VERSE AND VENGEANCE by AMANDA FLOWER is the fourth book in the Magical Bookshop Mystery series. This is a cozy paranormal mystery series that centers on a magical bookshop, Charming Books, and its owner Violet Waverly.

Violet’s grandmother is the town’s mayor and has arranged a bike race as a fundraiser for an Underground Railroad museum. Violet and her boyfriend, Police Chief David Rainwater, are participating in the race when they find private investigator Joel Redding dead. Violet works to

Violet Waverly has reluctantly agreed to participate in grandma Daisy's bike race fundraiser for the Underground Railroad Museum. During the race, a private investigator is murdered. Then the body of a man found in Niagara Falls is identified as the ex-husband of police chief David Rainwater's sister. The police are convinced that the murders are connected and they suspect that Violet's favourite student Jo is somehow involved. Violet believes that Jo is innocent and decides to do her own ...more

Charming Books’ owner Violet Waverly accompanied her boyfriend and police chief David Rainwater on the fundraising bike ride in Cascade Springs near Niagara Falls although the distance was quite daunting. Her old bike had seen better days, but it took her safely wherever she needed to go. As she and David careened down Breakneck Hill, they didn’t expect what they found at the bottom. Twenty five miles into the race and the person in front of them wasn’t going any further.

The death of Joel

This was such a cute book. It revolves around the Charming Books’ Bookstore and the new owner/Caretaker Violet Waverly. Violet accompanies her boyfriend police chief David Rainwater on a fundraising bike ride that her grandmother (the Mayor) has organized. This fundraiser was set up to help make money to renovate and repair the museum. Two things happen though that throw everything off course....lol, no pun intended.

First, during the race, someone is murdered, and it just happens to be the Joel

The bookshop has a secret that has been guarded forever by the caretakers, but is that secret about to be outed and will that mean that relationships will change because of the secret. A very interesting and entertaining murder plot is interwoven with the personal storylines of the characters making this book even more intriguing and delightful. The characters are quite well developed and their personal stories strengthen the underlying murder plot. I absolutely can't wait to see what happens in ...more

Verse and Vengeance by Amanda Flower is an awesome addition to this series. Can you tell that I love this series?

Ms. Flower's descriptive writing pulled me into the village of Cascade Springs as Violet and David are to begin riding in the Tour de Cascade bike race and I didn't put the book down until the end. Violet and Grandma Daisy are two of my favorite people in the world of cozy mysteries. I feel at home at Charming Books and want to move in each time I read a new book in the series. The

I absolutely loved this book! Everything I've been hoping would happen in Violet's life has come together in a happy way. There were times when she doubted people that she considered friends, but everything worked out and the killer was caught. I was really surprised by the reveal too and had never suspected that person. (Although I can't say that I'm sorry it was that person lol). I don't want to say too much, because there are a number of spoilers in the book. Any fans of Violet and David will ...more

Ms. Flower is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors and I was particularly happy to see that this series found a new home with Crooked Lane Books. This is a wonderful series with likable characters, a quintessential cozy mystery setting and a plot that will keep the reader engaged throughout the story. Violet and her grandmother Daisy are charming characters that are instantly likable with a bit of the paranormal in them. Once again, Violet is involved in another murder mystery, this time it ...more

I am so glad that I took a chance on this series - I just love every book that is in it!!

I really enjoy Violet and her grandmother, David Rainwater and all of the characters that revolve around them. I enjoy the mystery aspect of the books [though I will admit, I am not a fan of Whitman and that part of the book was a touch tedious for me - he was so pretentious. Geesh.] and I never saw that end coming, though I thought in a previous book that something could happen along these lines, just not

Having returned to Cascade Springs, Violet Waverly managed Charming Books now that her Aunt Daisy has become mayor and involved with a museum for the town and it's history. What no one besides them knows is that Violet has taken over as Caretaker for the magical essence for the bookstore. After a sleazy PI threatens to expose her secrets, he turns up dead during a charity bike race. Amanda Flower has several excellent series, but this one is my favorite with a crow named Faulkner, a tuxedo cat

Grandma Daisy has pulled together a bicycle race to raise money to help open a museum for the town. Violet has decided to give the race a go because her boyfriend, Chief Rainwater thought it would be a great way for them to spend some time together. Things are going well until the two get close to the end of the race and find that one of the riders has had an accident. The man, Redding, was in the village not that long ago giving Violet a hard time and has sense come back. Violet worries that ...more

Eeeep!!! Magical bookshop that leaves cryptic literary messages, an independent cat who knows what he wants and doesn't let anyone stand in his way, a crow that makes his home in the branches of the birch tree that grows up through the bookshop...well...this series is called magical for a reason. It is sublimely so! Makes me giddy just thinking about it. :-)

This is the fourth book in the series and I think it's best if you've read the other books first so you get a feel for all that bookshop

Verse and Vengeance is my least favorite in this series. 2.5 stars

Violet, Daisy and the magical book shop are all just lovely. I wish I were a Waverly woman chosen to be the Caretaker! But book 4 was a little slow with a lot repetition of Cascade Springs history. I like the tie in history between Walt Whitman, the poet and Abraham Lincoln although fiction, it lead me to read more about Whitman watching Lincoln commuted pass his residence on a daily basis. The last poem by Whitman was touching.

Another charming entry in the Magical Bookshop series!

Verse and Vengeance by Amanda Flower is the fourth A Magical Bookshop Mystery. There is a delightful cast of characters in this magical tale. Violet Waverly has just finished teaching another semester at the local college as well as defending her dissertation which has earned her the right to put doctor before her name. A typical cozy. I rolled my eyes a few time as Violet constantly thought everything was her responsibility. That's common for the genre, but was overly obvious in this book. I also thought it a bit of a stretch that she was so concerned about Jo's welfare every minute of the day. But the mystery, motive, & intertwining characters was plausible, Emerson the cat was up to his usual antics, and the romances progressed without being prominent in the story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this, the next in the Magical Bookshop Mystery series. It blended two of my favorite subjects - Literature (Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass) with History.

I was very thankful to receive this book from NetGalley and even though it was the fourth in the series it was easy enough to read as a stand-alone.
I absolutely love the setting and the story here. Violet has inherited a bookstore with magical properties and the many many literary references are just endearing. With the help of the bookstore and her wonderful animal sidekicks Emerson and Faulkner (a cat and a raven respectively) Violet uncovers all the towns mysteries.

Well, this certainly did not help my insomnia because I had to stay awake to finish the entire book. I simply couldn't stop until I had devoured every last morsel of this delightful book! Revisiting Violet and Grandma Daisy was a real treat. Charming Books holds many secrets and it's always fun to learn more. Then there's always murder and the race to solve it and Violet simply must get involved, much to her officer boyfriend's distress.
I highly recommend this book

This is one of my favorite cozy series and I dislike having to make any kind of complaint. I feel like Violet should never have told David Rainwater the secret. It has bothered me how he has practically bullied her into telling him or he would walk away from their relationship. He has no need for the information and she should have decided that it was none of his business and if he walked away because she wouldn’t be bullied into telling him, then he was not the man for her. This makes me wonder ...more

I don't know what it is about Winter that makes me love cozy mysteries more than usual, but this Winter is no exception. I loved the magical little book shop (though I am 100% over Walt Whitman) and adored Violet's grandma..I'm looking forward to the next book!

Amanda Flower, a USA Today bestselling and Agatha Award-winning mystery author, started her writing career in elementary school when she read a story she wrote to her sixth grade class and had the class in stitches with her description of being stuck on the top of a Ferris wheel.
