After finishing this book I read some reviews and comments and came to realize that this is a trilogy and therefore there are no more Arlo books. I haven't told my kids yet. If I'm this heartbroken, I don't know how they are going to feel.
We have enjoyed these books immensely. I read them out loud to my (now) 13 and 14 year old kids, and for the first time in 2-3 years, we don't have another Arlo Finch book to look forward to. It's so sad.
I'm not going to compare these books to Harry Potter because other than the fact that they are about a boy and his friends, the books and styles are completely different. But not since HP have I enjoyed a set of YA books this much.
I hope Mr. August decides to keep writing about Arlo or starts another series/trilogy. I know he's probably busy in the movie business but please, don't leave us hanging! :)

Like other 3-star reviewers, I thought this third (and final?) installment of the Arlo Finch series was missing something that the earlier books had. Perhaps it was the lack of new imagination, which made the first two books better. After a slow start, Arlo, his sister and Wu one of his two best friends from the Blue Patrol travel through The Long Woods, via a pit stop for directions (one of the best parts of the book), to China to retrieve Arlo’s father, who is thought to be a traitor in the U.S. Meanwhile, Arlo's archenemy, Hadryn has escaped captivity. Hadryn is after Arlo to gain possession of a spirit knife and is willing to do anything to get it. While it is a happy reunion for the Finch family, the father has to hide, and the U.S. government suspects his return and tries to gain Arlo's trust.

Åh, det var en bittersød fornemmelse at læse tredje og sidste bind om Arlo Finch og hans venner i Blå Patrulje.
Det er en af de bedste børnebogs serier jeg har læst og jeg kommer i den grad til at savne Pine Mountain, De Lange Skove og alle mysterierne.
Den sidste bog hedder Arlo Finch i Skyggernes Rige og her får Arlo den (synes han selv) gode idé at samle familien igen, så han beslutter sig for at hente (=smugle😆) sin far hjem fra Kina.
I mellemtiden er den farlige Hadryn dog undsluppet sit fangenskab og er igen på jagt efter Arlo og så skal Blå Patrulje sige goddag til hele to nye medlemmer.
Den sidste bog var en skøn læseoplevelse, men for mig står den som den svageste af de tre. Måske er det fordi jeg ved, der ikke kommer mere Arlo eller måske var det fordi jeg savnede lidt mere om rangers og Blå Patrulje (selvom der var meget af dette i andet bind).
Arlo Finch bøgerne er fyldt med den skønneste stemning. Jeg elsker at de foregår i hver deres årstid - etteren om vinteren, toeren om sommeren og treeren om efteråret. Det har givet mig en ekstra fornemmelse af hygge, når jeg læste😊

I liked the first book. The second one was even better. Somehow this one fell flat for me. My problem wasn't with the writing itself, the author has a very engaging voice for these middle grade books. I had difficulty wrapping my head around the plot. Arlo sets of to find his father who fled to China after being accused of some sort of internet crime. It's never entirely clear if he's innocent or not, and Arlo acts without thinking of the consequences of bringing him home. Even a 13 year old should be able to understand the ramifications. Add to that the conflict between Hadryn and the Eldritch, which was clearly defined in book 2, this time took a confusing turn. The climactic moment, which should have been coming to a crescendo through 3 books was lackluster at best. Arlo's final act was a noble one, but not the payoff we deserved. Hopefully the author decides to continue with this story, as he did leave it somewhat open

