The Glass Slipper Chronicles #1

The Nobleman's Governess Bride

Jane Eyre meets Prince Charming in two enchanting Regency love stories! Previously published as "Much Ado About Nuptials" and The Baron’s Governess Bride . In the novella “The Viscount Meets His Match” Sebastian Viscount Benedict knows from bitter experience that marrying a woman of lower rank and fortune brings nothing but heartache. He is determined to prevent his beloved brother from making the same mistake by wedding the local squire’s daughter. Rebecca Beaton disagrees. She is certain her former pupil, Hermione, truly loves the viscount’s brother and will make him a devoted wife. She tries to persuade formidable Lord Benedict to give the young couple his blessing. In spite of their many differences, Sebastian finds himself drawn to forthright, loyal Rebecca. Yet he fears his admiration for the lady could erode his good judgment and resolve. Rebecca fights her growing attraction to Sebastian, which threatens to divide her loyalties…and perhaps break her heart. If only she can help him believe in true love, there may be hope for more than one happy ending! In the novel The Baron’s Governess Bride, Rupert Lord Steadwell is determined to hire the dowdiest, most unmarriageable woman he can find to care for his motherless daughters. The girls were heartbroken when their last governess eloped and Rupert does not want to risk a repetition. In her drab clothes, frumpy cap and spectacles, Grace Ellerby look like the ideal person for the job. Rupert has no idea that clever, caring Miss Ellerby is a beauty in disguise. Alarmed by unwanted advances from men in her previous positions, Grace is desperate to hide her dangerously attractive appearance and her growing feelings for her new employer. But when Lord Steadwell appears in danger of making a loveless marriage and saddling his daughters with a dreaded stepmother, Grace must risk everything to prevent it. Will a midnight kiss at a masked ball lead to scandal and ruin or might two wary hearts find their happily ever after at last?

This book was a combination of first a novella and then a novel. It is part of a series that revolves around a group of friends. This group of friends met when they were sent away to a boarding school for orphaned children of Parsons. The school is very reminiscent of Jane Eyre's boarding school, except in this group of books, a small group of young ladies become friends and help protect and stand up for each other. Now, even though I'm mentioning the boarding school, we only get little glimpses of it throughout these two books. Enough to know the circumstances and conditions of the girls' lives there and their friendships. I would suggest reading these in order as they build on each other and continue to involve the heroine from the previous book in it. Each friend is off trying to survive and make a living for themselves by being Governesses. A lonely life for sure and not always an easy one. I appreciated that the author showed that and the struggle a governess would have had with being stuck between the children and the parents who would probably play off of each other and the governess would bear the brunt of everything with no connection or friendship, always being left off by themselves. Very lonely life for sure.

~The Viscount Meets His Match~

This is the novella the begins the Glass Slipper Chronicles. Rebecca is the governess, and has practically raised her young charge to adulthood(19). She is happy that the young girl has found a match and will be loved and well cared for. The book begins with a misunderstanding of identity and spirals off from there. Sebastian is the Viscount and he has returned to his country estate where his brother resides to stop his newest found love and recent engagement. He will not allow his brother to make a match that isn't all that it should be. He hopes to gain the help of the governess, that together they can join forces to thwart this union before it is too late and both parties are forever miserable. What ensues is a battle of wills and wits. Who will prevail? Sebastian? Rebecca? Or the young couple who are desperately in love? I felt like this was very similar to Pride and Prejudice in many aspects of the story and the two main characters. It was a fun diversion and read. There were a few moments where I wasn't too keen on Sebastian's character. He's not always the most positive of kindest of people but I will say he does redeem himself in my book by the end.

~The Nobleman's Governess Bride~

Grace is in desperate need for a new position. She needs this interview to go well. She can't take any chances and risk anything. She has had to flee too many prior positions due to her looks and not only that but all her life she has been humiliated, shunned, mistreated and sought after by the wrong sort of gentleman because of her beauty. She quickly disguises herself and alters her appearance to seem plain and homely. A perfect disguise so that Lord Rupert won't be opposed to hiring her. All goes according to plan until she finds out he is a widower. He thinks she is perfect because her looks won't tempt any local men to run away and marry another of his governesses. Win/Win for both of them...kind of.

I liked Lord Rupert and his daughters. He was a good caring father who loved his daughters very much and wanted what was best for them. He taught them to respect their governess and to not judge on appearances. So sets up our foundation for this story. Disguises, heartaches, unrequited love, friendship, betrothals, childhood escapades, hidden secrets and much more...even Cinderella, throughout this story.

Grace was sweet and very protective of her young charges but also very protective of her secret and true looks. I enjoyed reading about how she connected with each of Lord Rupert's three daughters and truly cared for them.

When Lord Rupert announces his intentions to court the widow neighbor, his daughters are very distraught and hatch a plan to stop him from doing so. It may involve a very beautiful old dress, a mask and a ball...and a very revealing conversation. Will Grace be able to keep her true appearance hidden and protect her young charges from an evil stepmother? Or will her identity be revealed and everything falls apart, all the hard earned trust and love?

