Arnold and Louise #4
All the Fun Winter Things #4
There's too much fun to be had in the snow to sleep through the winter season! At least that's what Louise thinks. In this story designed to engage early readers, charming characters combine with simple text, lively illustrations, and laugh-out-loud humor to help boost kids' confidence and create lifelong readers!
Snow has fallen and the pond is frozen, so Arnold knows that--as a bear--it's time to hibernate! But Louise insists that he'll miss all the fun winter things if he does, so she convinces him to try hibernating like a chipmunk instead. They'll sleep for a short time, wake up to go sledding or have a snowball fight, and repeat! The only problem is, Arnold can't seem to keep his eyes open. What if he can't stay awake for the winter fun?
Exciting, easy-to-read books are the stepping stone a young reader needs to bridge the gap between being a beginner and being fluent.

Arnold's a bear who'd like nothing better than to spend the winter hibernating. His pal, Louise, a chipmunk, has other ideas. She's got a list of fun winter activities planned, and she's expecting Arnold to join in. This is a cute early reader, but in my neck of the woods, chipmunks hibernate, too.
Maybe they should have had a pajama party.

Arnold and Louise: All the Fun Winter Things by Erica S. Perl, 55 pages. CHAPTER BOOK. Penguin Workshop (Penguin Random House), 2019.

BUYING ADVISORY: EL (K-3) - ESSENTIAL
AUDIENCE APPEAL: AVERAGE
Winter means hibernating time for Arnold, a bear, but Louise, a squirrel, has no intention of losing his friend for the winter. Louise tries to keep Arnold awake by organizing all of the winter activities for them to participate in until he decides that letting Arnold sleep and to simply check on him during the winter season.
I think these Arnold and Louise books are excellent books for new chapter book readers, and this one is no exception. The pace is fast, but the story is simple enough for readers who are working hard focusing on the words to follow.

The 4th book in the Arnold and Louise beginning chapter book series, All the Fun Winter Things, follows two friends as they try to experience all the wonderful things to do in winter -- ice sliding, sledding, snowball fights -- before settling down to hibernate. The large print, manageable vocabulary, engaging illustrations, and amusing interplay between Arnold the bear and Louise the chipmunk make this series a great choice for children just starting to read chapter books. -April

Louise wants Arnold to skip hibernation and do all the fun winter things with her. He agrees to do the fun winter things as long as he can also get some sleep in between. But Louise doesn't let Arnold sleep for long enough. Cute, but I sometimes find Louise frustrating.

When Louise and Arnold realize that their hibernation patterns are different, they rush around trying to do all the fun winter things before Arnold gets too tired. Very cute.

Really cute, nice amount of white space in margins, almost a bit like Frog and Toad.