Die ersten beiden Bände der Arlo Finch – Reihe haben mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen, daher habe ich dem Erscheinen von Teil 3 ganz sehnsüchtig entgegen gefiebert. Ein ganzes Jahr lang hieß es für mich ungeduldig hibbeln und warten. Diesen Sommer wurde ich schließlich endlich erlöst. Kurz nachdem mein Exemplar bei mir eintraf, habe ich es mir geschnappt und mich zusammen mit Arlo und seinen Freunden in ein neues aufregendes Abenteuer gestürzt.
Nach einem sehr ereignisreichen Sommer im Camp Rote Feder kehrt Arlo Finch zu seiner Familie nach Pine Mountain zurück. Anstatt sich aber nun auf den Schulwechsel zu konzentrieren, verfolgt der 13-jährige nur ein Ziel: Seinen Vater über die Long Woods und mit der Hilfe seiner Freunde aus China zurückzuholen. Als wäre dieses Unterfangen nicht schon schwierig und gefährlich genug, erfährt Arlo, dass sein Feind Hayden zurückkehrt ist und es auf ihn und seine Familie abgesehen hat. Ob es Arlo mithilfe seiner magischen Fähigkeiten wohl gelingen wird, seinem Rivalen das Handwerk zu legen?
Bei mir ist es nun sehr genau ein Jahr her, dass ich den zweiten Band gelesen habe. Da ich inzwischen leider wieder so einiges von der Handlung vergessen habe, habe ich mich anfangs ein kleines bisschen schwer damit getan, in den dritten Teil hineinzufinden. „Im Königreich der Schatten“ beginnt ohne Einleitung und baut sehr auf die Vorgänger auf. Bei der Arlo Finch-Serie sollte man daher unbedingt von Band 1 an aufwärts lesen. Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass man dem Geschehen problemlos folgen kann, wenn man die Bände nicht chronologisch liest.
Meine Einstiegsprobleme waren zum Glück aber sehr schnell überwunden. Nachdem ich einmal wieder den Durchblick hatte, wollte ich gar nicht mehr aufhören mit dem Lesen. Wie die zwei vorherigen Bände, so habe ich auch diesen Band so richtig weggesuchtet und in weniger als zwei Tagen durchgeschmökert.
In meinen Augen ist John August mit „Im Königreich der Schatten“ eine erneute wunderbare Fortsetzung geglückt, mit der er mir ein zauberhaftes Leseerlebnis beschert hat. Ich muss allerdings sagen, dass dieser Band für mich eindeutig der schwächste Teil der Reihe ist. Ich bin begeistert, das schon, aber für die volle Sternenzahl hat es mir leider nicht gereicht.
Da ich einen etwas größeren Kritikpunkt an das Buch habe, haue ich diesen jetzt einfach mal sofort raus. So weit ich weiß, handelt es sich bei „Im Königreich der Schatten“ um das Finale. Dafür, dass dies der Abschlussband ist, sind mir am Ende leider zu viele Fragen offengeblieben. Die eigentliche Story fand ich echt klasse, aber der Schluss hat mich irgendwie etwas unzufrieden zurückgelassen. Ich hoffe daher sehr, dass es vielleicht doch noch einen vierten Teil geben wird. Ich gehe zwar nicht davon aus, dass es noch ein weiteres Wiedersehen mit Arlo und Co. geben wird, aber wer weiß. Man soll schließlich niemals nie sagen. Ich jedenfalls würde irre gerne noch mehr Abenteuer in Pine Mountain erleben! :D
Bis auf das Ende hat mir das Buch aber wirklich total gut gefallen. Wie die ersten zwei Bände, so erzählt auch der dritte Teil eine super mitreißende Geschichte voller Magie, Spannung, Mysterien und Geheimnisse. Man ist immerzu am mitfiebern und herumrästeln, bibbert ohne Ende mit und da auch die ernsthaften und emotionalen Momente nicht zu kurz kommen, gibt es auch Szenen, die zum Nachdenken anregen und einen berühren.