I will admit that I liked the novella well enough, but then when it came time to read the novel I was struggling to get past the first couple paragraphs. This was a review book for me and so I wanted to fairly read it and review it but I was just struggling. I even paused and started reading some novellas from a different collection in between because I just wasn't feeling the desire to read this one. But I took a deep breath and took the plunge. Ok, why did I wait? It was definitely one of those moments. I was hooked and didn't want to set it down after starting. There are a couple parts that make it a little bit long but overall I enjoyed it and loved the moments between Grace and Rupert. Especially the harvest festival. Happy Sigh!!!!

Content: Clean. Some very mild religious talk, nothing preachy, just a couple characters mentioning that God was directing their way a handful of times.

I received a copy from ebooks. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I like nothing more than to read a book where a bitter man turn soft and finds love and joy and happiness in life and can then see it in others. This is one of those books. Rebecca is a proper woman and companion to Hermione. Hermione is engaged to Sebastian's brother while he was away. Now that he is back he is determined to separate the two. He believes the girl only wants him for his money and that she does not care for him. Her laughing and giggles irritates Sebastian terribly.

But Sebastian also finds himself attracted to Rebecca and she to him. Too bad that can never be either. Now as they talk and Rebecca tries hard to get him to bless their upcoming union, they find themselves more and more comfortable with each other and then things become awkward and get harder and everyone becomes sad. And you just have to read how they all solve the dilemma and how does she convince him of their match!!

If you like stories of social injustice, finding that perfect someone for you who compliments you, walks in the garden, games, then this might be for you!

THE NOBLEMAN’S GOVERNESS BRIDE by Deborah Hale is an enchanting duology of two Christian romances from THE GLASS SLIPPER CHRONICLES series. This series features several girls who became acquainted when they attended a school for daughters of deceased clergy. The school was a horrible place to grow up, and now these friends are out on their own. In this book, two of them become governesses and meet the loves of their lives while taking care of children for wealthy families.

I love these types of stories that feature friends made in an orphanage type of setting. Each young lady has a story to tell and obstacles to overcome. As adults, they’re tied to one another through their horrible experiences at the school, but also by being thrust into society without each other’s support. This makes their reunion extra special when it happens, so I hope we see more of that as the series continues.

Both books were published previously for the Love Inspired Line with Harlequin Books S.A. in an altered version in the Glass Slipper Brides series. This book is the author’s reissue with a new cover.

THE VISCOUNT MEETS HIS MATCH

The first novella is the shorter of the two stories. I recall my Kindle logging around thirty-five percent of the book when I started the second story. THE VISCOUNT MEETS HIS MATCH begins in The Cotswolds, England, in 1814.

When Rebecca Beaton is mistaken as her charge, Hermione, by the young lady’s fiancé’s brother, she doesn’t deny or confirm who she is. Sebastian Stanhope, Viscount Benedict, tries to reason with Rebecca, but he doesn’t give her a chance to say one word. He rambles on with his assumption, hoping to get her to withdraw from his brother’s proposal, while Rebecca sees nothing but humor in the situation. Later, she realizes she should have been more honest with him, but the man was just so sure of himself.

Sebastian’s brother, Claude, is furious when he finds out what transpired, not realizing at first that his brother spoke to the wrong woman. Once he figures it out, he sees the humor in the situation as well. Sebastian is fully irritated at the woman who bested him and is prepared to take her to task for it. Nineteen-year-old Hermione is offended that the man could mistake her older governess as her, but Rebecca explains that Sebastian isn’t paying attention to details. He just wants one thing. To remove his brother’s fiancée from their future.

The mistaken identity sets the stage while entertaining the reader. Although Sebastian takes himself quite seriously, it’s obvious that Rebecca will not. Claude and Hermione are determined to wed. Sebastian thinks he will have an ally in Rebecca. They all spend more time together without the results becoming what Sebastian imagines. But that’s okay, because he gets exactly what he didn’t know he wanted or needed.

A very fun story, THE VISCOUNT MEETS HIS MATCH gifts us with a dual romance of two brothers who fall for a lady and her governess. I especially enjoyed Rebecca and Sebastian’s story, based loosely on CINDERELLA, because they’re an older couple and more relatable to me. I could easily picture their conversations, and their friendship came before love. It made me particularly happy that Rebecca and Hermione wouldn’t be separated because they fell in love with brothers.

THE BARON’S GOVERNESS BRIDE

This second story is much longer, closer to a full-size novel, so the plot and content are more developed to match the length. It begins in Berkshire, England, in 1815, with Grace Ellerby on the way to meet her potential employer.

It’s not a normal situation. Grace has never heard of a governess sitting for an interview prior to today, but she needs the position, so she’s willing to do something outside of normal. Assuming she’s meeting a married man, Grace is surprised to learn that Lord Steadwell is a widower with three young daughters in need of guidance. Grace is also hiding from her past, keeping her beauty secret by wearing a bonnet and her father’s spectacles.

