I truly enjoyed reading it and I couldn't put this novel down!

I read almost 600 pages in five days and I still can’t believe how I did it! The only thing I know was that I couldn’t put this book down! “On Loving” is not only a love story, but also a learning guide to how to discover yourself as a person through what you explore in this novel. “On Loving” is a story of an accomplished young woman who experiences love in different forms. She has good looks, a good family and almost everything we m

On Loving is an engaging, informative, and an overall un-put-downable read. We follow Dr. Rose Hemmings around the world as she meets people and faces challenges that change her life forever. She is introduced as an adopted child of loving and ambitious parents that have sheltered her from a past full of trife. We meet Dean Taylor- a James Marden-esque fellow with troubled eyes and an even more troubled soul. We accompany them on a trip to Iran, where a host of rich and endearing people, traditio ...more

On Loving is a novel by Lili Naghdi that is everything its title insinuates. The book, in its entirety, is “on loving.” The book follows the story of Dr. Rose Hemmings, an adopted immigrant from Iran, as she navigates international borders, the meaning of family, and the discovery of love. All three seem to crash together at the same time for Rose. Fate has a way of smacking you upside the head when least expected, and Rose’s fight with fate is no exception.
The story begins with a pretty inter

To experience love and being loved by someone isn’t as common as you think, why do you think that is? Unfortunately, many people won’t ever get the chance to experience two loves, let alone one. The feeling of giving your all to another person who isn’t an immediate extension of yourself is such a rare blessing, you can only appreciate the ability to strongly feel. Can it affect you any less if you never had an opportunity to experience the power of love? If you happen to be amongst the “lucky o ...more

I believe this book is one of the fastest paced books I've ever read. I just wanted to know what other different twist the next page would be offering. This story was intriguing to me and I really liked the plot and the world the author built. The whole"Love" concept was very well written. I don't usually read Romance, but this one was so much different from any other one I've ever read in many different ways. "On Loving" is written beyond the boundaries of a Romance in my opinion. It teaches yo ...more

ou are in for a whirlwind of a good time with this book. Dr. Rose Hemmings discovers an entirely different life and history when she travels back to Iran, where she was born, after the death of her adoptive father. There, she finds out that she is an heiress, which is leaps and bounds ahead of where she was in America. Even though she just finished school, and is now a doctor, she is alone. All she wants is a family to love her. Luckily, in Iran, she finds just that. Her family in Iran is loving ...more

I teach literature and poetry in college and I read this book based on the recommendation of a colleague of mine who's been teaching comparative literature for the past 25 years. She told me that after many years she finally read a Romance with a real backbone that she learnt a lot from! The book certainly offers much more intrigue than the title suggests, and has more philosophical and scientific base into it than many other works written in this genre. I liked the style of writing and apprecia ...more

I read “On Loving” with great interest. I loved this book and I found it very refreshing and different. Although this book is a romance novel and beautifully capturing Rose’s triangle love story through her life, it also is a narrative of human emotion, love, loss, trauma, adoption, abuse and how these events affects human mental health. Still, Naghdi picture how having love, support and hope can build resilience and survival. Naghdi tells these stories in a refreshing way, while bringing scient ...more

On Loving is an epic novel by Lili Naghdi. The author clearly draws much inspiration from her own life and experiences growing up in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran as well as her work as a doctor. Writing what she knows serves her well in this beautiful and often painful life story saga. This story is a first-person narrative that spans over decades. Rose Hemmings-Bakhtiari is the adoptive daughter of Dr. William Hemmings. She is a doctor as well as a gifted writer and lover of literature. Her ...more

“On Loving” is an intensely romantic story focusing on the undeniable power of true love across time and cultures. The story is full of interesting facts to enhance your knowledge without making you bored and I loved the fact that it was written by a female physician. It is not what we encounter a lot these days. “On Loving” is very easy to read, but it touches the reader and captivates her in a profound way. Traveling to Iran and knowing more about Iranian people was also a lovely bonus.I highl ...more

3/20/1972, Manhattan, NY. Uncle Frankie’s bar. Dr. Rose “Rosie” Hemmings (Iranian, narrator, general surgery residency), & Dr. Jenny “Jen” Robins (niece) met for dinner.
Uncle Frank Robins got the 2 something to eat/drink.
The entrance door swung open & Jeff was yelling you bastard I’m going to kill you.
Dean Taylor (30+) was standing by Rose.
BANG! He had been shot.

