God doesn't have a favorite color... God made fish, bugs, birds, and kids in many different shades. All colors of kids are wonderful, and you are one of His fantastic colorful children! In the award winning picture book When God Made Color, the wonders of Creation are spread out before you in all the glories of the the deep purples and blues of night, the bright yellows of day, and the pinks and oranges of flowers. And of course, the colors of all the creatures...including us! The brilliantly-colored illustrations will inspire parent and child alike as together they explore the wonders of God's incredible universe. The paintings and text interact visually, creating a heartwarming Listen-Look-Locate experience.
This was such an enjoyable book to show children diversity, and the true power of God’s creation of us all. Just as each color in the world is different, so are people, and that is perfectly okay! The world would be so bland if we were all the same. The author did a great job in keeping the tone light, light enough for a very young reader to grasp the concept of the story, yet have fun while reading.
The illustrations are bright, eye catching, and beautiful. They easily show the contrast in colors, and how wonderfully they compliment each other. The animals are stunning. I’m not sure how the illustrator managed to color them in a way that makes them have a 3Dish feel to them, but there were many times I thought they could jump (or swim) right off the page.
A fun retelling of the creation story will have young readers smiling, laughing, and asking for this story again and again! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
WHEN GOD MADE COLOR is certainly a colorful book and will definitely appeal to children's eyes. It tells the story of creation in a whole new way which I absolutely loved until day six when God made man -- and instead of making Adam and Eve He made a whole world full of colorful faces all at once. Which is not exactly what happened at that point and time.
My daughter took issues with colors just popping out - she likes to think God created it colorful (which I think He did) instead of black and white and then pop goes the color. But it was a fun book.
If you are looking for a new approach to the creation story, here it is. WHEN GOD MADE COLOR.
A truly beautiful book in every way -- beautiful pictures, beautiful words, a beautiful message. I highly recommend this book to everyone with children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, neighborhood children, anyone who would benefit from a beautifully told story of creation and God's love for every color.
The story of creation has shown up in numerous books for children and adults over the years. This retelling is a bit different from anything I have seen before, and as you can imagine, the emphasis is on the colors of creation, making it an option for teaching color in addition to the creation story.
There is mention of God yet no doctrine, so anyone, Christian, Jew or others who believe the Biblical account of creation could use this book to teach their children about it.
The illustrations are big and bold and complement the prose and fill the senses with color. Their feel reminds me of a tropical paradise.
In addition to teaching colors and the events of creation, the story also speaks of the diversity of colors in God’s children, emphasizing the color of the eyes in the text and the colors of skin and hair in the illustrations, and thus this could be a good book for teaching diversity to children.
As a long-time teacher, I am very particular about the books and curriculum I use and find there are very popular books used by many Christians that bother me. Part of that stems from hearing children refusing to accept that something they saw in a video about a Biblical character isn’t fact. This nitpickiness has me disconcerted with the way When God Made Color goes from telling of the events of each specific day of creation and then on the final day, after telling of the creation of the land animals, it jumps to telling how God created his children in all sorts of colors. Not creating Adam and Eve – creating all His children. I do understand the point of this and that the author carefully doesn’t specify when the children were created, or how, yet it bothers me enough I felt I should mention it.
Parents or teachers desiring to give a Biblical view of creation may enjoy using this book to teach it, though be certain to point out that the children weren’t all created on that same day. 🙂 at Among the Reads""
I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review nor was any money received for this review. All comments and opinions are my own.
This is an update to my review from May 2019. There has been an update to this book. The author contacted me to let me know that due to my comment about not mentioning Adam and Eve in a section of the story they took it to heart. The author and publisher felt an update to the text was needed to mention Adam and Eve in the context. I originally gave it a three-star and that was the main reason I did because I felt it was a vital part of our creation. Because of the update, I felt that it should reflect a five-star review. I honestly had no quips with the rest of the book. It just goes to show that honesty and professional critique can make a difference. I added pictures of the update and the older version.
I adore children’s books. I love the illustrations that are in children’s books. I just love the stories and the wide-eyed kids while reading them. I also love children's books that come from a Biblical perspective. I miss reading to my kids when they were little. I know all my time spent reading to them gave them a love of books as teenagers.
When God Made Colors is a book that caught my breath away! I love the colors and art. It had that WOW factor with the bold colors and the lovely illustrations. The book will surely grab the eyes of little ones to let their imagination soar while reading about God’s Creation.
This is a paperback book that talks about the days of Creation up to day 6 with the creation of man. This is a whimsical tale about creation that talks about the beauty and wonder of God’s creation with all the amazing colors we see around us. The story has some creative liberty with the story, but I expect that in a book that isn’t a Bible and for children. However, the Creation story is still in tack and I feel it keeps pretty true to the story in the Bible.

