I read a digital copy of this book.
In an effort to learn more about the adolla bursts and the evangelist's plan, several soldiers from the fire force are sent to China to research a burst of adolla actively inland from where humans are usually based. They have to travel through an area infested with infernals, however, these infernals seem different from the ones in Tokyo. Sadder, immortal, linked to the land through an unknown cause. Shinra and co come across talking animals, a lush forest and weirdly enough, a power plant identical to their own right in the middle of the forest. The power plant is being controlled by a gang who seem to be in search of a series of slabs with numbers on them: the numbers of pi. However, what relevance this is, we don't know. They find out a woman, a human being, is powering the plant and maintaining the forest and after their fight with the gang of horned infernals, they conclude the same must be true for their plant meaning the scriptures are wrong and the Empire is built on a lie.
Things are getting GOOD besties. Finally, the plot is picking up traction, things seem to be moving the right way, and the story is progressing well. It's interesting to see Shinra's powers grow and I loved getting some moments with Arthur being super-intelligent in this book. I still don't trust Licht but I wonder what his role will be as the story continues.
