Enjoyed this follow up to Silent Storm! It’s fun to see some of the early engagements in the war and John’s development as a leader. Blue team working together is always a treat, and this book did a nice job of highlighting each character (Fred’s sense of humor, Linda’s hunter-killer attitude, Kelly’s speed and wit, and John’s commitment to the mission and his team). I thought the castoffs were an interesting add to the story, and sets up a potential follow-up contact after they are rescued and returned to an insurrectionist planet. John, being as stoic as he is, stuck to his promise that if they helped him he would help them get transport to a planet of their choosing.
I think the spider runner EMP shooting things made by the castoffs were odd, but worked for the story. I liked the covenant point of view as well, and showed how susceptible to civil war the covenant was even in the early stages of the war. Nizat and Tam also set us up for a follow up, with the locator beacon and personal shield beacon planted with the ONI team and their ship piloted by Weyodosee still having the receivers to track them. The Silent Shadow conflict against Nizat and his crew was interesting, and made it an entertaining read. The irony was Nizat believed so deeply in his plan to track ONI and destroy the Spartans that he was willing to be killed or marooned for it, which the latter happened being the decision of less honor.
Plot notes below for reference, and am hoping for some kind of follow up.
Plot notes: Halo Oblivion
2526 - Blue team is on an outer rim planet helping defend a mine. The local militia is exhausted and somewhat reckless, not listening to John’s tactical advice for the advancing covenant and wraiths. They are overwhelmed by drones and wraiths, and blue team is extracted by prowler night watch with Petrov. They are reassigned to a downed covenant ship, likely a trap, to recover covenant technology. Nizat (shipmaster who lost the fleet and supply ring in the first novel) faces the prophets, and proposes destroying ONI instead of massing a huge fleet that may be defeated with ONI’s research and tactics. Nizat proposes uses luminary beacons to track the Spartans and ONI. The prophets refuse, and while be escorted out, Nizat kills honor guards and rallies his loyalists to his cause to kill the Spartans and ONI.
Blue team deploys to Netherop with Blue Force (some regular marines) and Petrov. Petrov uses some sacrificial pelicans, and they encounter resistance immediately. The Night Watch prowler is downed in the middle of a desert, and Petrov links the self destruct to herself as they march in the desert. They get to a safe enough distance, blow the prowler, and Petrov has the Spartans go forward themselves as the rest of the force could never keep up.
Spartans come across ambush from spider machines and kids. The kids explain they were born on Netherop and ancestors were marooned there for punishment, highly illegal by UNSC standards. The kids are unfamiliar with terms like years or infirmary, suggesting they are not very advanced at all, but they survived in caves with water. They have a brief skirmish, then agree to help each other. Linda notices other spiders heading towards the downed covenant ship.
Nizat arrives at Netherop. The pursuing fleet comes as well, putting Nizat between them and the human fleet. Nizat decides to do an assault on the human column on the surface, and deploy himself and another elite in drop pods to meet the Spartans in the downed ship. Blue Team retreats to help defend the human group. The children “Castoffs” are still hesitant and John tries to convince them he’ll help get them off planet.
Kelly stays with the castoffs Lena, Arne, and one other. She has then help her take down a covenant dropship of troops coming in while John, Linda, and Fred respond to a distress call about covenant approaching the downed ONI ship. It flips to Nizats view as his team approaches the ship, and they pursue the retreating humans while suffering losses. Nizat has an elite ranger team that gets sniped, and him and Lakosee split the luminary items to plant with the hopes that someone from ONI will take it back to their base.
Blue team encounters more castoffs fighting covenant, and makes a deal with the castoffs that if they help them recover the covenant ship, they will get them a ship in return and transportation off planet.
Kelly meets up with ONI crew and Petrov to give them transportation. Linda continues to pursue crew of ship. John and Fred reach downed covenant ship, but it takes off, and they return to ONI ship to meet 10 banshees and take them down with air support from UNSC. Nizat and Tam proceed with their plan, and put a beacon in a human transponder thinking they would be more likely to take it. Have one elite with a shield beacon be a sacrifice. Nizat sees Spartans as salvation from the Silent Shadow pursuing them.
Linda puts up the cave defense against Nizat and Tam’s plan. This was a very fun part of the book to read. Multiple kills from Linda, moving positions, dealing with the elements, trying to coordinate the marines and scientists with two warthogs and the castoffs. They fend off the attackers, find the mysterious “extra” locator with the beacon planted, and Linda works with a scientist to recover the personal energy shield which is the second beacon. Fun fight while Linda tries to hail blue team to no success.
Blue team meets up with Linda and the survivors. They determine the covenant got what they are looking for, as it is extremely strange for them to withdraw. They thought maybe they were after disarming the nuke code for the Night Watch. Roselle tells Petrov there is plenty of space in the crawlers if they remove the coal storages, which strikes Linda as odd as Roselle isn’t that kind. They decide extract from the Wheatley may be the best option. Blue team also decides to deny the covenant whatever they got and split up to pursue them back to Lucky Break (or Steadfast Strike by the covenant naming).
Blue team and some marines engage Silent Shadow dropship, while Nizat and Tam stay in hiding. They run in the crossfire to the Steadfast Strike, and the ship is obliterated by plasma torpedos and knocks everyone back. Blue team and marines retreat to pelican extraction, and Nizat and Tam are marooned without honor after lying to honor guards about the beacon receivers being destroyed, although they are aboard one of their surviving ships with elite Weyodosee.
Petrov is left stranded, supposedly by volunteer, to make room for the dead elite with energy shield tech and castoffs. Master Chief is interrogated on his deal with the castoffs, and confirms he promised them passage to a planet of their choice, which Roselle chooses Gao, and insurrection planet. Master chief honors his agreement. The book ends with Nizat and Tam wondering if the gods forsake them as they stalk Petrov by a fire.
