I don't give many 5 Star review but this came close since anytime when I was not reading it I was wondering what was going to happen next and could not wait to get back to it.

Taya and Thane were an unlikely couple and to be honest the romance while a big part of the plot was not the overwhelming force here, a lot of sword and sorcery theme. I have to say that the ending felt a wee bit rushed but very satisfying.

After a shocking start to this story that looked like it was going to be a dystopian novel (which I kinda dislike) it slowly evolves into something else, we have a big evil secret, easy to hate bad guys, and the shining knight, throw in a bit of romance and so whats not to love .

I have gotten so used to series it was great to have an amazing stand alone that was not part of a series. The author J.C. McKenzie has written several like this, its like she writes books that could easily be turned into a series but she has only 1 series she writes, almost all of her stand alone novels could be turned into a series with ease but this was a great read. Highly recommend, started out as dystopian and evolved into a bit of fantasy and a touch of the Andre Norton "Witch World" for me. This may be the best stand alone novel in a long time for me.

Well this book totally blindsided me. I looked at the cover and expected urban fantasy then I started it and thought oh it's going to be dystopian. Well let me state here and now that I was totally wrong as our very accomplished heroine Taya stepped into a world that felt both magical and medieval. If I had to categorise this book it's probably fantasy but done in a very unique way.
There is romance but it's a slow build up which works well although as a reader I could see it coming. Taya is pretty awesome although I did find her change from normal everyday young woman to bloodthirsty assassin a little odd. Something was pretty obvious and the ending confirmed it but actually I didn't mind because I was thoroughly enjoying guessing what would happen next. The end and epilogue to my mind felt a little too quick but I guess it's left in such a way that if the author ever decided to revisit these characters she could. So in conclusion I really enjoyed my first book by this author and I'm struggling to rate it but as the ending did feel a little too rushed and trite I will go with four but honestly it's well worth your time.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

Taya is out camping with her girlfriends when the Blue Wave hits, killing everyone she loves in an instant. Her friends are nothing but piles of ash but Taya appears to be none the worse off. Eerie. She packs when she can fit in her backpack and heads off for the nearest town. She appears to be alone but then she sees what’s she discovers later is the invading force known as the Arkavians. She’s captured by Lord Thane and he gives her a choice: become a slave in his house or bond herself to him as his own personal bodyguard. Once her choice is made, she’s thrust into a world she’s never known with powers she never knew she possessed. Her hatred of Arkavians and what they did to her loved ones burns bright but so does her attraction to Lord Thane. One way or another, she’ll survive because she’s her father’s daughter.

The Night House is one of those novels that straddles genres but readers don’t notice because they’re so engrossed in the story. From the beginning, one word echoes in the background: survival. The isolation Taya feels resonates is countered by all the lessons her father taught her. The action is intense, especially when she and Thane meet. He sees something unique in her and offers her a deal. Taya and Thane are a classic enemies to lovers couple yet with plenty of snark to make things interesting. The plot moves at a quick pace and the world-building is exceptional. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like this before.

If you’re a swords and sorcery fan and looking for something completely new, I recommend this book. If you’re a fan of strong heroines and an equally strong hero, this book is for you. If you love dystopian fiction with a bit of romance thrown in, this is your next read. Highly recommend!

Any time there’s a sword on a book cover, I’m interested. But when the main character is a woman with two swords made of lightning and dressed like an assassin? Then top it off with J.C.’s martial arts background? Well, I knew I was in for a great story with some awesome action. Going in, I wasn’t sure if it would lean more toward sci-fi or fantasy, but it was a surprisingly unique mix of both, and even though I’m not much into sci-fi, I loved the world setup in Night House. Taya, as I had hoped, was a strong protagonist who is intent on surviving a reaping of Earth by the alternate realm of Arkavia. Arkavia doesn’t have enough resources, so they have their own survival in mind, and they do it by wiping out technology and most of the population with what Taya calls “the Blue Wave of Death” before going in and sacking the planet. And that’s how Taya meets Lord Thane.

