This book started slowly and introduced the magic gradually throughout the story. The magic itself had an interesting spin on it, coming from Africa and tradition. I didn't see the ending coming and now I need the second book! ...more

Set in Johannesburg which is a refreshing change to the usual urban fantasy, diverse characters and high stakes, exactly what you expect from a book it of Africa.

A unique take on magic in a setting that one wouldn't think to use it.

The urban fantasy and the race through the pages was enough to earn this four stars. Add the flavour of Millen's intimate knowledge of the setting, and the book comes to life with some hard-boiled characters and a lot of quirk.