"When God Made Color" is simply stunning - both due to the artwork and the timeless message. I read this post-pandemic, and realize it is especially important to teach children about their inherent value as our nation remains divided on issues of race.
Author Sheri Carmon was the 2019 Bronze Medalist in the Readers' Favorite International Book Contest, and I can see why!
The core message is that God made us in every color and He loves us all equally. Children - and adults who read it to them - can be renewed with this message and see with new eyes, its beauty, hope and promise.
Because of the message it sends, it makes an excellent gift for children at their birth, at their adoption into a new family, for Easter, Christmas, baptisms, 1st communions, confirmations and birthdays. It will speak to children in mixed-race homes, children who are welcoming or have adopted siblings of a different race, and frankly to ALL children. We are all called to "love our neighbor."
My favorite page? "Let there be LIGHT." The artwork is astonishingly beautiful, and the message - through the Creation Story in Genesis - is inviting and fun for every stage:
- Toddlers will love pointing at the colors and items on each page. - Early grade-school children can learn to read with it, finding beginning-level words to sound out. - As children mature they will see the beauty in the message that God made all of His children different for His glory.
It's okay to look different from our neighbors. God doesn't have favorites. It has been part of His plan from the beginning. In His eyes, we are infinitely loved. Your kids, grandchildren, church family, godchildren, and neighbors will all enjoy it!
"Isaac’s Ice Cream Tree" by Angela Henderson & "When God Made Color" by Sheri Carmon are two really cute children's books.
"When God Made Color" by Sheri Carmon is a book about creation and how God used all the different colors to create the world and all of its many wonders, such as fish, bugs, birds, flowers and leaves and etc and his greatest creation which is people and how He made us all different. The pages in this book is very colorful. I think for children that is familiar with the creation story, this book is a very good reminder and I think so of them would like to look at the pictures and tell the adults the story in their own words.
"Isaac’s Ice Cream Tree" by Angela Henderson is a fun story about a tree and how a boy shares his treats with it and the tree in turn gives him icecream. I really feel that all children would really enjoy hearing this story over and over again. I am sure that most children would enjoy looking at the pictures and telling the story to the adults in their lives.
Both of these books would make great birthday presents for children and if you are like me and like to give books as babies showers gifts, I would recommend these two, of course it would be awhile before the child could really read them but I like to give gifts that can be used later and something that others doesn’t give and gifts that keeps on giving and books definitely keep on giving.
I was given a complimentary copy of both books by the authors and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.
My first thought in reading the title of this book was that it would be a concept book about color. If this is what the author intended, I am not sure it is what was achieved. Author Sheri Carmon did write a beautiful text including all of the colors and tying them to the days of creation. The illustrations by Silver Bluebird Studios are colorful and full of detail. Unfortunately, they don’t always complement each other.
If readers are looking for a Christian book to teach the colors, When God Made Color really isn’t the book to do that. Each page contains text about many colors and the illustrations include many colors. When looking for a book to teach colors, it is best to have just one main color per page. In looking at some of the pages, the illustrations did not include all the colors/images mentioned in the text.
If readers are looking for a book about the colors in creation, When God Made Color may work. Readers could direct listeners to find the different colors and creatures of the text on the page – although that is not possible with everything mentioned in the text.
I would consider When God Made Color a picture book that might be nice to have in our K-12 Christian school library, but not one I would necessarily purchase with my limited funds.
I want to thank Celebrate Lit for the complimentary copy of When God Made Color.
When God Made Color by Sheri Carmon did not disappoint it is vibrant in color, creative in vocabulary and my kiddos were engaged! Not only is this a creative and thoughtful take on the creation story, but the vivid artwork had the kids captivated. The details and intricacies of the illustrations made reading it many times a delight for both the adult and the children.
Knowing the creation story well I was grateful for how Caron extended the details and creativity that I believe is part of the story without adding to the truth of the Scriptural context. We have so many details from the Bible about creation and yet there are still so many unknowns. This book is a wonderful way to open the door to creation conversations with kids and also the vibrant and unusually creative artwork is inspiring. It lead to lots of conversations about art, painting, creativity and uniqueness between creators.
I loved that Carmon coupled abstract pages and backgrounds with more concrete imagery as well. It opens up the opportunity for creativity and imagination when reading and also for the children to be able to use the illustrations to "read the story" themselves. This is one we will keep on reading!
Thanks to Celebrate Lit Bloggers for providing me a copy of the book. All opinions expressed here are my own.
