دو فصل اول کتاب (تا صفحه‌ی صد) از این می‌گوید که فیلم‌بین‌های حرفه‌ای، گاها عاشق صحنه‌هایی می‌شوند که از نظر زیبایی‌شناسی یا روایت، اصلا نقطه‌ی کلیدی‌ای در فیلم نیستند و کارگردان ناآگاهانه این صحنه‌ها را به‌وجود آورده؛ صحنه‌های اضافی. در نتیجه سینه‌فیل‌ها ارزیابی غیرآکادمیکی (به معنای تئوری‌های رایج سینما) از فیلم‌ها دارند، که به ادعای نویسنده، به این ارزش‌گذاری باید ارج نهاده شود.

I have such mixed feelings about this entire book. On one hand, I appreciate Keathley's broad impetus: to rescue cinema studies scholars from their own hypocrisy, to suggest that the faux-cinephobic "rigorous skepticism" of High Theory ought to be replaced with an academically-minded subjectivity. This is potentially freeing, and potentially helpful.