Needless to say, Taya holds a lot of hostility toward the Arkavians, but when Lord Thane presents her with an offer that will increase her chances of survival, she’s smart enough to control her hatred and take it. Dead girls can’t take revenge, right? One thing I loved about the story, though, is we don’t long stay trapped in Taya’s hatred. As much as she resents what the Arkavians have done, the timeline fast forwards through some of her adjustment period, just enough to minimize the wallowing and realize that the Arkavians are as human as she is underneath their strength and super-powers. And Thane is a good, honorable guy dealing the best he can with some terrible scars from his childhood and the world he belongs to.

I loved Thane and his band of guys, how they accepted Taya into their group, and the banter between them all. Taya is someone I’d totally hang out with – she’s snarky and tough, smart and funny, and makes her fair share of mistakes as she’s finding her way. Did I mention lightning swords? Lightning swords, people! The Arkavian world was also fun to explore and discover with Taya, and the sparks between Thane and Taya were just right. If you like awesome fight scenes, a heroine who perseveres through whatever is thrown her way, and a slow-burn romance that keeps things steamy, The Night House is a must read.

I started reading this one as individual chapters, and I was instantly hooked. I loved this one. Taya was out on a camping trick with her best friends & they were having a good time. She was standing in the water when a blue death wave came rolling thru instantly turning her friends in to ash. She was the only one that survived. As she's looking for other survivors, she runs across one that tries to take all of her stuff, and she kills him in self-defense. She nears a town & as she's hiding, she sees a marauding group on horseback wearing armor. She realizes that they aren't human, but an invading species called Arkavians.

While she's on a recon to take over a supply wagon with a group of survivors that have banded together, she's captured by Thane, an Arkavian. He gives her the option to be a slave in his house or to bond herself to him for a year & be his personal soldier/bodyguard. She chooses the bond. She has vowed vengeance on all Arkavians as payback for killing her friends and, maybe, her family.

This story is everything I expect from J.C. The characters are perfectly, well-developed and easy to connect with. You have tragedy, love, heartache, and joy. Action & adventure are around every single corner for everyone in the story. It does end with an HEA. This was written as a stand-alone story, but I feel that this could be a series as there are lots of characters that could be written about.

Interesting book with great twists into the sword and sorcery realm. Taya is a modern woman who evolves into a strong warrior woman throughout the novel. The beginning is shocking and drastic....and confusing. Confusion probably should reign in a post-apocalyptic novel. I would term this a slow burn romance. I liked the action in this book, and the characters. Great villain plotting, too. However, at times I was lost in the world-building. I would definitely read a sequel if there were ever to be one. Ends with HEA.

This was my first book by J.C. McKenzie and I really, really liked it. It was nothing like I expected it to be in the best way possible. When I read the blurb I was intrigued and I'm happy to say the book didn't disappoint at all. It was unique and full of twists I didn't see coming and once the plot grabbed me I wasn't able to put it down untill I finished it. The start pointed at a completely different story but once the book found it's footing, oh boy, what a ride it was. The author creates a fantasy world full of magic and lords from an alternative universe, but she doesn't feel the need to spend time laying out that world for you. Instead, you discover it as you're reading the book. It feels much more natural that way. The book was different, entertaining, and kept my attention. And the characters were very interesting and were easy to root for. My only complaint is that the story sometime felt a little choppy, like some scenes that explained why or how something came to be were missing.
But overall, I enjoyed the book very much. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Enjoyable book, I think this could have been a series. I had a lot of questions and things I wanted expanded on but it was an interesting world. Taya settled a bit too easily into her role........imo
but I liked Thane
Overall if your looking for a single fantasy romance book I recommend this

Great intro to wonderful world of science fantasy, with aliens, portals, swords and fierce h. She's awesome, taught to fight by her father and just as well as she's in for the fight of her life. The H is also a great fighter, but his family dynamic is a mess. Loved their connection and the importance of personal integrity for these two people. Loved the writing style, lots of showing and not too much telling. It was well done.