Lord Steadwell prefers a plain governess since their last one eloped with a man from town. Grace has fled her last three positions because of unwanted attentions from men. She intends to hide her beauty to avoid uninvited interest, something she has always had to worry about. Lord Steadwell and Grace will both get what they want, if Grace’s disguise stays in place. Of course, the three young girls challenge Grace and her cover. Lord Steadwell can’t help but be impressed with his governess when she handles his daughters with love. Will she break down the wall of sorrow he has built around his heart?

This is a slow-moving romance with a lot of time spent with Grace and the three girls. They’re adorable and experiencing problems expected after losing their mother and their previous governess. Grace doesn’t have an easy time of it, but she’s experienced and determined. Her kindness is eventually reciprocated when the girls love her as much as she loves them.

Rupert has grieved the loss of his dear wife for three years. He knows he should find a mother for his girls and feels a governess is the best place to start. Realizing his widowed neighbor has a son and needs of her own, Rupert begins to court her. But his daughters don’t approve and beg Grace to intervene. Grace has spent some time with Rupert and has begun to have feelings for him. Can she put them aside to be the best governess, or will fate intercede?

THE BARON’S GOVERNESS BRIDE is a beautiful rendition of CINDERELLA. I love a retelling of this fairy tale, and Deborah Hale adds just the right twists to make the story fully her own. There was a point when fears seemed to be rehashed too much and I wanted to rush to the end. But the sneaky author wasn’t quite done with her characters yet. I agree with the time taken in the end because it made this couple’s union more believable. A bonus to this novel is reuniting with Rebecca and Sebastian from THE VISCOUNT MEETS HIS MATCH contained in the same package.

Conclusion…

Deborah Hale is one of my favorite authors for several reasons. I like how she uses my preferred tropes and twists them. Her tightly-woven stories keep me riveted, even without a lot of action. The characters’ dialogue is often clever with a reason to be there, complementing the scene. I can just relax, knowing I’m guaranteed a fun journey to a well-deserved happy-ever-after. I’m not left wishing for more or less description, or wondering who is talking to whom, because her dialogue tagging is seamless, often including an action so I can envision the story as it happens in my mind. I’ve always been fascinated by her methods, so I keep coming back for more.

Even though Regency is not one of my favorite styles of historical romance, I’ve had this series on my wish-list for some time. Because I never worry about time periods when I read a Deborah Hale novel – I just read them because she wrote them. This time, she adds in some lovely, soft inspirational edges to her characters’ beliefs without being overdone. Two tales with heart, faith, and love introduce what promises to be an enjoyable series. If you enjoy a chaste romance where friendship begins a forever love, you’ll love THE NOBLEMAN’S GOVERNESS BRIDE, getting two tales for less than the price of one.

I vacillated on the rating for this book. It is actually two stories in one. The first story is a novella, "The Viscount Meets His Match". For me that was a three star story. I didn't feel connected to the characters and they didn't seem to be well developed. I think that is is the story that will somehow connect all of the other stories together in "The Glass Slipper Chronicles."

"The Nobleman's Governess Bride" is the four star story. Because it is full length, I let it determine the rating for this review.

Grace is a governess. She attended a school for orphaned daughters of the clergy, where she met her friends that will be the main characters of the books in the chronicles. She is beautiful, but it has been a detriment for her. Men think that is who and what she is, a beautiful face. She wants to be known for the person behind the face. The loving, honorable, and caring woman she has become in spite of her obstacles.

The book has three adorable daughters. Grace's characters shines in how she relates to the girls. She persuades them through gentleness and love to accept her as their governess. She also uses the same technique to motivate reluctant students.

If you love a regency romance with a Cinderella feel to it, this would be a great book for you to read. It contains Christian themes and kissing.

This was a collection of two Regency romances; I was only expecting one so that was a fun surprise!

The first story was about a Viscount who is convinced his brother is making a mistake by marrying the young Hermione. So he seeks the help of Rebecca, Hermione's former governess (now companion) to help him stop the match. Cute story with really likable characters.

The Baron's Governess Bride is about Grace, whose beauty has gotten her unwanted attention in previous jobs. She disguises her beauty and gets the job as the governess for Lord Steadwall's two young daughters. The daughters are not excited to have a new governess, but she wins them over.

These are part of a series, and I would definitely be interested in reading other books in the series. Both of these could easily be read as a standalone.

2 old-fashioned Regency stories, with some
spiritual elements (which didn't overwhelm).

5 girls met at a charity school and became forever
friends. The school provided insufficient heat (not
enough blankets), meager food, shaming staff.
This book included the romance of friend #1 &
then friend#2.

(1) The Viscount Meets His Match.
Sebastion tried to force his brother Claude to call off
his engagement to Hermione. Who Seb preceived
as a flighty fortune-hunter. Seb fought his attraction
to Hermione's companion. Story touched on love
& forgiveness.

(2) The Baron's Governess Bride.
Guarded, beautiful Grace made herself dowdy to dis-
courage unwanted male attn. She began as a governess
to widowed baron Rupert's 3 dtrs. Rupert preferred a
dowdy governess, who wouldn't elope, like the last one
did. He was a read-deal honorable man, just what
Grace needed. I felt the tension, trust and love building.

