1863: The continuing saga of a Yankee school teacher in the Union Army: Young Freeman Colby joined the 39th Massachusetts Regiment in search of “better returns,” but now he just wants to survive the war and return home to his friends & family in New England! Marching deeper into the war-torn heart of Virginia, he crosses paths with countless fellow survivors — widows, poets, volunteer nurses, refugee children, ragged soldiers, brave mothers striving to deliver their families from slavery… This wide-ranging graphic novel weaves together their stories with Colby’s actual letters home, laying bare the day-to-day human struggles that shaped one of the most consequential years in American history. [ This is Volume 2 of the "Civil War Diary of Freeman Colby" series. ]
Cartoonist, musician, & teacher Marek Bennett lives in New Hampshire and leads COMICS WORKSHOPS for all ages throughout New England and the world beyond.
Whoops, read this a long time ago but forgot to review it! I got to see some early drafts of this (Marek asked for help proofreading and editing), so it was fun to watch his progress and see his thought process and choices made. He even gave me a cameo within the book!
In a slight departure from the first volume, this one focuses on a few other characters apart from Freeman Colby. Wonderful choice, since it provides additional perspectives. Otherwise, it's just as accessible and enjoyable as the first volume. I highly recommend it for young readers. The deceptively simple drawing style will draw them in, and they'll end up absorbing some important history.
Great and accessible 1st hand point of view of the Civil War. Brings to life the day to day living of different people during the war, which can be forgotten when just reading about battles.
The drawings are great and make it a very enjoyable read.
