Xin is a bounty hunter used to capturing his targets, but he may have met his match in Jaime. A young man with unique powers, Jaime is on the run from forces larger than either of them. On a distant world, far in the future, these two men will have a night of adventure neither will soon forget.
This 8,000 word m/m story contains explicit sexytimes and a good deal of snark.

I actually think one should read this after Machine Metal Magic even though this comes chronologically first. The small reveals make it that much more worth it.
Xin is definitely a roguishly intriguing character with a deep down sense of goodness despite his bounty hunter status.
I know I wouldn't say no if he got his own story or spinoff. Just saying.
It's the prequel to book 1 (Jaime's book) and tells us how Jaime got to have Xin's coat. Xin is a bounty hunter and he happens to cross Jaime's path a couple of days after Jaime takes a runner from the Commonwealth. I wonder if Xin will become my most favourite character. He was sassy and roguish and clearly has a soft heart, even if he prefers to hide it. I can't wait to meet him again in book 3!
Definitely should be read after Machine Metal Magic (even though it's technically a prequel) and now that I've reacquainted myself with this 'verse, I feel a re-read of Book 1 is in order...
The level of world building for such a short story was impressive, especially as it didn't come off as an information dump. The writing was captivating. The characters were intriguing. The story was interesting. And most importantly in a prequel, it left me wanting more.
An intriguing start for a series. Be aware that like the title says there will be some kind of sex involved , and if you are not a fan of seeing one of the MCs of the next book, with someone else other than his future lover, well then you better skip it.
Fun, smutty, free pre-series read. Doesn't add a ton to the series, and I wasn't necessarily all that interested in reading a pre-series sex scene between two characters who ultimately end up pairing off with brothers in the main series, but it was enjoyable.
This is a free novella from Hanna Dare's website. How fun was this? We get a glimpse into Jaime and Xin's first meeting and How Jaime got the coat. Loved it!
Exactly what I want in a short that is a prequel to a series: a solid introduction to the characters without unnecessary exposition, a contained plot, chemistry, and enough excitement to make me want to keep reading the series. I'm already enjoying these characters and definitely want to read more of them.
Only complaint would be that the sex scene, though delightful, felt a little inappropriate given the circumstances. But that's just me being picky.
This book is not a romance because the characters have their own different HEAs later, but it’s fantastic. You might actually want to read it after book one but then in order during a reread.
I wish that I read this before the first two Machine Metal Magic books, I think I would have enjoyed it more. Hanna really has a thing for conniving, smug criminals apparently tho and I’m here for it. Also I’m ALWAYS here for more Jaime. Always. I love this man. He’s so pure.
