Jerry Mintz has spent most of his life promoting learner-centered education and the empowerment of children. In No Homework & Recess All Day, Mintz draws on this experience to provide an overview, brief history, and many practical lessons to learn from the growing movement of democratic and alternative schools around the world. If you've ever thought of homeschooling, sending a child to a democratic school, attending a democratic school, or maybe even starting a democratic school, this is the book for you.
Jerry established and for eighteen years ran a free school based on the principles of Iroquois democracy. He is the author of No Homework and Recess All Day and is currently Director of Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO).
Jerry Mintz gives a nice introduction to the topic. It doesn't get very deep, but it is a quick a read. The greatest value of the book is Jerry's survey of the different education alternatives and the options for democracy in education. That said, one wouldn't think of Jerry as having such strong opinions, I've never seen him as meek but he seems more apologetic than what he aparently is.
A nice overview of his take on democratic schools. He's visited so many and tells their stories. Very helpful for learning what is needed to really do a democratic/alternative school.
