Unfinished Business: Pursuit of an Antarctic Killer

Rate this book
Unfinished Business: Pursuit of an Antarctic Killer is Book II of The Antarctic Murders Trilogy. It continues the story of Captain Roberto Muoz of the Lientur and the hunt for the millions of dollars in US and British cash, negotiable securities, gold coins, and jewelry that were stolen from the Banco Central de Chile following the Chilean Earthquake of May, 1960. The story of the theft and murders that followed is told in Book I: Frozen in Time: Murder at the Bottom of the World. Unfinished Business introduces Captain Mateo Valderas and Lieutenant-Commander Antonio Del Ro of the Chilean Navys Office of Internal Affairs. They have been sent to Arica, Chile, where the Lientur is undergoing repairs, to solve a murder that took place on the naval base. Their investigations uncover evidence that leads them to someone who is determined to settle old scores and wrap up unfinished business on two continents - South America and Antarctica.

"Unfinished Business: Pursuit of an Antarctic Killer" by Theodore Jerome Cohen is a captivating sequel to "Frozen in Time" by this author. In "Unfinished Business" we learn that one of the "heroes" from "Frozen in Time" isn't so heroic after all. In fact, he is a master criminal who has played on both sides of the law for much of his life.

"Unfinished Business" consists of subterfuge, deceit, cold-blooded murder and betrayal within the Chilean Navy. Former classmates Captain Valederas and Captain Munoz play a costly game of cat and mouse throughout the story, with the mouse generally a couple steps ahead of the cat.

Although this novel will stand alone, it is actually the second volume in a trilogy, following "Frozen in Time", and preceding "End Game". The trilogy is soon to be released under a single cover, with the title "Cold Blood". I strongly recommend reading all three novels in order, for the optimum reading experience. This is an excellent story based on actual events the author experienced, and it is very engrossing.

Unfinished Business is just that as Book 2 of the trilogy of Antarctic thrillers, as a work of fiction based on real events that took place between 1960 and 1965. This book tells in detail how Munoz masterminded a sudden opportunity for a 1960 bank robbery in the millions as well as other thefts, has eluded the police and Naval investigations and hearings to escape undetected. In fact, he testified at some of the hearings! He is also a murderer and although some people know he is guilty, there is only circumstantial evidence and no hard evidence. He is living well at the end of the book and has earned a prestigious award and a promotion to an international position.

Events occur like a donkey cart stops traffic when Munoz needs to make quick time as part of his plan, but he manages to escape without a problem. He leaves behind coins with messages indicating he has outsmarted the investigators. Valderas "the bloodhound" is someone who knows him well, yet cannot find a shred of evidence to convict him. Time seems to pass slowly as Valderas thinks over the evidence on a daily basis (for years).

This book provides insight, facts, and background information so hopefully one day Munoz will hopefully make a mistake somewhere or events will catch up with him. I am hoping something along those lines happens in Book 3 (End Game) which I am eager to begin reading right now. In fact, I have started the last book in this trilogy.

A Mostly Boring Thriller

Generally I consider myself a fan of mysteries/thrillers and having been to some of the places in the story, I was hoping for a bit of nostalgia to boot … but it was not to be. The story itself had a little action, but much of it was told in passive voice taking away from any suspense that would have made it interesting and not something that sounds like reading a police report. Even the detailed court proceedings were extremely prediction and not that interesting. Perhaps it would have been better if I had read the first of the series, but this was billed as a potentially stand alone sequel that really wasn’t. Without a solid foundation it was just too easy to drift away and miss parts of the narrated story … but when my attention returned, it never really felt like I missed much. At 5 hours for 250+ pages, it is a bit on the short side, which limited how complex the plot could be … which seemed like it just faded out in the end … or I missed something in the rush for it to be over. I am sure this works for some folks … but not for me.

I was given this free advance review/listener copy (ARC) audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Oh, how some pillars of the community are so deceptive! Two of Captain Munoz's murder victims are even reduced in rank, including their death and survivor benefits as he escapes conviction for this and other crimes. No new evidence surfaces during book 2 of this trilogy that begins with Frozen in Time, but much is explained and the reader now knows the facts. If only Valderas can find some evidence! At least he and Del Rio have figured out the truth but only have circumstantial evidence so far.

And besides all the intrigue and plot twists and turns, the penguins shooting up in the air are not your everyday occurrence here in land-locked Minnesota.

Entertaining and interesting read. Part tells the information, and part tells about the hearings and how they fail to catch Munoz. I can't wait to read Book 3.

I really enjoyed this story!

This is book 2 in a 3 book series. I thought it was a great murder mystery and well written. The narration was absolutely perfect. In fact the narrator was so good that I found his South American accent (forgive me if I didn’t name the accent correctly) hard to understand at times.
This did not stop me from listening to this great story.
I can’t wait to read/listen to book 3.

I enjoyed this 2nd book in this series and how things are shaping up in the various investigations. This is a Series that Needs to be read/listen to in order or one would not understand what is going on. The new Narrator is more animated in his speech and inflections when reading this Story. Looking forward to the 3rd book and the final conclusion of this Story.