Was mir wieder ganz besonders gut gefallen hat, ist das einzigartige Setting. Von den mysteriösen und magischen Orten hatte ich erneut die tollsten Bilder im Kopf. Die Fantasywelt Long Woods ist mir zwar bis zum Schluss ein kleines Rätsel geblieben, keine Ahnung, ein komplettes Bild konnte ich mir irgendwie nicht von ihr machen, aber verdammt cool finde ich sie dennoch. Ich liebe einfach diese schaurig-schöne Atmosphäre, die die Long Woods verströmen.
Die Beschreibungen der Schauplätze in der realen Welt waren aber auch wieder Kopfkino pur für mich. Echt schade, dass es sehr, sehr wahrscheinlich kein weiteres Abenteuer in Pine Mountain und den Long Woods geben wird. Diese geheimnisvolle und geniale Kulisse werde ich sehr vermissen.
Natürlich finde ich es aber auch sehr schade, dass ich mich mit diesem Band auch von den Charakteren verabschieden musste. Mit der Ausarbeitung der Figuren konnte mich John August abermals vollends überzeugen. Mein persönlicher Liebling ist nach wie vor unser Hauptprotagonist Arlo, aus dessen Sicht wir alles in der dritten Person erfahren. Arlo ist einfach ein absoluter Sympathieträger. Mit ihm hat John August einfach einen großartigen Buchhelden erschaffen, den man aufgrund seiner liebenswerten und mutigen Art sofort ins Herz schließen muss.
Arlos Freunde und seine Familie habe ich ebenfalls richtig liebgewonnen. Wir treffen in diesem Band auf lauter bekannte Gesichter wie Wu, Indra oder Arlos große Schwester Jaycee. Wir dürfen aber auch ein paar neue Personen kennenlernen. Mir haben alle Figuren wieder außerordentlich gut gefallen. Sie sind allesamt so schön verschieden und tragen mit ihren einzigartigen Eigenschaften dazu dabei, dass man wundervolle Lesestunden mit dem Buch verbringt.
Wovon ich euch zu guter Letzt unbedingt noch etwas vorschwärmen muss, ist die brillante Aufmachung des Buches. Sieht das Cover nicht umwerfend aus? Also mir gefällt es unglaublich gut. Ich liebe die Cover der Arlo Finch Bücher! In meinen Augen sind sie echte Hingucker.
Der Innenteil im dritten Band kann sich aber ebenfalls sehen lassen. Das Vorsatzpapier zeigt erneut diese traumhafte Illustration, in deren Genuss wir bereits in den beiden Vorgängern gekommen sind und auch während der Geschichte haben wir das große Vergnügen, zahlreiche schwarz-weiß Bilder von Helge Vogt betrachten zu bedürfen. Die ganzseitigen Zeichnungen sind einfach nur fantastisch, sag ich euch. Sie sind so herrlich düster und stimmungsvoll und stellenweise sogar etwas gruselig. Zu unheimlich sind sie natürlich nicht, keine Sorge, aber ein bisschen Gänsehaut bescheren sie einem zweifellos schon, was ich erneut einfach nur mega fand!
Fazit: Ein fesselndes Finale voller Spannung, Action und Magie! John August ist mit „Im Königreich der Schatten“ ein weiteres fabelhaftes Fantasy-Abenteuer gelungen, das einen von Anfang bis Ende in Atem hält. Mild spoiler at the end about my disgust with the ending! For me this third installment was a huge let down after amazing books one and two. Seemed rushed and not nearly as well thought out. I found myself spacing out and having to re listen to a lot of things as it was not nearly as engaging as the first installments.The ending was way less than satisfying. With a genius dad who is great and messing with quantum computers and such that work in the long woods, why not have him help the Eldritch get power without torturing spirits? Ugh.