My eight-year-old son loved this book. He and I are both visual, creative people, and we both loved the richness of the colors and the illustrations! He also loved all of the animals. His favorite part, he said, was the second page, when God said, “Let there be light!” He said the colors reminded him of Heaven's gold. I personally wasn't quite happy about a few liberties that were taken in the imagination of the creation. For instance, on the very first page, it says that “colors swirled... as He [God] danced through the soft blackness.” Colors aren't present in darkness. It's the properties of light that make colors we can see. So this wasn't scientifically true. Also, did leaves fall before the Fall? We associate the falling of leaves with the decaying of trees every autumn, but there would have been no death or decay before the Fall. Even if the leaves swirling in the wind weren't from decaying trees, would they still have fallen off the trees the first day they were created with the appearance of age, still with fruits on them? It seems a little unrealistic. But my son didn't catch those inconsistencies and was very pleased with the book. He definitely wants to keep it and read it again.
When God Made Color is a beautiful Imaginative picture interpretation of Creation. With beautiful imaginative images and bright colors the Author, Sheri Carmon, gives the story of each day of Creation on a set or group of pages. My youngest son who is 4 wants to look at the book over and over again. I loved that each of had a different favorite page. The pictures were are produced in a way that encouraged my children that they could draw like the book, they did not discourage them that their pictures were perfect like they are in many books.
If you want a strict biblical interpretation you will need to make up a few of the words in the book to read to your children.. Scripture is not followed or quoted word for word. One example of this is the ending of the book, on the sixth day instead of Adam and Eve children are shown.. My Children have a firm biblical foundation and understand that Adam and Eve were the first humans, they are okay with skipping ahead to many other children who were made by God.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. This in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
When God Made Color is one of the most beautiful picture books about colors ever! The illustrations draw you in to the creation story on another level.
Everything is so vibrant that you can’t help but get excited. You might start reading in almost a whisper, but I highly doubt that you could keep it soft.
The colors leap off the page and everything is alive. When God Made Color goes right through the creation week in living color.
I may just have a vivid imagination, but I can hear a soundtrack playing in my head as I read this story. Full of rich tones and awesome crescendos.
Maybe I am hearing Aslan’s creation song from the biblical allegories in The Magician’s Nephew while reading this book. It’s possible, because that’s how my brain is wired.
If you are looking for stories about colors, start here. I would recommend When God Made Color to everyone, of Any Age!
📌 I received a copy of the book from the author through Celebrate Lit. I chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.
The cover of When God Made Color (by Sheri Carmon, illustrated by Silver Bluebird Studios) captured me first, a veritable explosion of color. It is a treat for the eyes, both young and old. This is a world of which I immediately want to be a part. Also, I want to introduce any young child I know to this book. Describing the seven days of creation, this is a warm, almost whimsical look at a very special time. The enchanting pictures are Dr. Seuss-like in their colors, yet rich in imagery and depiction. I imagine reading through the book with a child, taking time to find each created thing or creature, almost like the children’s picture books where you search for many different objects or animals. Of course, the last page is the most poignant, teaching children an important truth. Well-worth your time and money. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Celebrate Lit. I am not required to leave a positive review and all opinions are my own.
When God Made Color is truly a book of colors and the vivid artwork creatively illustrates how God created the world and everything in it. His creation of day and night, the sun, moon, and stars, and all of the living creatures are shown in vivid detail. And then, as the story explains, 'It was time to make His most marvelous creation—His Children! …And what did God’s children look like? Yes, they were all different colors also.'
This is a picture book that would be a great way to teach your child about The Creation and it is also a wonderful way to stress that even though there are people with many different skin colors, they all are alike because they were all created by the same God.
I received a digital ARC of this book from WhiteSpark Publishing and Celebrate Lit and a favorable review was not required. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
Bold, bright and highly detailed illustrations compliment the vibrant text of When God Made Color, a look at Creation that is sure to inspire awe and wonder in your child. God didn’t just make the plants, and birds, and animals — He made them with a variety of color and shapes and purposes. He also made man in His image, also in an amazing array of color. The message that God’s world is beautiful and that a master designer was at work is deftly told in words that children ages 5-8 can easily understand. This book is good for honing reading skills or for family reading time.
Recommended.
Audience: kids ages 5-8.

This is a great book to help children understand the story of creation through reading and coloring. Each page has very nice visual pictures. Each page allows you to be creative. The illustrations are bright, eye-catching and fun. Each page has a 3D feel to it. The first couple page talked about how God said the colors remind him of Heaven's gold. My favorite part of the book are the animals. As an adult, this book was still a lot of fun. This is a truly beautiful book filled with so many beautiful pictures, words, and messages. I highly recommend this book. It would be great for Bible School.
"I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. This is no way influenced my review, all opinions expressed are my own. "
The author has designed a magnificent book showing God creating the world in full, vibrant color. It will delight children and their parents/ grandparents alike with the fabulous paintings of God’s creation. The initial verses of Psalm 19, which open the book, are perfect to emphasize the creation story and the incredible beauty He created. His most valuable creation is people – people of all appearances, sizes, and colors. This is a fabulous story that shows how God created each person, creature, plant, with total care, each with unique colors, sounds, beauty. I highly recommend this, especially for children whose parents want them to learn of God’s creation rather than simply the science of what is taught in schools.
