Ellis is none too thrilled when her mother volunteers to take in a foster child for the summer and then leaves the responsibility of caring for 10-year-old Lilac to Ellis herself. Initially resenting Lilac, who is very defensive about her background, Ellis comes to understand her harsh life and even manages to win her friendship.
Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads database with this name.
This is not the Shark Tank celebrity, but an author of children's books. The books are mostly realistic fiction about older children and teens who come from families that are dysfunctional or at least face interesting challenges.
Also used the pseudonym Paige Dixon and Gail Hamilton.
In this book the main character, Ellis, is off for summer vacation and has it all planned out. However, her mother volunteers to bring an unprivileged child, Lilac, into their home and has Ellis spend all of her time with her. Ellis doesn't like Lilac and is frustrated with the whole situation. She drags Lilac around with her and tries to entertain her anyway she can. This book is a well written and I would recommend it for someone in grade/middle school.
