There’s a short preface that tells us this story is not set anywhere in particular. But we can imagine that it is in Spain just at the end of the Spanish Civil war. Or, since it is translated from the Italian, we might imagine that it is fighting among the partisans in Italy during WW II.

In any case, the theme is the cruelty of war and how people attempt to justify the killings. We have multiple layers of moral dilemmas and moral complexity. A man justifies the atrocities of war saying that he

This was a really weird read for sure. I was fairly confused in the first thirty or so pages since I wasn't sure about the reason for all the action (If you've read it you know what I'm talking about) and (view spoiler) The writing was fairly simple to read and I got through pages pret

Perfect! Perfect story, perfect storytelling! Baricco's short novel "Without Blood" is like a song. His words flow like musical notes that form a haunting melody, destined to stay with you long after you've turned the last page.
Simply and poetically amazing!

Alessandro Baricco is a storytelling poet. His words are honey for the mind. To say much of this slim novel would be to cheat future readers from experiencing what I just experienced. My heart is broken. My mind is vitalized. My soul feels as if it has been twisted. Ultimately, Baricco asks and answers a simple question (with a very complex answer): Can a person have revenge without shedding blood?

According to Isaiah Berlin's famous typology, Baricco is a 'hedgehog' writer. In his work, he doggedly continues to explore the large variety of strategies deployed by human beings to deal with the predicament of being thrown into a chaotic and unfathomable world. We tell stories, create art, measure and quantify, play games and develop rituals. All this frenetic activity constitutes a 'symbolic' realm that is as vital for people to live together on this Earth as the air they breathe. The master ...more

An unusual novella by the author of SILK, which I thought was considerably better than this effort, but nevertheless this was pretty good story too. I was expecting, as I got into it, something on the order of a literary "Kill Bill," but alas it turned into something quite different. Baricco has a melancholy streak in him, I think. And he likes those little twists, but this short story lacked the musicality I found in SILK; I will have to read some more of his work to see if it was an aberration ...more

Найбільш ...more

Recommends it for: Lovers of short fiction, at least those who haven't yet read every other war story under the sun.
(Written on February 1st, 2016. Slightly edited on April 5th of the same year.)

An indulgence in the life of a non-reading reader. I both thoroughly enjoyed and envied Baricco's writing ability; his construction of sentences, characters, and scenes is superb, and woven together they are magic. A perfect package.

Perhaps a little too perfect, even, and I say that because of no more than one or two sentences - the story maybe loses just a touch of its edge at the end, at least for readers like me wh

A neat novella in 2 parts. The first part describes a violent reckoning in a somewhat western-style setting; very cinematic flavor, economical style. The second part, 60 years later, brings two main characters together again in a dialogue that illustrates how divergent perceptions can be, and how powerful vengeance is as a life force. The end is a bit predictable but nevertheless nice. Literary almost perfect, this is a cool short story.

Well, this took an hour to read, very short, 97 pages, more like a short story...

It moves along at lightning speed, Baricco interweaves philosophical musings on war, violence, politics, the nature of truth, etc., as the story moves apace...

The book begins with a straightforward account of a traumatic moment of wartime, actually a scene occurring after the war is over. The war is not specified, but it's obviously WWII and the place is Italy. Vengeance seekers from the winning side are after a doc