When God Made Color is a children’s book about colors wrapped around the creation of the world. This was a beautifully illustrated book, which to me looked like water colors that takes the Genesis story and tells it for kids in a way I had not read before. I really liked this book and its creative take on colors, especially from the beginning. And certainly since God is the creator of everything, that includes colors as well, from all the colors of the rainbow to all the colors of the world and people. This is a nice book for teaching moments with kids.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
When God Made Color is delightfully written and exquisitely illustrated — true to its name, the colors throughout the story do not disappoint. This book is a wonderful way to introduce kids to the Biblical narrative of creation, from when God separated the light from the darkness to when he formed the creatures of the sea and the birds of the air. The story concludes with a timely message that God created all of his people in a multitude of colors, all beautiful in His sight. Each spread is visually stunning and the writing is every bit as vibrant and abundant. When God Made Color is a joy to read for kids and parents alike!
When God Made Color is a great story about how God created the world in vivid colors. He made flowers with brilliant colors that danced in the wind and stars that twinkled in the sky. It is a wonderful illustrated story for young children to help them understand how God created the Heaven and Earth. He made animals like butterflies that shined with flecks of colors and fish that swam in the sea with breathtaking arrays of color. I really enjoyed how this book will keep the attention of young children while they learn about colors and how God made them..
I received a copy of these two books from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
This would be a fun book for children to read. Especially with all the discription of the different colors. Each page is full of vibrant colors and pictures. When the story started, I felt like it followed the creation story until the end. However, the story ended with God making Children. Not Adam and Eve. It would be a little confusing for children. The message is good. That God made the world and everything in it. He loves you ver much.
I received this book from the publisher to read and give my honest review. All thoughts are my own.
This is an amazing book. I love how it tells the story of creation, and when we get to day 6 when God made man - it shows how God made the different colors. Especially in today's age where others are hated for the color of their skin, this is a great way to show children diversity. I love how the author reminds us that while we are different, we are made in God's image. This book is beautifully illustrated, has a beautiful message. Both of my boys (5 and 7) enjoyed this book.
I received a copy of this book through Celebrate Lit Blogging program, all thoughts are my own.
When God Made Color relates the Creation story in a bright, bold way. The lovely illustrations in this delightful picture book come to life with glowing colors. Although the text doesn’t stick exactly to the Genesis account, it follows the days of Creation and shows brilliantly painted scenes for various portions of the days’ works God brought forth. The final spread shows a multitude of children rather than the first couple. This would make a nice addition to any home or library. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
What a wonderful colorful book. Describing all the color of everything that God made. The flowers, ocean, stars, fish, birds, butterflies, and all the other animals.
The book has a lot of colors to catch the attention of young children, even babies. Then as they get older a great book to read to them and for them to read. The ending brought tears to my eyes. I believe any parent would know what I mean.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the publisher through Celebrate Lit. I was not required to write an positive review. This is my own opinion.
When God Made Color is overflowing with full-page illustrations to display all of the wonderful colors in God's creation. The illustrations were fun but I wasn't comfortable with the fact that it was written in a way that added to Genesis instead of being it's own story to support it. Instead of mentioning Adam and Eve at all, it simply ends with God creating children of all colors. While I liked that kids would relate to it, I don't agree with leaving Adam and Eve out Creation.

Do you crave color? Well, let me tell you I could stare at the vivid and mottled watercolor-like images in When God Made Color for a good while. They would be fun calendar images! This book has a strong Christian message and covers the first part of Genisis.
My copy is via Celebrate Lit. This review contains my opinions and thoughts about this book.
When God Made Colors told the creation account from a new perspective, which, along with the striking illustrations, made it very appealing to children and adults.
I received an Arc of this book from the publisher, WhiteSpark Publishing, through Celebrate Lit, for review purposes. The thoughts expressed here are my own.
This book is a clever way to teach the Creation story to children. The illustrations are bright and inviting and the author did an amazing job of drawing me into the story. This too will be a book that I will enjoy reading to my students.
I received a complementary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
Sheri Carmon's debut picture book WHEN GOD MADE COLOR hits all the right notes: vivid imagery, gentle prose, and a theme that resonates within the heart. It is a book to be enjoyed by all ages, from the youngest of children to their grandparents and great-grandparents. Prepare to be delighted.
When God Made Color takes the Creation Story from the Bible and infuses it with all the colors of the rainbow. The illustrations in this book are one of my favorite parts. Again, if you have children in your life, this book needs to become part of your collection.
