Driving along the busy M60 in Manchester, DI Ridpath is forced to brake when a young man wearing only a pair of boxer shorts runs in front of his car. Ridpath manages to stop just in time, but the man sets off running again, straight into the path of a lorry, and in addition to this horrifying tragedy, Ridpath saw another man behind the barrier who was clearly in pursuit of the now deceased young man, and the assailant was pointing a gun - the problem is, nobody other than Ridpath saw the man wi ...more

This is a fast paced and thrilling piece of crime fiction from MJ Lee, featuring an interesting protagonist in DI Ridpath, suffering from cancer although currently in remission, with problematic personal and family issues. This is the second in the series, but my first, however, it works just fine as a standalong. Ridpath is working at the coroner's office but still linked with MIT, which has now acquired a new boss in Claire Trent, finding himself surrounded by ghastly organisational politics t ...more

Detective Inspector Thomas Ridpath is back in the second exciting installment in the DI Ridpath Series.

The first book ‘Where the Truth Lies‘ introduced us to DI Ridpath as he hunted ‘The Beast of Manchester’ and started his job working at The Coroners Office after he returned from sick leave from fighting cancer. This time DI Ridpath is trying to solve the case of crime gang bosses children being murdered and bring the murderer or murderers to

He chewed the rope once more despite the pain, twisting his mouth so his canine teeth came in contact with it.
He would escape, he wasn’t going to be trapped here for the rest of his life. Soon, the family would realise he was missing. His father would come looking for him, wouldn’t he?
His mouth was dry, all spit absorbed by the rope. He stared at his wrists. A few fibres were sticking ou

DI Ridpath Book 2

Manchester has been at peace for twenty years and DI Ridpath is in the process of getting his life back together when everything goes wrong. Driving to meet his daughter, he is caught in a horrific motorway accident, in which a near naked man is run down by a lorry, while fleeing from lone gunman. Why did no one else witness the gunman?

This is another gripping read from the author M J Lee.l like the main character Thomas Ridpath for several reasons: he's loyal even though he is

Where the Dead Fall is the second book in the DI Ridpath series and happens to be even better than the preceding novel. It's a compelling page-turner with many twists, turns and ample misdirection to keep the reader guessing and there is more action than you can shake a stick at. With fast pacing, an interesting and unusual protagonist and a superbly crafted, exciting yarn, crime fiction aficionados will find a lot of enjoyment within these pages. I never thought I would say this, but I very muc ...more

I would like to thank Netgalley and Canelo for an advance copy of Where the Dead Fall, the second novel to feature Manchester based DI Ridpath.

On his way back from a training course Ridpath is forced to brake suddenly by the appearance of a young man running across the motorway, only for him to be hit by a lorry who couldn’t stop. Ridpath believes he saw a gunman chasing the young man and shuts down the motorway as a crime scene. Unfortunately this causes a gridlock and calls Ridpath’s judgement

Now before I begin my review I will say that I have been left with a bit of a Annie Wilkes (Cathy Bates) twitch, which is a good thing, because this is an awesome read that left me gagging for more, turning the last page back and forth searching for something that wasn’t there. DI Ridpath is back for a second outing in this extremely addictive series that can be read as a stand alone but you would only be cheating yourself if you don’t read them both. (My review for book 1 to follow soon).

This was an excellent follow up to the first book Where the Truth Lies. DI Ridpath is still working for the Coroner. He is returning home from a two week course when a half naked man runs in front of his car on the M60. He just manages to stop when the man looks to his left, there is another man on the side of the road with a gun. The half naked man panics and runs further into the speeding traffic where he is promptly splattered by an articulated vehicle. Ridpath makes himself unpopular by clos ...more

Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for this arc.

This is the 2nd in the DI Ridpath series and even better than the 1st. I didn't notice any of the obvious plot contrivances and implausibilities that I found in the earlier book. This also had a nice twisty, twisty plot. It started off a little slow with 3 seemingly disparate death investigations, one of which Ridpath shouldn't have even been involved with, except he was the main witness. Poor Ridpath didn't seem to know who was his primary boss in thi

This is the second book in this series, and in my opinion, better than the first book.
DI Ridpath is still at the coroner’s office but his heart is still with the MIT.
Ridpath is driving to meet his daughter, but is caught up in a motorway accident, in which a near-naked man is rundown by a lorry.
Ridpath sees a man at the side of the road pointing a gun at the man but he’s not caught on CCTV, so no-one believes him.
Ridpath starts investigating and works with Charlie to try and get to the bottom

I enjoyed the second in the series probably a little bit more than the previous one. I quite like Ridpath, he's working on me.
The story is good, solid and written well.
A book that you don't want to stop reading as it gets under your skin and I found myself thinking about it, do I gave in and finished it with several 'what the' moments.