I am sad this is the last book about Arlo Finch. I enjoyed spending time in his world. Thank you, John August, for a great story that kept me wanting to read more.

Arlo Finch ist für mich ein Überraschungshit und auch ein kleiner Geheimtipp, zumindest habe ich den Eindruck, dass die Reihe leider nicht so bekannt ist. Dabei ist es eine ganz tolle Abenteuer-Fantasy Trilogie für Leser ab 10 Jahren.
Und da kommen wir auch gleich zu meinem einzigen Manko an der Trilogie, nämlich dass es nur drei Teile gibt. Ich muss gestehen, ich dachte nach dem Lesen es würde noch weiter gehen. In meinen Augen ist da noch so viel Potenzial um die Reihe weiterzuführen, aber auch die noch offenen Fragen bzw. mehr Details zu verschiedenen Dingen könnte man noch gut in weiteren Büchern aufgreifen. So war ich dann echt etwas enttäuscht, weil es wirklich schon vorbei ist und manches etwas schwammig bleiben wird.
Aber davon abgesehen hat mir das Buch sehr großen Spaß gemacht. Nach ein paar Seiten war ich wieder voll in der Geschichte und habe mit großer Spannung Arlo und seine Freunde auf ihrem Abenteuer begleitet. Die ganze Reihe hat immer wieder eine düstere Atmosphäre, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Die Kinder sind bei den Rangers, was in Richtung Pfadfinder geht, doch spielen hier noch ein paar magische Komponenten mit.
So ist die Truppe oft draußen in der Natur, was an sich schon ein schönes Setting ist, sie können aber auch in einen, ich nenne es mal magischen Wald, die Long Woods eintauchen und was es dort so gibt, ist schon richtig cool. Das Ganze hat etwas schön mysteriöses. Was auch ganz klar zur Spannung beiträgt. Ich habe das Buch fast am Stück gelesen, John August schreibt richtig toll. Der Altersgruppe entsprechend locker, aber mit genug Details, sodass man sich als Leser alles gut vorstellen kann und sich in die Welt einfindet.
Die Dynamik zwischen den Freunden hat mir auch sehr gefallen, wie sie zusammen agieren und eine Einheit geworden sind. Solche Freunde und so einen Zusammenhalt wünscht sich wohl jeder. So war die ganze Arlo Finch Reihe auch eine gute Laune Reihe für mich, die einfach Spaß gemacht hat. Mit einer zuweilen düsteren und mysteriösen Atmosphäre. Und vielen spannenden Elementen. Noch dazu die sympathischen Charaktere. Was will man mehr?
Ich hoffe ja, dass es vielleicht doch noch irgendwann weiter geht. Aber auch so mochte ich die Reihe und den Abschlussband wirklich sehr gerne. Noch erwähnen muss ich die Illustrationen von Helge Vogt, die es immer mal wieder gibt und die vortrefflich zur Grundstimmung der Geschichte passen.
Und da kommen wir auch gleich zu meinem einzigen Manko an der Trilogie, nämlich dass es nur drei Teile gibt. Ich muss gestehen, ich dachte nach dem Lesen es würde noch weiter gehen. In meinen Augen ist da noch so viel Potenzial um die Reihe weiterzuführen, aber auch die noch offenen Fragen bzw. mehr Details zu verschiedenen Dingen könnte man noch gut in weiteren Büchern aufgreifen. So war ich dann echt etwas enttäuscht, weil es wirklich schon vorbei ist und manches etwas schwammig bleiben wird.
Aber davon abgesehen hat mir das Buch sehr großen Spaß gemacht. Nach ein paar Seiten war ich wieder voll in der Geschichte und habe mit großer Spannung Arlo und seine Freunde auf ihrem Abenteuer begleitet. Die ganze Reihe hat immer wieder eine düstere Atmosphäre, was mir sehr gut gefallen hat. Die Kinder sind bei den Rangers, was in Richtung Pfadfinder geht, doch spielen hier noch ein paar magische Komponenten mit.
So ist die Truppe oft draußen in der Natur, was an sich schon ein schönes Setting ist, sie können aber auch in einen, ich nenne es mal magischen Wald, die Long Woods eintauchen und was es dort so gibt, ist schon richtig cool. Das Ganze hat etwas schön mysteriöses. Was auch ganz klar zur Spannung beiträgt. Ich habe das Buch fast am Stück gelesen, John August schreibt richtig toll. Der Altersgruppe entsprechend locker, aber mit genug Details, sodass man sich als Leser alles gut vorstellen kann und sich in die Welt einfindet.
Die Dynamik zwischen den Freunden hat mir auch sehr gefallen, wie sie zusammen agieren und eine Einheit geworden sind. Solche Freunde und so einen Zusammenhalt wünscht sich wohl jeder. This book was great! If you've read the previous two books, it's a must-read, and if you haven't? What are you waiting for? Read the first two!
In the final book in the Arlo trilogy, our hero is going to rescue his father (with the help of his friends, of course). Unlike the previous two books, this finale is action packed with everything snowballing into awesome action scenes! I was very satisfied by the end of the book with how everything came together, however I did wish that the book had been longer so those epic plot points could have hit home even harder. That's seriously my only real complaint with the book, that I wish it had been longer.
I do have to say, Lake of the Moon was my favorite in the series because of how much the characters were allowed to develop over the course of the book. This one is my second favorite, if only because of all the amazing payoffs. Definitely recommend both this book and the entire series!