Alpha Female Meet Alpha Male what can you say about this book. Well we have a Kung Fu chick that wields 2 swords that have lightning. A medieval type feel to it plus a mythology reference "Hades", assassins, plus house wars. This book pretty much has all you need to settle into a few hours of binge reading. I think this is a single book but J.C. McKenzie left room to grow it if the author would like to. I feel the world building could been just a bit more extensive. I had a hard time placing my head in the travels from house to house but that's not a big deal. There is a slight strong bit of Heavy Romance and The profanity was strong. but this was still a good book and I'd suggest anyone looking for a good read to pick this book up.

First, I have to admit, I love everything I've ever read by J.C. McKenzie. She has a way with sassy, irreverent heroines who KICK ASS. So when I heard she had a new book coming out - a standalone, not a series - I rushed to preorder. And now it's available for purchase - so what are you waiting for?

J.C.McKenzie has a way with world-building that plucks the reader out of their reality and plops them smack dab in the middle of her story. The Night House is no exception. The story starts with her main character on holiday with her friends. As the characters joke about surviving the zombie apocolypse, a true cataclysmic event occurs, wiping out a large portion of the local population.

Alien invasion. A portal from another dimension, sending soldiers to pillage and take prisoners as slaves for their world, and simultaneously suck the life out of earth.

Our strong, sassy heroine is Taya, who watches her friends die in a magical shock wave that miraculously spares her life. She bands together with other human survivors, stealing supplies and making life difficult for the invaders. Until four months after the invasion, when she's captured by one of the Arkavian lords and given a choice: work for him or die.

Thane is the younger brother of one of the powerful Arkavian families, or Houses. Unlike others of his race (including his brother and father) he is compassionate for the plight of the realms they invade, but it doesn't stop him from his work of plundering Earth's resources.

The magic and intricate world building are densely packed into this story. In fact, I think I would have been happier if the novel had been expanded into a series, drawn out with more time and detail for every encounter, and all the time jumps added back into the mix. But as it is, I can't say that it's "missing" anything. It's a fast-paced tale that gives us all the highlights and important moments, but not too be read too fast or you'll definitely miss something important.

What you can't miss is the undeniable attraction the author paints between the main characters, Taya and Thane. Unwilling for both of them, as they are enemies. And yet there's an irresistible pull between them which makes for entertaining reading. Taya's sarcasm and quirky humor keeps things light and realistic - okay, as realistic as this magical paranormal tale can be. Which is one of the reasons I love this author. Her characters are real and down to earth, making the reader believe in the magic along with everything else.

In short: Loved this book. Wish it was a series instead of a standalone. Need more J.C. McKenzie.

3.5-4 stars. This was a really intriguing read, with a real unique start. Magical apocalypse + aliens + BAMF FMC assassin.. I mean whats not to love about any of these things. I have to say that I'm really disappointed that this isn't a series starter.. It had everything there to set up for a series but then kind of abruptly wrapped everything up at the end. At the end I was really hoping to do some research and find that there are some other sequels or a saga or some companion novels but I haven't found anything yet. Maybe in the future?

We start with our FMC Taya, during a magical apocalypse. A portal has opened and a magical wave comes through and basically incinerates most of the population of earth. As Alien lords come through the portal to round up whoever is left for slavery Taya fights tooth and nail for survival. Attacking the Alien supply carts etc. During one raid everything goes wrong and Taya ends up captured with a choice. Slavery, or 1 year of training with her captor to become the Lord's right hand woman and assassin with the bonus that she will be killing other aliens from the other houses as necessary. Taya makes her choice and learns more and more about the humanoid race that came through the portal, she learns all about their culture and history. When more and more truth surfaces though Taya must end up choosing the life she has been fighting for or the life she has made.

Really rich world here with tons of potential and honestly I feel like we have just barely scratched the surface. I can't help but want to know more. I'm on the holding out side that this author is going to take this farther. Either way this book was really good and totally worth the read.

