After a bit of a slow start I really warmed to all the characters in 'Reading upside down'. The book surprised me at just how easy it was to read and the characters kept me hooked. The writing was funny, the romance was believable and I'd read more by Jo Platt again.

Definitely a book that I would recommend.

Enjoyable, light-hearted and funny story. Described as 'chick-wit', which is a good description. I enjoyed the characters and the humour.
''Abandoned without explanation at the altar, 30 year-old Rosalind Shaw descends into the kind of depression which involves her watching too much daytime TV and not bothering to shower as regularly as her mother would like. After several inebriated, unwashed, months, Ros relocates from London to St Albans and begins a new life, as part-owner of an antiquarian b

I'm a bit of a fan of this genre (does it matter that a bloke?).. And this one is up there with the best of them. For a first novel it's excellent... In fact it would be excellent even if it were her 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.
Funny, well written and in parts, poignant. Well worth the read.

What a fantastic chick lit it made me laugh and cry although it was a bit obvious that she would end up with the right man. Although the journey there was great

I was pleasantly surprised and indeed impressed with Platt’s novel which was genuinely funny with dialogue written in a refreshingly natural style – so often I find first-time writers try too hard, but not here. The novel is 90% dialogue and 10% description which is exactly the right measure for the pace and mood required for the usual chick-lit quick-fix too, allowing the likeable characters to speak for themselves without necessitating too much readerly interpretation.

Simply put, it tells the

This book was amazingly funny... though you won't think so in the first few chapters. But once the story gets going, Roz is a quirky, funny lady that has seriously hilarious stuff just happen to her. I was laughing out loud so many times my husband started asking me to read them out loud to him. If you've read the synopsis - then you know the basics of the story line. But it's how Ms. Platt has woven the other characters of the story together that have made it a fabulous read! Well worth the tim ...more

I was desperately in need of a good laugh and a good read and this supplied both. A delightfully funny yet also rather poignant story, with great characters. I like the writer's style and the fact that there were no 'in your face' SPaG errors (at least I didn't spot any!)

A definite re-read at some stage in the future, and that makes it 4 stars in my book.

Quite good fun. Predictable but light and engaging. Worth a read when you need a break from doom and gloom, or heavy historical fiction!!

Really well written, laugh out loud on several occasions, fun and pacy. I really enjoyed this.
Ros, despite starting as a depressed and maudlin whinger, went on to win my support and empathy. I liked the characters around her and the back story as it emerged too.

I adored this gorgoeus love story from Jo Platt. Platt's voice is as smooth as silk and her quirky cast of characters endearing. She takes you on a journey with Ros that's genuine and relatable, and provides you with a swoon worthy hero in the guinea pig killing, Daniel. ...more

Remind me not to read another chicklit! I found this slow paced, stupid and boring. The main character was not endearing but pathetic and oh, so irritating!

I've had this on my Kindle for such a long time and it's turned out to be so funny!
After being left at the alter, Rosalind has a tough time getting back on her feet and putting her experience behind her. I liked how the topic was dealt with a light touch, being humorous and realistic.
Poor Ros was so oblivious when it came to her neighbour Daniel, but the relationships she develops with her co-workers are really sweet and everything seemed to be fleshed out enough to seem plausible and have you

Ros is not in a good place when we meet her. Not only did her fiance jilt her at the church, but her "came with the house" guinea pig, Mr Edward, has been killed in a rather unfortunate gardening accident.

I loved this book. I loved the characters (Ros has some great friends), I loved the lack of any major nastiness (jilting, pet death & a little unfaithfulness aside) and I loved the gentle humour that punctuates the narrative and dialogue.

This is the first book I've read by this author and I'l

Fabulous Read!

I'm a sucker for anything involving a guinea pig, seemingly even a story where one has met a sticky demise.

Jo Platt's Reading Upside Down doesn't disappoint from its first to its last page. Her characters are entirely human and have their faults and foibles, and there are lots of thoroughly entertaining story arcs for her cast of characters. I'm pleased too, to have found a new 'go to' author.

Solid 4.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book. It follows Ros, who has had an event in her life which has plunged her into depression. This story doesn’t dwell on the active depression but does, I think, portray how something like this can affect others around you as well.

I very much enjoyed Ros’ story out of depression. This book has some genuinely laugh out loud moments. It one that I will re-read for sure.

i'm not usually drawn to romances but i'm glad that the brazilian cover of Reading Upside Down caught my eye a while ago and i finally decided i was ready to read a everyone-is-happy-in-the-end kind of story. i laughed so much and fell in love with every single carismatic character made up by Mrs Platt. it really was a lovely story. i mean hell, i wish i could work at Chapters with Ros, Andrew, George and Joan! hahaha what a shame that's not a real bookshop! ...more

Oh my lord, how annoying! I threw in the towel at the end of chapter 2. The overly long sentences full of unnecessarily long and pretentious words make this book extremely unfunny and not at all "feel good". It reads like the recommendation letter Joey wrote for Monica and Chandler's adoption agency where he used a thesaurus for every single word. Only here it isn't funny at all. ...more

A romance about a young woman who struggles to get grip on her life after she is stood up on her wedding day. I enjoyed it for the warm supportive family ties and the happy ending. Even though the characters were a bit stereotypical.

Decent reading. Laughed out loud quite a lot. Nothing particularly special here though, just a really solid rom com with good characters, friendly prose, decent pacing, and a bunch of laughs. Would recommend to anyone who likes the genre.
