Plenty of citations and written by some of the best historians on Sparta. Very undergrad friendly.

A fantastic insight into Sparta, with contributions from numerous authors. The text covers aspects pertaining to politics, society and the military, from Sparta's rise to its eventual demise.

Хороший сборник статей, объединивший в себе работы известных специалистов по истории классической Спарты. Статьи в сборнике представлены самые разные. Есть действительно отличные работы по политическому устройству Спарты, общественному, илотам и внешней политике. Любопытные материалы по коррупции и падению Спарты в борьбе с Фивами.

К минусам я бы отнес тот факт, что некоторые статьи больше напоминают отписки. Вся их суть сводится к тому, что нужно искать более подробные публикации автора.
Ну и еще стоит отметить, что мало внимания уделено спартанской армии и вообще военной составляющей. А вот женщинами Спарты посвятили одну из самых больших статей сборника. Да еще и от Пола Картледжа. Не самое рациональное использование столь ценных ресурсов.

Наиболее обстоятельной и полезной статьей сборника я бы назвал "Social Order and the Conflict of Values in Classical Sparta" от Стивена Ходкинсона.

Итог?

Работа хорошая. Если интересуетесь Спартой, то рекомендую.