This standalone fantasy romance is an exhilarating and stunning read that readers can’t put down! The characters are powerfully strong and demand attention from the very beginning and readers won’t be able to get enough as their romance burns slowly getting hotter and hotter which works great for this brilliant and creative world. The story is kind of an alter-realm invasion story that masterfully blends familiar story elements with unique elements in a bubbling cauldron of intensely suspenseful & emotionally gripping events while the setting of which is a sort of a historical world full of magic adds to the ambiance of the story although the story can’t really be labeled as historical because it feels more like a futuristic or apocalyptic setting.

The fast pace ensures that readers never have a chance to become bored and steadily builds adrenaline pumping expectation throughout the story as Taya and Thane strive to uncover the culprit behind a magical conspiracy. While the romance may not be the biggest part of this story, there is an HEA and readers can’t help but be awed by the female heroine, magic filled swords and the gratifying blend of elements that makes a wonderfully entertaining reading experience.

THE NIGHT HOUSE is a standalone post-apocalyptic fantasy romance that seamlessly blends medieval knights and sword-play from a different planet with current day earth.

This was a fantastic read, ticking most of my boxes. Thane and Taya have sparks flying aplenty when they are meet and these continue throughout the book. I loved not only Thane though, but his whole team. They were all strong characters with a strong sense of duty and loyalty. Once Taya was part of their team, that was it. No stupidity or senseless behaviour, just helping the newbie out where possible.

If I could give out half stars, this would be a four and a half! The reason for that half star being knocked off would be the ending. It felt very quick to me, almost as if the author was running out of available words in her word count. Big build-up followed by events happening very quickly and not taking up much page space. Still, I loved this book anyway, so perhaps that's why it seemed to end too quickly!

If you like fantasy and contemporary genres merged together, then I would definitely recommend this book!

The Night House Talk about addictive!! I picked this up and couldn't put it down until the very last tantalizing word. I inhaled this book in one sitting. I'm here, eyes burning from lack of sleep, throat sore from hours of disuse and poor hydration, wishing for more. There was Magic, court intrigue and Action. There was a swoon worthy slow burn. There were minor sexy time moments but mostly there was a need to read on, to live inside this world a moment longer. The world building was great and the character development even better. The pacing was intense and the action fierce. There was a butt kicking, wise ass heroine that you can really get behind and then there's Thane..... oh man is there Thane!! He was Yummmmy with a capital Y! He might have come off as too perfect though because no man can know the most elegantly perfect thing to say at the exact right moment... or at least no man I've met on this side of the pages. I was given a copy of this book but I honestly would have happily bought it. The only things that could have improved the experience were to have it be longer and to have more Thane... MUCH more Thane!!

Over all: I loved it!! I loved every second of this book and wished/craved/needed more! I'm sorry it ended and enjoyed every glorious moment in seclusion, immersed in this world.

I want more!
Everything from the cover, chapter art, characters and plot was great!

Starts out with dystopian vibes, but transforms into parallel magical universe with a crossover. Court intrigue, backstabbing, mystery and a bad ass woman swordsman.

While the book is technically a stand alone, I very much want to hear more. It's definitely left open to to turn into a series, and I think there could be significantly larger roles for some of the characters we get to meet at the end of the book.

So, as a stand alone I rate this 4, but if it were to have turned into a duology or more I'd probably put it at 4.5.

Loved the twists and turns!

This was first published on my blog "Lecture toute une Aventure"

Fabulous!!! This one is on my favourite shelf for sure! It can be dark , there are moment wonderfully written but sad and some right at the beginning but the story is simply great! Taya is caught in a situation not even nightmares could have prepared her for but fortunately for her, her family wasn't like every other so she isn't completely helpless.
Still we see a young girl loosing everything but with a mind strong enough to keep fighting for her life and freedom. I really loved this heroine.