Dean survived & the 2 Dr.’s left Uncle Frankie to babysit.
Later Dr. Hemmings took him to see Dr. Jefferson (psychiatrist, Rose’s BMF

I would give this novel all the stars in the sky if I could!

After finishing this book few hours ago, I can solemnly say that on the face of things, "On Loving" wears the guise of a romance novel and a love triangle, but that's only this book's outward guise. There is much more into this story. I really enjoy reading great sweeping stories that make the reader more than just a bystander watching the action, but a sort of participant. This book gave me the sense that I was actually in the scenes w

Loved it from the beginning to the end!

I just finished this beautiful story today and then turned on the TV to witness the burning of Notre Dame cathedral in flames which made me feel devastated. While reading this amazing story, I've been taken to New York, Iran, Florida, Hawaii, Paris and experienced the livelihood of each of these places described astoundingly by the author. The story gave me the real sense of being in Paris and the quotes from Hugo, Hemingway, Rousseau and others used perfec

I should say that words cannot describe how I felt when reading this book.
Love, passion, compassion, loss, friendship, culture, literature, reason, etc. all are gathered beautifully in this interesting novel. You can find the trace of almost everything you can experience, feel and endure as a human being, man or woman, in this story.

On Loving by Lili Naghdi is definitely a must read novel. It is an easy read and hard book to put down once you start.
The main character Rose Hemmings is dealt with emotional and physical challenges through her life’s journey. The novel illustrates the many facets of love between the three main characters that are embroiled in an unsettling love triangle and her quest to discover more about her birth family and country, Iran.

It's sad as well as beautiful. No matter what happens, nothing will stop true love to have its magical effects in people's lives. "Unconditional love", isn't that what everyone deserves? Can you fall in love more than once? In Lili Naghdi's On Loving, this historical romance will take you to a faraway time in a turbulent period of our history.

This story is about Dr. Rose Hemmings, who was adopted by an American family and born from an Iranian couple. It all starts as an older Rose talks to her granddaughter Amanda about her life and loves in her life as a vascular surgeon, a mother and wife, and how she had fallen in love with two people. In her story, she tells us about how she

Lili Naghdi’s romance novel, On Loving, is a recipe for success. Set in the 1970s in new York, it is not only the steaming romantic love triangle that it is, but also a lamentation on the greater power of love and being loved, involving love in a deeper, familial form as well as a romantic one. This is not just a story but an intercontinental saga of a young woman’s life and love, as the boundaries it pushes.

Really enjoyed this book, loved the characters and the interactions between them. Not a typical romance, but a very well-done character development. I liked the style of writing and mixing quotations from different writers I love and respect myself. It was great to be reminded about Austen, Balzac and many others in this book. I always worry that our newer generation may not remember and respect them the way these legends deserve. I've cried while reading certain parts of the story and I'm still ...more

Such a great book. I could hardly put it down. When I got near the end, I read very slowly because I didn't want the story to end.
There was many poems I enjoyed and learned many interesting points ofinterest about the country and culture of the Persian people. Lovely people.

Such a successful writing for the first of many I hope.

Best wishes Lili,

An epic book entangled with beautiful poetry and literature
The journey of Rose is worth accompanying but it's a long one. The book needs and deserves a lot of time investment and thoughts processing.
Not only Naghdi's writing style but her characters are lovable too. The way she wrote the character of Rose is a result of sharp skill.