Thanks to NetGalley, Canelo and M J Lee for the opportunity to read this book.

Where the Dead Fall by M J Lee
I think M J Lee is becoming close to being one of my favorite authors of British Murder Mystery/Dectectives stories. This is the second DI Ridpath book I have read and both I have thoroughly enjoyed and they come under the 'hard to put down' category.
Based in Manchester, which Lee brings to life, Ridpath is a fully formed all rounded character, where all his faults and flaws are apparent and he tries to build his crumbling personal and work life after struggling to
Jane Hunt

Fast-paced, believable, complex characters, an authentic, recognisable setting and a likeable detective; four of the reasons, the DI Ridpath series is a favourite of mine.

Ridpath is a conflicted man, driven by his role in the Murder Investigation Team (MIT), he neglects his wife and daughter who he loves dearly, the situation implodes when he becomes dangerously ill. In remission and reassigned, he finds his detective skills are in constant demand, and maybe he can rebuild his family life too,

And I was so looking forward to reading this book and boy I wasn't disappointed!! DI Ridpath returns in this sequel to Where the Truth Lies. Ridpath is still working at the Coroner's Office and juggling that busy role with his health and increasingly fracturing family life. Whilst driving to see his daughter, Ridpath sees a semi-naked young man run into the busy road. When DI Ridpath sees a man running away from a man with a gun across the M60 - and getting hit by a truck he causes chaos by closing the motorway on match day. Nobody else sees the man with the gun but he is adamant on what he saw. Causing problems with his career and dealing with only just returning to work after cancer treatment. he keeps digging. until the truth is found.

Another great book by Lee although some of the references to how Ridpath is feeling tired etc can be a bit repetitive.

Really enjoyed this book - there has been this gradual shift in gritty Northern set crime thrillers away from the cosmopolitan London scene; due in parts to the work of Line of Duty but big novels by A. A. Dhand and Joseph Knox has shown that readers of crime novels and that is a big market wants to read about other areas.

MJ Lee has woven a gripping novel that zips along, I found myself reading it in four large chunks - characters are rendered efficiently and the main protagonist of DI Ridpath i

Excellent crime fiction: this is the second novel featuring D.I. Ridpath, a Manchester detective. I haven’t read the first novel but this works well as a standalone. However, who you don’t want to know who the guilty party was in book one, read it first, as it is given away in this one.

D.I. Ridpath is having a hard time, he is in remission from cancer but fearful it will return and he is estranged from his wife and daughter. He has been seconded out of the Major Incident Team to work for the Cor

This is the second book in M J Lee's DI Ridpath series, which is different to the majority of British crime fiction but only in good ways. Ridpath, even his wife only ever uses his surname, is, as many before him, a troubled soul, but, thank goodness, not because of the job.

The previous book revolved around a number of abductions and to begin with I thought this was set along similar lines. I was very quickly proved wrong. This time the storyline centres around a death which happens right in fro

DI Tom Ridpath is back in this second thriller but don’t worry if you’ve not read the first as this book stands alone very well. Still in remission from his myeloma but not very careful about looking after himself, Tom is still ‘not quite accepted’ back in his former full-time DI role on the Major Investigation Team (MIT) and remains seconded to the coroner’s office, but this gives an opportunity for the author to explore the role of the coroner and it’s really interesting to see how this crosse ...more

This is a gripping crime thriller that really did have me guessing until the very end!

DI Ridpath is on his way to meet his daughter when someone runs out in front of him, and is subsequently hit by a lorry, but at the same time he also sees someone at the side of the road….was the person being chased? Where the Dead Fall is an extremely good thriller, although not having read the previous Ridpath book in this series that in no way spoilt my enjoyment and did not cause any confusion. This is a fast paced exciting story.