Okay

The first short novella in this book fell a little short to me, it was lacking just a little, but the overall storyline/characters were absolutely fabulous. Now, in the second novella, the characters continue through a circle of friends. This new storyline was different then I was used to and that made it unique. Very well done.

I enjoyed these two stories! I love the Regency setting, and the characters and plots kept me interested and looking forward to how the happy ending would play out. The first story was shorter, but the personalities of Sebastian and Rebecca were both strong and vibrant. Even though she disagreed with his motives, Rebecca looked below the surface and began to understand Sebastian in a way nobody else did. Her compassion for him while also holding firm to her own opinions repeatedly took him off guard and an unlikely friendship developed, which of course blossoms into love. It was fun to read their sparring and banter, and see them bring out unseen sides in each other.

The second story was about two thirds of the book, and delved a bit deeper into the relationships between Grace and the new family she is serving. I loved the distinct personalities of the three girls she is teaching and caring for, and the perspective of their father Rupert was interesting. Grace has a lot of pressure on her to be the right governess for the children and the father, and I loved that he supported her authority and listened to her concerns. The journey of winning over the hearts of the daughters and the father naturally takes place over a longer period of time, and I felt like it made the story more realistic. Plenty of emotion and angst in this one ;)

When I began reading this book, I did not realize I would get two stories in one. What a delight they both were.

In The Viscount Meets His Match, the two main characters, Sebastian and Rebecca, cannot agree when it comes to Sebastian’s brother’s wedding. Little do they realize that their disagreement brings them closer together. When Sebastian overcomes his fear of heartache they find a beautiful experience together. Both characters are charming and fun. I enjoyed their banter back and forth.

In The Baron’s Governess Bride, Grace Ellerby is determined to not be beautiful and catch the eye of her employer. She has had some bad experiences in the past and does not want to deal with it again. Rupert Steadwell finds Grace exactly what he is looking for. Someone who will not distract him with beauty. Everything goes fine until one midnight ball kiss. I could not stop smiling at Grace. She tried so hard to be old and ugly and Rupert never saw through her. She is kind and loving. I just wanted so hard for Rupert to figure it out! He is warm and loving.

A cute read that I highly recommend.

THE NOBLEMAN'S GOVERNESS BRIDE is a compilation of two stories that were previously published under Harlequin's Love Inspired Historical line. In both stories the gentleman ends up falling for a woman far below his station. Overall, both stories contain a sweet romance with some difficulties between the couples coming together.

I really liked both stories in parts and then felt neutral about other parts. I think that there needed to be more development and for actions to feel consistent with the characters. I wanted the plot and flow of the story to feel more natural. I still enjoyed both of these, but neither evoked a lot of emotion.

In the end, was it what I wished for? These were light, sweet, and quick reads.

This book is made up of 2 novellas, all by the same author. I was surprised to find that this was so. All the novellas I have been reading lately, have been made up of 3 books by different authors. I have never seen this kind of book put together before. Each book is actually decently long and does wrap things up as a regular book. I liked that. Sometimes novellas can leave the reader empty.
Deboarah Hale has created a group of ladies who went to school together. This book covers the stories of Rebecca and Grace. There are still Evangeline, Leah, and Hannah.

The Viscount Meets His Match:

The Cotswolds, England, 1814. Rebecca Beaton is a young woman who makes a living as a governess. She has been the exclusive governess for Hermoine Leonard for many, many years and considers Rose Grange her home. Hermoine is now a young woman and is engaged to Claude Stanhope. Claude's brother is Sebastian Stanhope or Viscount Benedict. He is known for his stubbornness and meanness around society.
Sabastian comes to Rose Grange unannounced and finds Rebecca in the garden. He confuses her for Hermoine and tells Rebecca about how she cannot marry his brother. He doesn't mince his words. Eventually, Sabastian realizes his mistake but by then, he is intrigued by Rebecca and asks to spend time with her.

I liked this story. Rebecca is an easy going sort of person who gets along with almost anyone. I had a problem with them as a couple because class and station are so embedded into Victorian England that their relationship seemed unlikely. This story did, although, have similarities with Jane Eyre. The author includes a lot on repentance and forgiveness. For those that are not religious, the characters are. I didn't care for the inclusion of Rebecca's family. It seemed disingenuous with their sudden change of heart. There is an epilogue.

The Baron's Governess Bride

Berksire, England, 1815. Grace Ellerby has had several positions as a governess. She has struggled to find long term positions because her male employers try to seduce her or ruin her. She has become fearful and skiddish around men. Grace learns about a position in Reading where she agrees to meet a single father, Lord Rupert Steadwell,at Reading's George Inn. Grace decides to wear a disguise. There the two discuss his daughters, Charlottes, Phoebe and Sophie. They live on his family home called Nethercross. Lord Steadwell recently lost his French governess when she eloped with a neighboring boy.
Rupert gets the idea to pursue a local society lady who is a widow and has one son. He doesn't love her an he isn't attracted to her but he feels strongly that his daughters need a lady. Meanwhile, the girls have become attached to Miss. Ellerby. They didn't take to her at first but she won them over with her singing voice and kindness. The girls find out Miss Ellbey's secret and convince her to go to the costume ball. There she meets with Lord Steadwell and he is intrigued with her.

