Many books covering the intersection of business & communication assume that the reader is seeking to persuade others for sales/marketing purposes. This concise and refreshingly different book starts with a clear definition of workplace communication and emphasizes the importance of personal responsibility for it as a leader to support the most important resource any organization has: their employees. Filled with brief case stories from the author's 30 years of experience in different roles and lots of strategies to consider adding to your toolkit, with especially helpful ones regarding technology like tips unique to email and texting. Tips are also summarized by chapter number in the back so you can quickly flip to get more details when needed. A very helpful resource to keep close at hand in the office!

There are plenty of books about communication in the workplace. This one stands out for two reasons. First, it was written by an expert who knows her topic inside and out and has the skill to impart the knowledge she has gained from her experience as a lawyer and human resources executive. Second, all the case studies and stories are presented in concrete terms, which means all the methods, techniques, and ideas are instantly accessible and easy to adopt in every day, real-life situations. The book is a valuable tool and resource for anyone who wants to communicate effectively with employees or co-workers. Kudos to Diana Peterson-More for this wonderful book!

If you want a basic book about the fundamentals of communication, then this is a good book to have. Peterson covers how to make requests that gets others to say yes; how to communicate with others in the way they want to be communicated with; how to make your communication strategic; why it’s important to listen and ask before you tell; why using “I” statements are more effective than using “you” statements; how to provide feedback effectively; how to overcome perceptions and assumptions; why neutral language is best in the workplace; how to communicate more effectively using technology; and how apologies and humility can change the workplace. It’s not new information, but evidence would suggest most of us don’t communicate very well even though we know all of these important things we should do. It’s a great refresher in effective communication. i received an ARC.