I’ve been a big fan since the first book in the series & one thing I’ve enjoyed is that I haven’t been able to anticipate & guess where the story is going - that sense of anticipation carried through in this final (?) book of the series. I did find some plot lines clunky - wondering if I had missed or forgotten something from the second book - this will be less of an issue for middle grade readers who are likely to binge through the series rather than read the books a year apart as I’ve had to.
Arlo Finch holds up for me as a solid mg adventure series with a good mix of real life problems & magical adventuring.

For the final book in a trilogy this one really struggled with a few issues like uneven pacing, weird transitional jumps between chapters, and a healthy dose of deus ex machina resolutions. We never learn all that much about the new members to the group, making them unnecessary additions (Wyatt especially felt like a token 'diverse' character because of this). Similarly I was disappointed with the final (lack of) confrontation with Hadryn and lack of resolution with Rielle. Very confusing and only ok in comparison to the other books.

Arlo Finch in the Kingdom of Shadows By John August 5 Stars
This is the final book in this trilogy and it was such a good ending. The end of this book in particular had such good closure. It wasn’t flashy, though. I can only think of a few books that really end their series like this. It hit me differently/was just generally different but it reminded me of The Bone Witch series by Rin Chupeco. Excellent closure of the series.
Through the books in this series Arlo Finch has been searching for the reason the supernatural world is so interested in him. In the Kingdom of Shadows he finally figures it out. To get to the answer he faces old enemies, learns more about the magic of the Long Wood, has several adventures and really questions what kind of person he is.
Each book in this series has a central theme. At least I think they have one. The first book could be easily about finding where you belong. The second book was undoubtedly about friendship. This book I think is about understanding yourself. Arlo is faced with some difficult moral dilemmas multiple times in this book. Each time he has to decide who he’s going to be. I was honestly surprised that John August had out these issues on a thirteen year old.
Arlo felt lucky to have friends he knew so well that he could let them debate an idea even when they weren’t around.
Arlo’s friendship with both Wu and Indra was so strong in this book. The last book had Arlo stuck between the two of them. However there’s a moment in his book where he realizes he’s known them both so well they can argue a problem with him without even being actually there. This was such an evolution for the boy who didn’t know if he’d have any friends.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better family.”
Another part of this book, and the series as a whole, is the Finch family. Arlo’s father was hiding in China after uncovering government secrets. His family was rather fractured when he moved to Pine Mountain. Whether it’s his mom, dad or even Jaycee his whole family supports and believes in him over and over again. I loved involved families in books and Arlo’s did not disappoint.
I also wanted to take a minute to talk about the inclusion of a transgender character in this book. They are most definitely a side character, but I really liked the way it was handled. There wasn’t a big deal about it. One of the new recruits to the Rangers,Wyatt, was born with a girl’s name before he transitioned. Then that was that.
I love this series so much and I’ll definitely be rereading it soon.