I liked this story more than the first. Miss Ellerby struggles with her beauty, which is kinda silly now days but then women had little rights and say over their lives. I can see her having issues with men. This story, too, has a running trend of faith, hope, and forgiveness. It seems a bit like Cinderella. I enjoyed how the author took her time in telling the story.

Overall, I enjoyed this book but the second book was better than the first. Their relationship was more believable to me. I liked how the author chose to tell this story. I would recommend this book. I am interested in reading about the other ladies.

Surprise! Two stories! It is like Cinderella, Emma and Jane Eyre have a book baby and we end up with The Glass Slipper Chronicles Series. Orphaned, poor and bossy self possessed governesses falling for their forbidden employers in a very deserving rags to riches setting. Like you, I'm a sucker for this mysterious titled gentleman stuff. And Deborah Hale, I would argue, does an inspiring job! I can't wait for the next in the series.

The one thing that may put you off this book is that the men in the story aren't at first likable (these men are a bit too realistic). Its a, "Really? That guy?!" kind of read and you may be tempted to put the book down - BUT DON'T! KEEP READING! They get better and it is totally worth it. The evolution of this multi-layered duo of characters keeps you discovering and relating. And for me it leaves me inspired. It even makes me ponder giving people in my life a deeper look to the beauty I at first don't see.

I'm a sucker for historical romances featuring a person of low or difficult circumstances connecting with someone wealthy, powerful, and/or titled, so I'm naturally inclined to enjoy this pair of stories about a governess marrying nobility. In addition, the stories are solidly plotted, well-paced, and well-written. As others have noted, the tone, a few plot points, and the heat level, are reminiscent of Pride and Prejudice and Jayne Eyre, though these stories have a stronger critique of the limited options available to women at the time, and incorporate more political context. Some reviewers have called these Christian romances, I suspect because of their lack of sexual content and the occasional expressed faith of some characters, but there's nothing here to offend anyone who avoids overtly religious material. There are three more books in this series, and I am looking forward to reading them.

This is my first exposure to Deborah Hale’s work, and I was impressed with this Regency period story. When I downloaded “The Nobleman’s Governess Bride” I found it to be a Novella paired with “The Baron’s Governess Bride," a Novel, which I will review separately. The four-book series chronicles the stories of five separate Governesses, two of which are told in “The Glass Slipper Chronicles #1. All five Governesses attended school together and have maintained contact over the years. Although tied together, each story works well as a stand-alone offering. This novella, “The Nobleman’s Governess Bride, is the story of Rebecca Beaton and Sebastian Stanhope, Viscount Benedict. Ms. Hale has a captivating writing style that keeps the reader well involved in the story from beginning to end. The few very obvious mistakes that a novice editor should easily have discovered were not significant distractions. Christian themes were present, but not dominant throughout the story; however, the story was squeaky clean. For those seeking sneak peeks into the storyline, I recommend reading other reviewers. However, I heartily endorse Deborah Hale as an author of Regency Romance that is well worth reading.

Il y a par moment de la mièvrerie mais dans l'ensemble les deux histoires (qui font partie de la même série) sont agréables et intéressante. J'ai quand même un petit faible pour la seconde histoire qui me semble plus aboutie que la première.

Full Review at: What's Beyond Forks?

The Nobleman's Governess Bride is the first book in The Glass Slipper Chronicles series by Deborah Hale. It's actually two stories in one, which was a nice little surprise.

The first story, The Viscount Meets His Match, is a novella about Rebecca and Sebastian. Sebastian is as stubborn as they come, and it causes some pretty funny moments. Rebecca gives him a run for his money in the stubborn department. These two begin an unlikely friendship that grows, and it was so fun to watch it grow.

The next story revolves around one of Rebecca's childhood friends, Grace. Rupert is stubborn like Sebastian, but he also has blinders on when it comes to certain things. These two have a friendship that grows slowly, and it does so in the smallest and most meaningful ways. They were funny and lovely to read about, and I completely fell for Rupert's daughters.

It seems the series might be moving through this group of governess friends who have known each other since childhood. They are like family even though they don't see each other near enough if at all anymore. I'm looking forward to more in this series.

The ARC of The Nobleman's Governess Bride by Deborah Hale was kindly provided to me by I am a Reader for review. The opinions are my own.

One of the things I love when reading books I requested to review, is being constantly surprised. Like most times, when I started reading this book I completely forgot what made me request it and what it was supposed to be about.
Apparently this is the first book in a series that follows the stories of five childhood friends. All met when they were sent away to a school for orphaned girls and all grew up to be governesses.
I was even more surprised to find out this one holds two stories instead of one- one novella and one novel! I couldn’t be more happy that I decided to pick this one out. The stories are just sweet and compelling. The writing is absolutely inviting and I couldn’t help but be sucked into the English countryside. I couldn’t tear myself away and found myself thinking about the story during every moment I wasn’t able to continue reading.
These are exactly the kind of stories that I love and I can’t wait to continue on and discover what happens next.

