Strong-willed Lana Moreno won’t rest until she finds out the truth about her heroic brother’s death. Well, go figure. I usually rate Carol Ericson books quite low, because she pumps out about six a year, and they tend to follow the same formula, with way too much chat about food, and then fail to wrap up the storyline whatsoever. That's not the case here. If it weren't for all the endless dialogue about food, I wouldn't even have figured this was a Carol Ericson book! The plot moves quickly, delivers good twists, maintains interest and it's all satisfactorily resolved at the end, leaving some tendrils that set up the next book without affecting anything that happened in this one.
It can be done! Never would have expected it from Ericson, but I like to be pleasantly surprised!
Heroine Lana Moreno is determined to find out the truth about the death of her brother at a Nigerian outpost, and believes the government could be covering something up. Stepping in to help her is Logan Hess, part of the Delta Force team run by Major Rex Danvers, who is being set up by unknown factions. He learns that Rex was once in Nigeria and thinks this could be linked to what is happening to him. Yes, this book is connected to that trio of awful "Delta Force" books that comprised Ericson's previous trilogy. But you don't need to read any of those books to follow what's going on here. (Rendering those previous terrible books even more pointless.)
Lana is eagerly anticipating her brother Gil's journals, believing they may shed light on what led him and his comrades to be murdered. What she doesn't count on is the fact that the bad guys are aware that there's incriminating evidence floating around out there, and desperately want their hands on those journals as well.
Carol Ericson really has delivered a nifty little romantic thriller here. I'm still having a little trouble believing I wrote that! The plot holds together well and is peppered with some decent action sequences. Yes, there are a couple of contrivances to help the plot along, but they were pretty minor. And the chit-chat about food is perhaps even more heavy-handed than usual, which only goes to show how enjoyable the rest of the book was that I was able to overlook that. While not terribly deep as characters, Lana and Logan were likable protagonists and there was at least enough flesh to their backstories to make them feel like real people.
As mentioned before, the book provides all the answers required of it (very rare for Ericson), but actually generates in interest in what may come next. What a pleasant surprise all around.
This is the 2nd book I read by Carol Ericson. I enjoyed this book's storyline. I loved ❤ the action in this story. I loved ❤ the suspense in this story. I loved ❤ Lana's character. I felt sorry for Lana. I loved ❤ Logan's character. I loved ❤ the ending. Awesome job Ms. Ericson.
With ENEMY INFILTRATION, the first book in her Red White and Built: Delta Force Deliverance spin-off series, Carol Ericson takes us into an action packed race against time to figure out who was in the know on a covert operation that that killed fellow soldiers and is now being blamed on a likely innocent man.
Lana Moreno is a complex character. She had my attention from the start when she set out to find answers about what really killed her brother overseas. I really liked her interaction with Logan and found their attraction to add a great depth to the story line. I wasn't as enthralled with the secret we discover about her as it tended to detract my attention from the important parts of the story rather than add anything to it.
Logan was a good-hearted guy from the start. He's on a mission to clear his commander's name who he is convinced is innocent of the charges pending against him, and when he runs across Lana in the mix of it all, he decides she might lead him to answers that will be helpful as he aids in her search.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for a bit of mystery with an intense amount of chemistry between the couple. They are cute together and bring a nice bit of banter into the dialogue. I enjoyed it!
This is a great blend of action and intrigue. I have been enjoying each story of this series and Lana story has provided some answers to some questions. To find out which ones you need to read the book. I like who her love interest is for he's a perfect complement to her. Logan Hess has every reason to be vain and selfish but he has a good head on his soldier. I like the way she blends Lana's history into the story with a positive note. How its made her a stronger person. I like the blending of action and romance in this story. She makes it hard to put down a book. Which is nice for a book. I also like the intrigue in the book about who is behind what happened at the embassy. She gets you thinking. Looking forward to the next in the series and the answers it will bring. Hmm I wonder if we can hint at a story for Alexis Logan's sister. That would be cool.. J
