Back when the Revolutionary war was first starting, and George Washington was just starting out his career as the general a secret plot was hatched to assassinate George Washington. At this time spies were not common and counter-intelligence was almost non-existence. The secret service was just starting out but they were known as Life Guards they were soldiers who’s main duty was to protect General Washington from harm. This was in interesting read. This book does an excellent job of laying out the background information of all of the key players of this conspiracy. At first I didn’t get why some of the information was important until it all came together towards the end. But, this books is more than just conspiracy. It tells the story of the birth of counterintelligence in a fledgling country during a most crucial time.

This information/history book reads like a spy novel! The authors built suspense through cross-cutting scenes and pressing the pace of the chapters. Although I was confident Washington would survive the plot, it was engaging to watch it unfold. But for a few chance encounters it all may have gone very differently.

This would be good for ambitious middle grade history lovers or YA readers.

Intelligence, cunning, and secrecy makes this well-researched investigation into plots to kill George Washington a fast paced interesting read. 1776 saw Washington wading through terrible weathers and unsanitary condition beside his army all while some used their place in the hierarchy to plot his death. Extensive notes and selected bibliography will satisfy readers quest for additional details.

Very interesting history of espionage and the need and development of our earliest intelligence agencies.

It was a bit of a choppy read, going back and forth in time and locations and characters. But all in all the history makes it well worth the read.

The First Conspiracy is a thrilling ride through history for readers of all ages. I have read the adults version of this book and really enjoyed it. This re telling is a great way to get our youngsters excited about American history. My eight year old especially enjoyed this.

I like this period of history and I learned some new things, but the book flip-flopped back and forth in time, was VERY slow, and I don't believe most young readers will enjoy reading it.