The Viscount Meets His Match
5/5 stars
In this novella we follow Rebacca Beaton, now a companion to Hermione Leonard- her former charge as a governess, as she meets Viscount Sebastian Stanhope under a case of mistaken identity.
Sebastian is sure he found Miss Leonard as he actually stumbles across Rebecca. In his haste to make his opinions known, he leaves Rebecca almost no opportunity to correct him as he asks her not to marry his brother Cloude, Hermione’s fiancée. In an attempt to shield her friend from such unkind requests Rebecca promises not to marry Claude and leaves Sebastian surprised and content in his perceived success.
After this initial encounter we keep following Sebastian’s attempts to persuade Rebecca to help him dismantle the match, while Rebecca tries her best to convince him that his past experiences don’t have to repeat themselves when it comes to his brother.
What they both are not prepared for, is the sudden connection each of them begins to feel towards the other.
It is a wonderful story about prejudice, forgiveness and love. I could not help but feel the strong conflicting feelings both Rebecca and Sebastian felt towards each other and their loved ones. I was definitely glued to this short novella and desperately wish to read more about Rebecca and Sebastian and Hermione and Cloude.

The Baron’s Governess Bride
5/5 stars
The accompanying novel is following one of Rebecca’s good friends from school- Grace Ellerby. Grace was always beautiful, but she never got to experience anything good to come out of her beauty. She was only ever criticized for it by other women and harassed by higher ranking men who wanted to have their way with her. Because of that she decided to hide her looks and transform herself into a plain and boring maid that won’t attract any man’s fancy.
Lord Steadwell is searching for exactly what Grace is trying to become- a plain unattractive governess. One with no chances of finding a husband that will take her away from caring for his daughters, like their last one did and broke their hearts even more than it already was after their mother’s death.
Both Grace and Lord Steadwell are exactly what the other one seeks, but both are keeping secrets from those closest to them and therefore are risking their chances at happiness.
This was a wonderful tale of love, fears, second chances and happiness. A true Cinderella story that will never get old!
Absolutely fantastic and highly recommended:)

I would like to thank Kathy from “I am a Reader” for providing me with the opportunity to read and review this wonderful book.

This book includes the prequel as well as the novel.
This is my first time reading from this author. I have enjoyed this book mostly. Looking thru her other books, this series seems to be clean (kissing only and no sex or steamy scenes) compare to some of her other work. I most likely will stick to this series and nothing else she has written if I continue to read more of her work.

The prequel: "The Viscount meets his Match"
It was a short story about Sebastian, who is determine to end his brother's engagement especially after his terrible experience with his late wife who was of lower rank and fortune. He fears his brother is falling for the same trap that he did. He goes to his brother's fiancee's home to see that she reason to ending the engagement and mistaken Rebecca as Hermione. Rebecca is a former governess but now companion to Hermione. As she learns of Sebastian's distaste of the relationship, she more determine to have him see reason that his brother and Hermione truly love each other. As the fight their case, they slowly grow to love each other instead.

I would give the prequel about 3 star rating. It was cute and sweet. The theme in this story is about learning to forgive. Both Sebastian and Rebecca have people in their past that have wounded them deeply. As they interact with each other, they learn how much they need that forgiveness to being healing. The ending was really sweet and good way to introduce the characters of the rest of the series.

The novel: "The Nobleman's Governess Bride"

Lord Steadwell is looking to hire the most unmarriageable governess for his three motherless children especially after his last one left eloped leaving his daughters heartbroken. Grace disguises herself in a drab clothing, frumpy cap and spectacles as goes to be interviewed for the position. Grace uses this disguised to hide her beauty as there were trouble in her last few positions involving unwanted attention from men and jealously from women. The job sounds like a dream to her until she learns that Lord Steadwell is a widower. She still accepts the job but determine to keep her disguise in check and not to have growing feelings for her new employer.
When Lord Steadwell is determine to remarried out of duty than out of the love, Grace willing to risk everything to prevent such a match especially when his daughters oppose it as well.

This is a sweet story. Grace is an orphan. Her mother has died when she was young and her father remarried to a women who was happy to get rid of her when her father (a pasture) died. She was sent to a school for orphan girls like herself, which is where she met Rebecca and their other friends. She knows the cruelty of a step-mother and don't wish the same thing to happen to the girls she is teaching. I love the relationship she builds with each of the daughters. The goodness she finds in Lord Steadwell. While this story gives the Cinderella feel, the woman Lord Steadwell is set to court isn't cruel or uses underhanded tricks to get to him. She is a widow herself with one son. Yes, she pursued Lord Steadwell, but she was respectful? not vain? I guess I was expecting her to give more of a fight but it never happened. I do like in this story that Lord Steadwell falls in love with Grace and not just for her beauty as many only saw her beauty.

