I loved this book. It was a great story and thought provoking. Animals could talk and were following the Fire Cloud to the Ark because they had been called by The Maker. What a neat thought that they followed a Fire Cloud. The “beasties” were polite, respectful, and helped one another. Sometimes their names matched their personality. There was an educational aspect to the book with animals from different parts of the world. Nicely, all the foreign words and lingo were in the back for reference. The author wrote animal traits into the story in such a creative way, ie. the hen was bossy, the praying mantis prayed, the wolves with scary, etc.
Besides the animals following the Fire Cloud to get to the Ark, the book was thought provoking in another way. It turns out that there were 3 snakes on the ark because The Evil One was also on the Ark. He is always on the move to steal, kill, and destroy. When he talks, it sounds good and true. He is often just a little off. It’s subtle.
Quotes I liked:
“Sometimes a question grows into more questions rather than a single answer. ‘Tis the way of life, Max. If there is a purpose for you beyond what you know, the all-powerful One—the Maker—always has a way of making it known. He will give you a revelation and show you what to do. You may not understand it. You may fight it. You may be afraid of it,. But if it comes from the Maker, you can always trust it.” Gillamon paused and leaned in close to look Max right in the eye. “The true question is: Will you follow it, Max?”
“A word of caution,” Gillamon continued, but with a serious tone. “The Evil One who started the trouble in the Garden remains, causing problems for humans and for all creation. Always be on your guard when you’re around humans. Wherever there are humans, you can be sure that the Evil One will be near as well. And he is a deceiver, Max. If he so easily deceived them, you can be sure he can easily deceive animals as well.”
“Protecting children is what parents do. And if that means laying their lives down to save their children, that’s what they will do. That’s how much parents love their children. It is of no consequence to them. They love with a fierce love that knows no boundaries. I suspect that your mother loved you so much that she would have chased you all the way to China to get you back,” Gillamon said, smiling.
“Trust that she knew what she was doing when she came after you. Trust that her love for you was worth more to her than whatever she had to go through out there to protect you. Trust that she would have done what she did whether you deserved to be rescued or not. Trust that whatever happened to her wasn’t in vain,” Gillamon instructed, trying to get Max to understand.
Liz hesitated. What she was about to tell Max would most certainly upset him. It could damage their friendship. But she didn’t see another way around it. She had to speak what she felt to be the truth. Too much was at stake here.
