parents who have gone through a divorce. My heart broke for Brenna as she had to deal with all the ugliness and hatred from her ...more

This book was not what I was expecting at all. It was more like a depressing fictional drama than a suspense book. I could not find myself rooting for any of the characters and I really wanted more in the way of mystery, suspense, and plot in general. 90% of the book focused on Brenna’s alcoholism and custody battle. She was hard to empathize with and hard to like. I have a hard time thinking that the alcoholic needs custody of her children. I’m not sure what Nate saw in her and that made me ...more

Smoke Screen is a story about family, love, wrongs dealt unjustly, reputations and the havoc of a messy divorce and custody battle.

Brenna is a mess after her husband left her for a much younger woman and is now fighting for custody of their two young children. Brenna has turned to alcohol to cope and the news that the man responsible for murdering her father has been pardoned only heightens her stress levels. When smoke jumper, Nate Beckett hears of his father’s pardon, he has no intention of

The above synopsis is a bit misleading. When I started this book, I thought I was going to be reading a book leaning more on suspense. Yes, it was there, especially when it came to Nate Beckett. He is a fire jumper who has taken time off to recover from serious burns due to a major forest fire. He returns to his hometown to heal. He does not walk into open arms, however. When Nate left, it was under a shroud of doubt and suspicion. Fourteen years previously, Nate's father was

Smoke Screen is different for the usual suspense novel that Terri Blackston usually write. There was still some suspense toward the end but not the heart pounding danger that the heroine is usually in. This story is told from the viewpoint of two characters. Brenna Strickland Hertzog has been through a lot in her 30 yeas of life. When she was 16 her minister father was supposedly murdered by her boyfriend's father. Years go by and she marries Jack Hertzog. Jack is a jerk and dumps her to marry a ...more

A fun romantic suspense with 2 characters on the opposite ends with one whose father was murdered and the other whose father was the murderer. The premise itself was quite intriguing.

Brenna, a single mother fighting for the custody of her kids, whose preacher father was killed and Nate, a smoke jumper who spent his life fighting fires, whose father had apparently killed the preacher and was now pardoned after 14 years of prison. Brenna and Nate were high school sweethearts whose love ended with

Smoke Screen is a riveting book dealing with difficult subject matter and hurting characters.

Blackstock had a way of roping me into the elements and the characters and their various tragedies. And there were many. Phew, I wasn't sure how this was going to work out for Brenna and Nate. The characters were very real and I came to care for all of them deeply. Brenna was broken but in like a strong way, and Nate was like an actual saint. With that said, I say we kill Brenna's ex, and his new wife,

"Nothing bad had ever happened to me at that point. I had the perfect life. It was easy to be spiritual."

Now it seems, that nothing is going right in her life. Injured firefighter Nate Beckett returns home to recover—and reacquaint himself with his father, the man accused of murdering Brenna’s father. Family, reputations, secrets, jealousy, faith, romance, and truth all tie into the obstacles that Brenna and Nate must overcome, making for quite an emotional story.

It's another well-written novel from Terri Blackstock that is reminiscent of her Moonlighters series. It has intrigue regarding what may be considered "cold cases" from the past but the emphasis is more on the family drama and relationships as Brenna struggles through an ugly divorce and its aftermath and her old high school sweetheart returns to their hometown. There is a lot of backstory involved in Brenna and Nate's tumultuous high school relationship and the outcome of that past relationship ...more

Being back in his home town in Colorado, Nate wasn’t especially excited about how the town folks would receive him. But with Brenna living across the street from his brother, with whom he was staying, he was about to find out. Issues between the two families have been strained for many years, with no show for then to ever be any different.

I love, love this story! Terri Blackstock is one of my favorite authors, her books exceed all of my expectations for a book! Smoke

Ok, I totally fell in love with this book. And it not because I’ve been on a Terri Blackstock deprivation. The book was sooo amazing!! To me,
it wasn’t as mystery like, if you get what I’m saying, but there was an abusive ex husband that constantly pissed me off so that made up for less grotesque events. There was a blind side small plot twist in the end, which was awesome. I always love when authors do that!! And the godly message that Blackstock portrays is outstanding. This

Their past has come full circle...

While I can't say that I even remotely begin to understand Brenna's choices, specifically turning to liquid 'help' when life got tough. But, what I can say is that it's about time someone peels back our plastic Sunday faces and dare to shine a little light of reality into fiction. Author Terri Blackstock has bared the unmentionable before in her Intervention series, where a mother deals with a child addicted to drugs, and, she has done it again in Smoke Screen.
I love Terri Blackstock’s stories. She is a master at writing romantic suspense and I absolutely loved her Christmas novella Catching Christmas. I was so excited to read this story, but sadly, it just did not work for me - on any level.

I have to be able to root for a character to feel invested in a story, and I just struggled to find someone to root for. For me, it was really hard to root for Brenna or her ex-husband when it came to their kids. I felt like neither option was good. I also felt

The title the author gives this book is perfect, and shows up in more than one way, and it becomes crystal clear as you go further into this story.
There appears to be a lot going on here in this small Colorado town, but the action begins in another part of the state with smoke jumpers, and a horrible wild fire, lives are at stake here.
Things do not get more comfortable here, and there is a lot at risk, especially in the lives of young children.
You will be quickly immersed here, and you won’t

Kept you guessing on how this book was going to end and who really committed the murder...and arson of the Church. Loved the main characters.
The importance of forgiveness and being forgiven plus keeping your faith in God even when life throws you some curves.