The invaders are not so easy to understand, there are divisions in their world too and some are not as bad as others. Thane is a noble but second son but since the beginning he show some honour...then he act with Taya giving her choice because he does detect something in her but it goes deeper than that. He really understands her and he is a good soul despite the family he has.
That reflect also in his choice of companionship: Axel, Lokni and few others are more like brotherhood than servants and they do include Taya in their rank without consideration of her being female, she is part of their group thus get the same protection as any other from said group.

There are intrigues as we discover the Arkavia world, romance, lot of action as we follow Taya when she is trained then acting as bodyguard. there also have some funny moment.

Really the rhythm is perfect! a real page turner. It's a standalone and we can appreciate that fully as when we finish the book we do have all our answer, we can have a feeling of satisfaction and still we are open to imagine a sequel we don't need it, it probably not be written but we can easily imagine it ourselves.

It's really a " coup de coeur", i recommend it without hesitation

A mysterious blue wave of magic rolls across the earth killing almost everyone. With well-honed fighting skills and survival instincts, Taya stays alive. She learns that warriors have come from another dimension to reap the world of its resources. They are called Arkavians. She calls them, “ … a civilization of good-looking locusts.”
Thane, a member of the royalty in Arkavia, is attracted to Taya’s Arkavian-like features, integrity, and personal power. Using a non-permanent, magical bond he ensures her service for a year as his bodyguard
On the first day of the invasion she promised herself that she would avenge the death of her friends, but as she spends time with Thane her feelings become complicated. “Guilt stabbed at her chest. Guilt for surviving. Guilt for living among the enemy and not trying to slit their necks at every opportunity. Guilt for actually liking the men on Thane’s team and guilt for … guilt for Thane.”
Taya struggles with her feelings as she helps Thane uncover layers of betrayal in his elite society and the true history of the portal connecting their realms.
This book is truly a flashlight-worthy read. J.C. McKenzie pulled me into the story on the first page and never let me go. There’s lots of plot, lots of action and hot romance coiled with emotion. Taya is easy to relate to and Thane is a memorable hero with a heart of gold and a body of steel. While the fight scenes are detailed and emotion-driven, McKenzie’s trademark humor lightens the darkness to create a well-balanced tone of adventure, love, and fantasy.
I highly recommend this book for readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic stories, or paranormal romance.

Taya is the only survivor in her group when the Blue Wave hits and she watches her friends disappear right in front of her. She swore vengeance. Now she just has to figure out what happened, why it's happening and make the bad guys pay.

But there are men on horseback wearing armor and rounding up survivors. She'll need all the skills she ever learned just to live. And there is more involved with the men on horseback than she can ever imagine and when she is captured and taken with them she uses this as a way to continue getting her revenge.

But she's more than a prisoner and she'll find there is more to the disappearance of her friends that she can ever imagine and she's an integral part of the whole story.

Great book. I was waiting eagerly for it and it did not disappoint. There is action and romance and sword fights and evil wizards - yes it all works. I was going to read half one evening and the other half the next night - unfortunately, I was unable to put it down. I did try---I put it down and turned off the lights and 10 minutes later I was reading" just one more chapter" until it was finished. My recommendation is don't miss this book, it's a ton of fun, but plan enough time to read it in one setting. (I voluntarily reviewed an ARC).

I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you!
This novel was an enjoyable read. It was different from other novels I had read. The plot was rather unexpected, which made the novel all the better. Taya is camping with her friends when something happens that only leaves her alive. She promises vengeance on those who killed her friends, Arkavia. Taya survives in hopes to get back to her family when she meets Lord Thane who was sent to kill her. Thane has a different interest in Taya. He gives her a choice, be a slave or become his assassin. She will learn to develop her magical abilities and become a better fighter than she already is. Taya begins to fall in love with Thane, especially since they have this “bond” between them. Thane has a difficult past, but sees something in Taya that he cannot give up. We see how Taya develops throughout the story, which leads to more about her family history and the involvement in the current leeching of the earth by the Arkavians. Thane and Taya both come to realizations and it has an impact on their growing relationship. A highly recommended novel to read.

