Amber Buckner #1

Collateral Damage

Rate this book
A thrilling tale of revenge, kidnapping, and a serial killer. For fans of Lisa Regan, Michael Connelly, and Tess Gerritsen

Trapped with a killer…

Amber Buckner has problems. She’s dealing with her husband’s ultimatum over an unplanned pregnancy. Then, while leaving work she gets kidnapped by an armed lunatic. The psycho takes her to an underground bunker he’d pre-staged for her arrival. She learns her abductor is starved for love—and what affection he doesn’t receive willingly, he takes forcefully. To stay alive, Amber keeps her wits and convinces her captor that he is the father of the child she’s carrying. As the days go by, the maniac fluctuates between love and hate for his captive. Forced to flee the bunker, he and Amber are on the run. She tries to stay one step ahead of her kidnapper until her husband, an LAPD cop, can rescue her. What Amber doesn’t know, is that her husband isn’t looking for her—no one is—the psycho has seen to that.

A disgraced cop seeking revenge…

Seth Farley always dreamed of being a cop. It wasn’t Seth’s fault he screwed up and almost got himself and his training officer, Roy Buckner, killed. All the training officers who’d called him arrogant and untrainable were wrong. It was a conspiracy against him. And now they’d all pay, especially Roy. It was his fault Seth got fired. Roy destroyed Seth’s dreams. And now Seth will destroy Roy’s life, by kidnapping the woman he loves.

From an underground bunker in the Mojave Desert, to a log cabin in Big Bear Lake, Amber is trapped with a killer. Does Amber have the courage and savvy to escape before she and her baby end up as collateral damage in Seth’s plot to exact his twisted vengeance?

Roy Buckner and Amber his wife have had a great marriage going on. That is until Amber becomes pregnant. That is the one thing that Roy did not want. When Roy's friends are over to watch a football game, he finds out about Amber being pregnant and voices his opinion rather loudly. They talk about some of their fellow 'brothers" who have deceased recently. One in a hunting accident and another 'ate his piece'. Little did they know that those were not accidents or a suicide. One of Roy's friends gets killed leaving Roy's house. This was no accident. Then Amber gets kidnapped by the killer who Roy and his friend know.....they just don't know it now. This is a very gripping story about how some people perceive themselves and lay the blame everywhere but on themselves. You can feel the emotions going through Roy and Amber as they both try to do what they need to do. Amber...get away from her kidnapper. Roy...find Amber and kill the kidnapper. Things do not go as planned and things get rather intense in this story. This is not anything like the Maddie Divine series Kathy has written in the past. I read it in 2 days! I didn't want to stop reading it, I had to see what was going to happen next and to who. Excellent job! Highly recommend if you like police procedurals and a book with a lot of action going on in it.

Fast pace and Suspenseful

Always love a fast pace suspenseful book, and this one did not disappoint. Rejected for your dream job? Can revenge be the answer to Seth’s happily ever after? The further in the more I kept asking; whose side are you on anyway? Take the time to read and find out. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow! What a story! I was about 40% into the book and expected to read a chapter or 2 and go to sleep cause I was exhausted.... Well, that didn't work! I ended up staying up most of the night reading and finishing the book! It was that good! It was exciting, suspenseful and extremely riveting! It was well written, the characters were well developed and the story draws you in from the beginning... Without details, the book was about an LAPD rookie with revenge on the agenda! Kathy Bennett is a retired LAPD Officer and writes from experience and knowledge. I highly recommend this book and look forward to her next one!

Kathy Bennett is a retired police officer from LAPD and her next chapter in life is that of an author. I am also a retired police officer. I served 31 yrs before my retirement. I am critical about police novels. They have to be believable.
Kathy Bennett's Collateral Damage is an outstanding novel. This book was about a recruit that slipped through the hiring process and the academy with LAPD.
The officer was terminated and blamed others, similar to Christopher Dorner.
Bennett brings in many interesting characters and intriguing subplots take place.
The conclusion is fantastic.
I believe this book is Bennett's best.

Kudos, Kathy Bennett, for a job well done! I was riveted from the first page to the last. Bennett takes readers on a rollercoaster with this first in the series story. The plot is complex, the characters believable, frighteningly so in some cases, and the action will keep you on the edge of your seat. Hang on to the safety bar! This is one exciting ride!

All Kathy Bennett's novels have the gritty realism you expect from an ex-LAPD officer turned author, but this latest book is possibly her best so far. This story of a disgraced officer out for revenge against his supervisors has realistic characters, a few good twists, and plenty of action. Loved it.