It was good. Again, I was expecting more conflict ... but it was still a good clean story.

This was an interesting book, with two stories in it. The first, I found a bit dry, but I liked the second much better.
"The Viscount Meets His Match": Reminiscent of a Beauty-and-the-Beast retelling, at least in terms of the personality of the viscount, this novella was fairly interesting, with a nice plot. However, I didn't click with it. I'd give it the two-star rating of "it was OK" since it didn't pull me in or make me incredibly eager to read it, despite the fact that the plot was interesting. Rebecca was a strong heroine, and the Viscount Benedict a bitter and hurting hero, but I found them lacking in that they didn't have much chemistry. Their interactions and arguments just didn't...mesh with me. They didn't make me laugh or hope they'd work out. I always think of two star ratings as negative (despite logically knowing that on goodreads, it means the book was "ok"), but this book would probably earn just that from me--it was OK, but I didn't love it.

The Baron's Governess Bride: This novella, I liked much better, and is the main reason I'd recommend this book in its entirety! I'd give it four stars. This Cinderella-esque novel was entertaining, and I was rooting for Grace all the way. Grace, a girl who has been pursued in her previous jobs due to her beauty, hides her appearance when applying for a job as a governess with Lord Steadwell. Steadwell, looking for a woman who won't leave the family to marry, is searching for a governess with as little beauty as possible, and so hires Grace. The adventure commences as Grace worms her way into his affections (and that of two of his daughters) with her gentleness and wit. Eventually, Grace's charges try to use Grace to keep their father from marrying, which leads to a masquerade, misunderstandings, and a satisfying ending. Such a fun read!
Grace: Steady, loyal, gentle, loving, and clever. She is a charming heroine, one who comes across as justified in her fears.
Lord Steadwell: Steady, intelligent, blunt, and hard-headed, Lord Steadwell is an engaging hero and hard to dislike even when he would seem to deserve it.
I'd recommend this 2-in-1 package primarily for the second story, though plenty of people seem to have enjoyed the first. While I use the term "novella" both stories are more the equivalent of a short book.

The Viscount Meets His Match
As a viscount, Sebastian knows the importance of making a good match. Unfortunately, he also knows the hazards of making a bad match, and he's certain his younger brother is about to wed the wrong woman. Determined to dissuade his brother and his fiancee, Hermione, from continuing their relationship, he tries to enlist Hermione's governess-turned-companion in his plan to separate the two. Rebecca disagrees that it's a bad match, and as she and Sebastian try to convince change one another's minds about the match, they are drawn to each other. Sebastian has no intention of marrying, and Rebecca knows she has nothing to offer a viscount, but she can't help but hope that he will soften his heart.

This was an engaging story. I love seeing a hard-hearted man soften up and find love, and I loved ending and seeing how things played out.

The Baron's Governess Bride
Grace Ellerby's looks have been a curse all her life, attracting unwanted attention that has cost her more than one governess position. As she looks for a new position, she disguises herself, coming across as dowdy and unattractive--which makes her an excellent choice for widower Lord Steadwell's new governess. After losing his last governess when she eloped, Rupert wants someone who will stick around until his daughters are grown. Grace doesn't enjoy hiding the truth, but she comes to care for Lord Steadwell's daughters--and Lord Steadwell. When he determines it's time to remarry--but leaves love out of the equation-his daughters persuade Grace that she needs to try to change his mind.

This was a fun story. I loved Rupert's daughters! They were so perfectly written. They helped keep a familiar story line (rich widower falls for poor governess) fresh and interesting.

These were both enjoyable stories! I'd never read anything by Deborah Hale before but I definitely will be checking out the upcoming books in this series! I recommend this book for those who like clean, Regency romances.

My review is 4.5 Stars

I am grateful to IAmAReader.com for giving me a copy of this book. The fact I received this book for free does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Forgiveness is the overarching theme of these two lovely novels, combined in one book, The Nobleman's Governess Bride.

In The Viscount Meets His Match, Rebecca and Sebastian meet when he mistakes her for her charge and accuses her of being unsuitable for his brother.  I enjoyed the way they spent time together in an attempt to sway the other to their reasoning about the match.

I really liked the way that Rebecca was willing to confront the powerful viscount about his attitude and need to forgive, using Scripture to do so.  And her willingness later to take a clear look at herself to see her shortcomings as well.

The Baron's Governess Bride was an interesting view of the life of a beautiful yet poor woman in Regency England, and the difficulties she encountered because of that.  Grace not only had to learn of forgiveness (as did Rupert), but also to learn about trust.

Rupert's daughters was so sweet and I enjoyed reading about the lessons both in and out of the nursery that Grace taught them.  I think my favorite part of the book was the intimate, yet innocent meeting Grace and Rupert had at the ball and the scene on the bridge as he was so bold to place his hand next to hers so their fingers touched.

Both stories were delightful and well-written.

Two very sweet Regency romances.