Dieses Buch ist ein in meinen Augen würdiger Abschluss der Reihe, und ich hatte wirklich viel Spaß daran, Arlo ein weiteres Mal auf seiner Reise zu begleiten.
Leider hatte ich das Gefühl, dass einige Dinge zu kurz kamen oder ein paar Fragen offen geblieben sind, von denen ich aber auch nicht unbedingt wüsste, wie oder wo man in dieses Buch noch Antworten hätte hineinschreiben sollen, abgesehen davon war es aber wieder wirklich super. Auch teils erstaunlich brutal, muss ich sagen, und auf einem in meinen Augen anderen Level als die ersten zwei Bände, aber mir persönlich hat's durchaus gefallen.
Auch gibt es zwar ein paar Dinge, die ich nicht unbedingt zufriedenstellend fand, wie sie am Ende ausgingen, aber gleichzeitig passe es alles wirklich gut in die Welt, also war es jetzt auch nichts, was mich wirklich gestört hat.
Und inhaltlich hatte ich wieder eine Menge Freude an allem. Es war toll, diesmal so viel mehr von den Long Woods zu sehen, und ich habe mich auch gefreut, wie sich die Figuren über die Zeit entwickelt haben, und dass man einen Unterschied zum ersten Buch so stark gemerkt hat. Auch finde ich es super, dass man zwar in allen Büchern merkt, dass Arlo etwas besonderes ist, aber er ist nie zu besonders, oder kann alles, oder braucht deshalb niemanden. Ich finde es wirklich erfrischend, zu lesen, wie jemand mit seinen Fähigkeiten trotzdem auch nur ein ganz normales Kind ist. Und auch die Nebenfiguren waren wieder toll. Generell waren die Charaktere wie so oft wirklich fantastisch (ein zwei Nebenfiguren/"Gegenspieler" gingen mir vielleicht auf die Nerven, aber den Rest fand ich echt stark), die Geschichte war spannend erzählt, und ich war auch sehr zufrieden mit dem Ausgang insgesamt und dem allerletzten Kapitel. Das fühlte sich alles echt ziemlich passend an. Es hätte zwar auch durchaus mehr sein können, oder ich hätte nichts dagegen, generell mehr Bücher der Reihe zu Gesicht zu bekommen, aber es passt auch so, wie es aufgehört hat.
Insgesamt eine wirklich schöne Buchreihe, die jetzt zum Ende teils überraschend düster wurde, auch wenn man damit vermutlich hätte rechnen können, insgesamt aber trotzdem sehr "leicht" geschrieben war, und einen mit seiner magischen Stimmung eher fröhlich als unglücklich zurücklässt, oder so habe ich es empfunden.

This was a fantastic conclusion to the Arlo Finch series! I reviewed the first book back in 2018, and I thought it was just a fantastic premise I'd not seen done in middle grade before and it was brilliantly executed. A year later I featured the sequel as a Holiday Pick and now I'm featuring the final book as a Summer Reading pick.
It's as hot as the cover implies.
Arlo goes on a hike, but as you know, nothing's normal about hiking through the Long Woods. In fact, Arlo's hoping to cross half the globe in one afternoon to bring his father home from Guangzhou, China. That's right, because the Long Woods have portals everywhere there's a forest or a large stand of trees, potentially.
But first, he takes his friends and fellow Patrol members, Indra and Wu, with him to meet up with Fox, who leads them to Fallpath, the City of Lost Things, so they can consult the Atlas for the location of the opening in Guangzhou.
Of course, the atlas is not what Arlo's expecting (I won't ruin what it is, or how they get to consult it), but still, it does get Arlo and his sister, Jaycee, to Guangzhou and they manage to smuggle their father out of China and back home -- without a passport, long plane ride, going through Customs, etc.
That's, of course, when the story really picks up. Because his father's a wanted fugitive, and it's an impossible-to-explain journey, and the Eldrich -- who want Arlo's spirit knife, which he's still got -- have eyes everywhere. Even within the FBI, apparently.
They want his dad for his computer hacking / programming skilz, and an agent pulls Arlo out of school to question him about whether he's seen his dad. But then he add, Arlo may be in danger -- from the homicidal sociopath, Hadryn. Who may be back, and out to get him.
I won't ruin the twists and turns from here. It's a fun read, one I didn't want to come to an end.
I predict it'll be a long time before another author can write a middle grade fantasy featuring scouting as well as John August did!

