One of the best, fairest, and most interesting accounts of the Department of Defense in a generation. CDR Snodgrass portrays Mattis as deserving of his accolades and reputation, while revealing that Mattis is also mortal. (Yes, Mattis is not perfect, like all of us.)

Accounts of key meetings with Trump, Tillerson, McMaster, and other senior administration leaders validate earlier reports while adding the depth and nuance needed in our era of soundbytes and headlines.

CDR Snodgrass doe

In his new book, Guy Snodgrass, former Defense Secretary Jim Mattis’s chief speechwriter, provides on-the-record, eyewitness candor about the 2 years Mattis spent in President Trump’s White House NYT

This was an interesting read, overall. It's always fascinating to peek behind the curtains of any organization, be it civilian or military, and see how the process should work, but often doesn't. The story of General Mattis' tenure was fascinating both for its insights into General Mattis as a person, and into the Trump administration. Mr. Snodgrass worked hard to present a balanced portrayal of that entire tenure. Perhaps that's why it didn't completely grip me - it felt too balanced, lacking i ...more

Commander Guy M. Snodgrass (USN, Retired) provides a mixed bag with his memoir, "Holding the Line: Inside Trump's Pentagon with Secretary Mattis", capturing his time as a speechwriter during the tenure of Secretary of Defense Mattis. Fred Kaplan categorizes the work as, "a weirdly schizophrenic book--half swooning hagiography, half bitter critique." I would say this holds true but the manner to which he approaches the work is respectful throughout. Anyone serving in the DoD can glean valuable in ...more

As a military officer, CDR Guy ‘Bus’ Snodgrass, USN (Ret) swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies (foreign and domestic) and to bear true faith and allegiance to the same. He promised to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over him according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Military Officers are often cautioned against talking out of school as if we have no rig

If the author wants to continue working in DC / politics / around the military, publishing this book wasn’t wise. He comes across as blameless, always pointing the finger at others for any mistakes. Also, he rarely praises his co-workers - continually putting down those he worked with and for. Snodgrass’ departure from the military wasn’t his choice and the book seems to be his cathartic, personal journey.

Interesting look inside the inner workings of the pentagon while Mattis was Secretary of Defense.

Written by one the speechwriters that worked closely with Mattis in forming the message that would be sent to the military, allies and the public.

It is a good look at the impact of the revolving door in the Trump administration and the lack of domestic and international stability.

Because the author was a 20 year naval man he gives a good military perspective.

Wow... this is the Mattis book everyone was waiting for. Written by his speechwriter, Commander “Bus” Snodgrass, this account will allow you to be a “fly on the wall” during Mattis’ time as SECDEF. From authoring the National Defense Strategy, to some of the most riveting meetings with the POTUS, you will not be able to put this one down.

A good read that offers a glimpse behind the scenes. Far better read than Mattis' own book and shows just how naive Mattis is in politics