The Viscount Meets his Match is what I would cal a long short story or a short novella. It introduces the first of five orphans who are forced to become governesses. Rebecca Beaton’s mother came from a well off family but they disowned her when she married a poor clergyman. Upon their deaths she was packed off to a school for the orphans of the clergy. Upon graduating she found employment as a governess and then companion to a wealthy squire’s daughter. Then her charge fell in love with the local Viscount’s brother. Unfortunately, Sebastian, Viscount Benedict doesn’t approve and does all in his power to end the relationship. How will Rebecca change his mind?
The Baron’s Governess Bride is a novella. This features the beauty of the five friends, Grace Ellerby. Unfortunately, Grace has experienced the unwanted attentions of too many men in the households in which she has been employed and has now gone to great lengths to make herself look plain. A plain governess is exactly what Rupert, Lord Steadwell, is looking for since the last governess eloped with a young man from the neighbourhood. He wants someone who will stay with his three girls until the last one’s come out. He has also decided that he will never love again and will, therefore, make a marriage of convenience. The children don’t want a ‘wicked’ stepmother and ask Grace to intervene. The Cinderella story is raised quite often before all comes right.
Both of these romances are based on Christian values and do not contain any heated romance.

With themes of forgiveness and trust, these are more than simple, light reading.

In The Viscount Meets His Match, Sebastien is plagued by what he sees as a flaw in himself and he's determined to help his brother avoid the same mistake. What he doesn't realize is that his lack of forgiveness is hurting more than himself. When Rebecca finds herself in the middle of conflict, she does what she can to help resolve it, even if it means confronting Lord Benedict.

What follows is a fun, yet thought provoking story that I wished were longer. 4 stars

In the Baron's Governess Bride, Lord Steadwell refuses to trust another woman with his heart. But, he feels he must marry again to produce an heir. His solution? A loveless marriage.

Miss Ellerby doesn't trust men. She sees her beauty as a curse and something to hide because the men she's encountered want to take advantage of her. So, when she applies for her next governess position, she decides to go in disguise. Unfortunately, the master of the house proves to be different from every other man and as she learns of his plans for a loveless marriage, she feels compelled to intervene.

This story is much more developed, the characters more three dimensional, and the romance more believable. Anther theme in the story is the value of character over appearance and not judging someone based on appearance. 5 stars.

Romance - PG - kissing only

Overall rating - 5 stars

This is a sweet collection of two clean Regency romances. Make sure you start reading with that in mind, because if not, you'll end up like me, and become distracted by the progress of the story verses the percentage completed (#ebookproblems). I couldn’t figure how it could only be 25% finished when it appeared that things were wrapping up. This isn't a problem most people will probably have-I avoid reading book descriptions just before I start reading them so not too much is given away.

Once I realized there would be two stories in the ebook, I was able to fully enjoy it. The first story, The Viscount Meets His Match, was fairly short (a novella?), but had a good message about forgiveness.

The second story, The Baron Meets His Match, was quite enjoyable. I wondered how long Grace was going to keep up with her disguise once she was hired, and it went on much longer than I expected. The strain alone caused by using her father's glasses would have made me want to give up the charade right off.

Grace and Rupert were very likable characters, and their story was fun to read.

While the main characters in the first book are included (briefly) in the second story, these stories would be fine to read on their own.

I can see myself reading more of Deborah Hale's stories.

2 sweet, clean historical romances with a governess trope.

The Viscount Meets His Match
As the companion and chaperone to her former pupil, Rebecca finds herself defending Hermione to her charge's fiance's brother who disapproves of the match due to the differences in their rank and fortune. A quick rapport builds between the two as each tries to convince the other.

The Baron’s Governess Bride
Out to hire the most unattractive governess for his 3 motherless girls after they were devastated when their pretty French governess left to get married; Rupert, Lord Steadwell hires Grace not realizing that her seemingly unattractive mean is a disguise. With spectacles, a frumpy cap hiding her lovely hair and shapeless, colourless clothing, Grace hopes to hides her natural beauty, being forced to flee her previous positions after being importuned by one or another (so called) gentleman in the houses where she's worked.

How Grace wins over her 3 young charges makes a nice storyline. The children probably stole the story - each having very different characters and personalities.

Both stories were quick, light reads.

This collection of two stories was delightful. In the first, the Viscount Meets His Match, Rebecca is a companion, former governess to the Viscount’s brother’s fiancé, Hermione Leonard. Having suffered a foolish marriage as a young man that ended in frustration and heartache, Lord Benedict was determined to stop his brother from making the same mistake. He was determined to make his brother see the error of his ways by breaking off the engagement. He tried to enlist Rebecca to stop the couple from making an error but Rebecca was totally loyal to her young friend, Hermione and stood up for her. In the Barons Governess Bride, Grace Ellenby has been a governess for 10 years but she is such a beauty that at each of her places of employment, some rude man has made inappropriate advances toward her, causing her to flee for her virtues sake. Determined that this will never happen again, she applies for a job as governess in a far way county using as disguise so that no one will see her beauty. The characters in both stories were wonderful and the plots moved quickly. I will look for more books by this author.