"Arlo Finch - Im Königreich der Schatten" - mit diesem dritten Band nimmt uns Arlo aller Voraussicht nach ein letztes Mal mit in die magische Welt der Long Woods, lässt uns Teil der Ranger sein und erlebt gemeinsam mit uns gefährliche, geheimnisvolle und magische Abenteuer.
Immer wieder konnten mich Arlo und seine Schwester Jaycee, genauso wie auch deren Freunde Wu und Indra mit unvorhergesehenen Ideen und den tollsten Plänen überraschen. So auch dieses Mal, denn die Geschwister wollen endlich ihren Vater, der aus Gründen auf der Flucht ist, wieder bei sich zu Hause wissen. Deshalb, wie sollte es auch anders sein, machen sie sich auf die Reise gen China und zwar durch die Long Woods. Für Arlo mittlerweile ein Leichtes. Doch nicht alles klappt wie erhofft und ein alter Rivale macht Arlo außerdem das Leben schwer. Dieses Mal muss er mehr denn je um sein Leben und um das seiner Liebsten bangen. Aber Arlo wäre ja nicht Arlo, wenn ihm auch dieses Mal nicht doch etwas einfallen würde.
Arlo und seine Freunde sind mir allesamt ans Herz gewachsen. Ich mag ihren Mut, ihre Zuversicht und auch ihren Zusammenhalt, den sie in diesem großartigen Finale der Trilogie noch einmal unter Beweis stellen können.
Wieder einmal wird man in ein Abenteuer entführt, bei dem man hautnah dabei ist. Man kann Arlos Empfindungen, seine Angst und Anspannung, aber auch seine Freude regelrecht spüren. Man wird von den Worten einfach mitgerissen und Seite um Seite fliegt nur so dahin. John August weiß, wie man seine Leser in den Bann zieht und hat es wieder einmal voll und ganz geschafft.
Jedoch hatte ich dieses Mal das Gefühl als wäre das Ende noch nicht gekommen, als wäre Arlos Geschichte noch nicht ganz aus erzählt. Ist es vielleicht nur Wunschdenken oder Intuition? As Arlo begins his 7th-grade year he learns that Hadryn has escaped and is hunting him. What does he have that Hadryn wants and what will Hadryn do to get it? Arlo is off on adventure right from the beginning as he travels through the Long Woods to rescue his dad and bring him back from China. But he doesn't think past that, and the problems all begin. His time is running out to save his family, Pine Mountain, and the Long Woods.

This is a great ending to a wonderful middle-grade fantasy/action/adventure series! I loved getting into Arlo's world, discovering everything that is hidden in our woods and forests.

¨Arlo Finch in the Kingdom of Shadows¨ is the third book in the Arlo Finch trilogy, written by John August. The book is following the point of view of Arlo Finch, Arlo, his best friends, Wu and Indra, and his older sister, Jaycee are on a mission to get Arlo and Jaycee´s father back from China. Through the Long Woods, which are unlike any other woods, can break time and space itself! As if the journey to China isn't hard enough, coming back through magical woods where everything wants to kill them, AND with a fugitive, is a whole other adventure. A big theme in the book is the ¨Spirit Knife¨ that Arlo acquired in the second book that the villain, Hadryn, wants. For example, when Hadryn endangers Arlo and his classmates by setting a school bus on fire! The character development in this story is immaculate. Jaycee Finch, Arlo´s older sister changed and her bond with Arlo grew as well. I loved this book and the others in the trilogy, I wish there were more Arlo Finch books!

