WELCOME TO THE OASIS Shinra and the other soldiers working Operation Chinese Landing have arrived at the Oasis, a mysterious forest thriving in the middle of a barren wasteland. But what’s even more surprising than the talking animals that live there is the edifice at its center–a power plant identical to the miracle machine that provides energy for the Tokyo Empire. Can the team find out the secrets of this Tabernacle before the Infernal invaders destroy the whole forest?

OHKUBO Atsushi

Atsushi Ōkubo ( 大久保篤), also romanized as Atsushi Ohkubo, is a Japanese manga author and fantasy artist known for his work on the manga series Soul Eater, which has been adapted into an anime. Okubo worked as an assistant under Rando Ayamine, on the manga series Get Backers. He also created artwork for various cards for the Lord of Vermillion game.

Atsushi Ōkubo was not a model student and was more attracted to drawing than to learning. At the age of 20, after finishing studies at a manga school where he met Rando Ayamine, the author of Get Backers, he became Rando Ayamine's assistant for two years. Finally, he won a competition at Square Enix's Gangan magazine with his first manga series B.Ichi and it was published for four volumes. After the end of his last manga, he created Soul Eater, still for Square Enix's Gangan magazine, which brought him worldwide success.

Re-read because I completely forgot what happened during this arc. Did not remember that there were talking animals either lol.

It's also funny when I fall so far behind that the translated version is already out. 😅

Still enjoying this series.

I read a digital copy of this book.

In an effort to learn more about the adolla bursts and the evangelist's plan, several soldiers from the fire force are sent to China to research a burst of adolla actively inland from where humans are usually based. They have to travel through an area infested with infernals, however, these infernals seem different from the ones in Tokyo. Sadder, immortal, linked to the land through an unknown cause. Shinra and co come across talking animals, a lush forest and weirdly enough, a power plant identical to their own right in the middle of the forest. The power plant is being controlled by a gang who seem to be in search of a series of slabs with numbers on them: the numbers of pi. However, what relevance this is, we don't know. They find out a woman, a human being, is powering the plant and maintaining the forest and after their fight with the gang of horned infernals, they conclude the same must be true for their plant meaning the scriptures are wrong and the Empire is built on a lie.

Things are getting GOOD besties. Finally, the plot is picking up traction, things seem to be moving the right way, and the story is progressing well. It's interesting to see Shinra's powers grow and I loved getting some moments with Arthur being super-intelligent in this book. I still don't trust Licht but I wonder what his role will be as the story continues.

Read as part of Omnibus Vol 5.

I swear I wrote this review already....
Volume 14 is a fairly solid collection and the story just flows along nicely. The expedition finds a bunch of hopefully useful information including an abandoned copy of Amaterasu the power sources of the Japanese Empire. The group encounters thinking infernals and there is a long fight. In the end Shinra defeats the Demon Infernal with the help of an adola link to the women inside the power plant. The lady seems to be the opposite of the Evangelist. The journey back to Japan happens in less than a page. There are reaction scenes and a bit of outrage and then end.

sometimes you win some, sometimes you lose some, and sometimes you find out that the religious organization you’ve been following your entire life lied and is making human sacrifices to the large nuclear plant that’s running your country after a shower of flames has cleansed the earth as you knew it. 👍🏻

Get some answers but get alot more questions.

This was a decent volume. Some great fighting moments, few cool answer to things, but it feels like the "mystery" of it all is dragging on now. I might drop this series for awhile if next volume doesn't pick up.

4/5 Stars (%80/100)

Welcome to the Chinese Peninsula! We have talking animals, thousands of infernals, a cult of sentient infernals, a mysterious building, the Tabernacle, that looks exactly like Amaterasu, and many other things. It was a lot to take in but I really liked it, especially the part with Shinra and the Woman in Black. It was also very funny that Arthur was the one who thought of Pi instead of Licht. After learning a lot of things about Amaterasu, Tokyo, Holy Sol Temple and the Evangelist, our characters are ready to head back and finally face the Church.

We get through a lot in this volume. There's the Amaterasu that's in the middle of nowhere; the secret of the talking animals; a demon infernal that can talk; and the biggest secret of the entire series. If this series wasn't dark enough, it just got darker.

This series has 34 volumes.

Grupa bohaterów będzie miała tutaj sporo miejsca do pokazania swoich możliwości i zdolności.

Talking animals, animal like structures, and voices from an Amaterasu were fantastical yet real. Surprisingly, our lead characters embraced that which they saw for what it was worth and believed it wholly and fully. By getting right into the thick of things, the situation grew compelling fast. Most importantly, the glimpse into the history of the world and insight into who or what the evangelist is was vastly intriguing. Questions remain as to the nature of the things that we learned, however what we can truly say is a sad, truly tragic, fate awaits those who are identified as the pillars.

For Vulcan and Amaterasu as a whole, the implication that Amaterasu is actually this nefarious entity is soul shaking and bone rattling. I can only imagine for him as well as for the usual suspects like Shinra getting to the bottom of this will be quite important. Along those lines, I wonder what role Arthur and the other members of company 8 play in the upcoming arts beyond simply supporting Shinra and backing firepower to take on Hajima (who most likely want to ensure the plan is a success).

Overall a great volume and it remains constantly intriguing that Shinra is capable of using his faster than light abilities to take on enemies without suffering side effects. I kind of wish there was some side effect in place for him just so he doesn’t spam it again like he did before, like maybe make it where each time there are noticeable harmful effects to the point that he may never use it again in the future. Just entertaining the idea.

Not quite as thrilling or Earth shaking as the last volume (till the end) but it reinforces what came before, and was a nice kind of palate cleanser. It also deepened the core mystery of the series, adding in darker elements reminiscent of Akira and lighter elements reminding me a bit of early Dragonball. It’s an odd mix, but it works, and definitely was a nice short arc that felt different from the few before it.

This volume contains Chapters 115-123.

This volume concludes the China story arc. There are talking animals, thousands of flame people, flame dogs, a talking flame demon, and a dark lady!

The mission objective to gather information about the Evangelist and adolla bursts, as well as what caused the great cataclysm 250 years ago, is achieved. As usual, the more information gleaned, the more questions arise.

FINALLY SOME ANSWERS! But what an entertaining volume. We got to see some side characters take action and do some cool things, we learned who Amaterasu is and we see Shinra be a hero to some small forest animals. I really enjoyed this volume and that end page has me excited for the fight in the next volume.

Ohkubo has an interesting view of religion and corruption. This shift in the story gives readers an opportunity to learn more about the Ohkubo’s world and Iris, who is already becoming doubtful of the faith she devoted her life to.

This volume finally picked up the pace and provided more insight into the adolla bursts and the pillars. But things don't look too good according to what the gang has learned. Hopefully the pacing will continue and that there are no more "fillers".

I’m very engaged with it, however this volume had a lot of information to process and I don’t if processed everything or not. The highlight for me was Ogu’s fight, love this character.