Honestly, this is a solid 4/5 stars.

Why is this listed as horror? No idea, but I definitely wouldn't classify it as such.

What I can say is that this does have a kickass female lead who has to learn to weild power magic and some pretty sick weapons.

If you had to choose to become a slave or assassian for an overlord, what would you choose? I sure as hell would choose assassain, and that's exactly what Taya does. This mixes some very interesting genres, like medival, distopian, epic fantasy, and also dark fantasy unsurprisingly. It does it all very well, and it pairs nicely with the fast pacing of the plot. Also, the romance is very heavy in this book, but it doesn't overshadow Taya's growth as a powerful assassain and her mission. I thought it was really well done and a fun read! Kinda wish there was more of a buildup in the beginning when Taya must make a decision, but honestly it doesn't bother me much.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was provided an ARC for review of this story.

Wow. This was so different, at least to me, from J. C. McKenzie's other books. I loved it .

I enjoyed being drawn into Taya and Thane's world. The story drew me in immediately and kept me riveted to see where the story line would take me. In moving from one chapter to another, sometimes the author alludes to "by chapter title" and opening sentence a specified period of time having past. I found that I didn't miss or wonder "what happened during this time period". I'd say it was a seamless transition and there were enough metaphors or hits from proceeding chapters to allude to events that might have occurred; i.e. like when John and Taya met up and how immediately it became apparent that "trust" would be a factor between them. Action, adventure, mystery and a little love....All working well together in this story.

Well done J.C. I will continue to keep you my list of authors to read.

Well Done

These five stars should be ten.
This is incredible. I don’t even know how to describe what I just read. I haven’t been enthralled with a book this much in a long time.
Have you ever been so into a story you resent your family for wanting your attention? It’s a good thing I read fast or they might have starved. I found myself standing up and walking around the room occasionally to catch my breath, though. The story hits that hard and fast. Just when you think it may slow down a little—bam—something else happens.
Scene setting? You can smell the smoke from the campfires and shiver from the wind and snow.
Character development? Absolutely. The main characters, Thane and Taya help each other grow and expand farther than the magnificent people they are in the beginning.
Story flow? It flows like a swollen river and you struggle to keep your head above water for the next chapter.
This book has it all—Murder, mayhem, magic, and romance. In a nut-shell…I’m blown away.

This book was awesome! I’m enjoying fantasy more and more with each book I read! I really enjoy how it starts in todays age in time, then when the portal opens it’s almost like a trip back in time!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved the main character, she is a badass and an amazing sword fighter! Or stick fighter I should say 🤣 Thane is a big badass warrior and honestly, how can you not have a huge lady bonder for him?!

This is a stand alone romance, it’s slow burn, I found it not spicy, it heats up towards the end… if there ends up being anymore I could see the story getting more into the spice. But this story line worked without the spice and I was okay with that!

I wouldn’t say it’s a super dark fantasy but there is minor gore and because there is some… unique body placement methods (don’t want to give anything away, haha) i give it 2.5/5 in the dark department!

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley.

This was my first read from J.C. McKenzie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It includes a kick-ass heroine, a swoon-worthy book boyfriend (who is not an awful alpha-male type), political intrigue, and awesome fight scenes. I really enjoyed reading about Taya and her journey after an apocalyptic attack. Though this is promoted as a stand-alone, I hope we get to see more of this world and the group we were introduced to. Until then, I'm off to go check out her other books!

As as genre, there is a little bit of everything: dystopian post-apocalypse, sci-fi, a little urban fantasy feel, and romance. And it works!

Delving into an alternate realm that has opened a portal to plunder earth, Taya is taken by a lord of the realm. Her life in the balance, she vows to avenge the deaths on earth even as she trains with her captors. I liked this world, the protagonist was spot on bad ass, very satisfying ending. Lots of action, good mystery. Recommend it to lovers of the genre. I voluntarily reviewed an arc of this book.