I loved this book probably my favorite of all 3...it is explosive, fast paced, funny, warm, it is filled with emotions and adventure from the first page to the last... here’s why I give it only 4 as opposed to 5 stars (spoilers ahead). It leaves too many open questions and lose ends: the quantum device? what happens to the Eldridge? Do they just stay put and sad? Mr. Fox? Arlo becomes one with the spirit knife (what’s that all about)? The main question that puts a big dent on this otherwise marvelous trilogy.... WHY ARLO? Why him?
Not sure if JA is thinking of furthering this, I hope he closed the loop on the endless open questions and lose ends... there were a few from the first book, let’s see how things unfold.
Great book. Totally recommended for young kids and not so young folks like me.

August has written a very satisfying conclusion to the Arlo Finch trilogy. Readers should read the books in order as #3 starts out with a bang and will be confusing to those starting here. Arlo Finch lives with his mother, sister, and uncle in a remote area in the mountains of Colorado. His father is hiding from the government in China. Arlo and his sister set out through the magical Long Woods to rescue their father and bring him to Colorado but then everyone from the FBI, to the mysterious Eldritch of the Realm beyond the Long Woods, to the sociopathic former Ranger Scout Hadryn seem to want something from Arlo. Middle school aged kids will be clamoring to finish reading the trilogy.

So wonderful! Loved this completion of the best fantasy series I've read in awhile. I'm so sad it is over. I hope the author will come back with another spin off series. Arlo now has so much more power and understanding of the Long Woods. And the Eldricht are literally left in the dark. This is a world that begs to be explored further. What will become of Rielle? Is she mad at Arlo for ruining her paradise? Why did the dragon spirit need both of them? What discovery did his father unlock? What was happening when the device was uploading in the Long Woods? I'd also love a look into the rise to power of the Eldricht. Why was Arlo so important compared to the other toobles? There are so many unanswered questions that I can only hope that John August will continue the journey for all the fans.

This time he means to navigate his way through the Long Woods to China, where his father is in exile. Will he succeed in bringing his father home? And what happens then? And why are the Eldritch still after him?
I cannot say enough good things about this trilogy. Smart, based in a believable reality, with real-life consequences and well-sketched-out characters, it is a fantastic read for young adults and grown-ups alike. Although I am sad to see the trilogy come to an end, this most satisfying conclusion leaves you ready to wave goodbye to Arlo as he shoulders his lessons learned, ready to face the next part of his life. Thank you, John August.

Personally I thought this book was amazing this has got to be one of the best books I have ever read. This was very appealing towards me but I felt it it was fore a more younger audience seeing as I am 13 I really enjoy action and adventure books but I’m not sure how let’s say an 18 year old would feel about this book. I am very happy that John August has made three amazing books with such detail and sheer imagination. This is a book about a boy called Arlo finch and his adventures coming across different creatures and places and saving many people along the way with his friends in his patrol. Overall I think John August has done an amazing job with writing these books.

I enjoyed this one, but not as much as the first two. The pace didn't seem to flow as well. The opening felt like it started mid-story, which might have worked if I started right after the last book instead of reading that one a year ago when it was released. The book also covered a lot of ground, maybe too much, in Arlo's relationships with family, friends, and middle school as well as the fantasy adventure, and some parts felt rushed or shallow.
It was a satisfying enough end to the series, but I didn't connect with it in the same way as the earlier ones.

I thought this was solid book conclusion to the series. I still will hope for more books in this series because I really want to see him keep going in the rangers. I found this be such a fun read and loved seeing how this book connected back to the other books in this series. I loved how fast pace this book was. I really loved how this book had both supernatural problems but also family problems. This book also tackled friendship drama and high school. I found this book to be a joy to read and really hope we get more book in the series eventually.

This was the weakest entry in an otherwise really good series. I think the biggest issue is everything felt rushed and poorly developed. Almost as if the writer wanted to finish things up and move onto a new project. Even worse if this is indeed the end of the series... nothing other than a couple plot points quite feel tied up or resolved properly. My last complaint, again feeling rushed, is there was almost no new world building and even the bits we were introduced to flew by so fast to be not much more than plot points.

But it is very similar to the first books in general, and if you're thinking about reading the third in a series, well, at that point what kind of review will stop you?
