Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit.
Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.
In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding.
Potter eventually published 24 children's books, the most recent being The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots (2016), and having become financially independent of her parents, was able to buy a farm in the Lake District, which she extended with other purchases over time.
In her forties, she married a local solicitor, William Heelis. She became a sheep breeder and farmer while continuing to write and illustrate children's books. Potter died in 1943 and left almost all of her property to The National Trust in order to preserve the beauty of the Lake District as she had known it, protecting it from developers.
Potter's books continue to sell well throughout the world, in multiple languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats, including a ballet, films, and in animation.
This book tells the story of a little rabbit named Peter. Peter lives with his mom and three sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail under a root of a fir tree. though Peter’s mom specifically warns them not to go to Mr. McGregor’s Garden, Peter does so anyways. we see how everything starts off nice as Peter enjoys some of the things in Mr. McGregor’s Garden but then he faces a lot of different obstacles once Mr. McGregor sees Peter and he tries to run away. In the process of running away Peter loses all his clothes and shoes, and subsequently gets lost. Peter wanders around trying to find his way back home and eventually hears Mr. McGregor working in his garden and sees the gate to get back out. Peter makes his way home safely, but we see at the end of the story how he is not doing too well, and his mom puts him to bed with some tea to make him feel better, while his sisters are able to enjoy bread milk and blackberries. This book is a childhood favorite of mine and is something that I can remember my grandmother and mom reading to me as a young child. This adorable story gives young children the simple message to always listen to your parents, because they usually know what is best for you. If Peter would have listened to his mom, he would have avoided a lot of trouble. The illustrations are so intricate and beautiful. Charles Santore does a great job of bringing this story to life is such beautiful detail that makes these depictions of the story one of my favorites. A great and simple book to remind kids just how important listening to your parents, teacher, or any important adult can be.
