Allie Callas has a normal-ish job: she’s the owner and sole employee of Finders Keepers, a service dedicated to the time-consuming task of finding (and finding out) things on the tiny Greek island of Merope. The fact that she’s been seeing the dead ever since she can remember is incidental. It’s nothing more than a … a … a birthmark on her soul and a pain in her butt.

Except now death is getting personal and the dead are getting bossy. Her best friend (and neighbor) has been murdered, and her ghost is back to tell Allie that the events leading up to her death are hazy (very unhelpful), and that she wants Allie to figure out whodunit.

Allie isn’t a cop, but the wall-banging, hump-happy Detective Leo Samaras is just one floor away. Does he want her help? Nooo … But he wouldn’t mind taking a good, hard look at her bedroom.

With the dead starting to make unreasonable demands on her time, can Allie figure out who killed her friend, without taking a one-way trip to the grave herself? Will she start cursing the day she started seeing ghosts? And where did the hefty ghost cat that has moved into her apartment come from anyway?

FAMILY GHOULS is the first book in the Greek Ghouls series: a comedic mystery set in Greece and steeped in ouzo.

Man, this made me so homesick! It was like being back home(minus the murder). I don't know where you are Alex A. King but I could kiss you! For me this was literally a slice of island life back home and I loved it. And damn was it entertaining reading Greek insults and swear words. For Greek/Cypriot ex-pats like me it was hella fun!

Allie can see ghosts and she capitalises on it. If you need something found, you call her. If you have supernatural assistance you can find pretty much everything can't you? That's what Allie thought until her neighbour and friend got murdered and promptly proceeded to haunt her until she found who did it. It's not easy living and working on a small island where everyone thinks you are a whackadoodle who talks to herself but Allie handles it with aplomb and sarcasm. For me it was equally hilarious and intriguing. It left me wanting more of Allie and her world. And her love interest too.

If you're in the mood for a supernatural whodunit in an island setting pick it up!

Stin ygeia sou Alex! Eviva!
Cheers!

This was a cute little cozy mystery. I loved all the ghosts but the cat ghost was definitely my favorite. The mystery wasn't too easy to solve so I liked that. The Greek phrases were a nice touch as well. Overall, a nice fun mystery.

A cozy that has a bit of it all. Humor, mystery, paranormal, and romance. Allie sees dead people. She lives on an island near Greece. When her friend and neighbor dies, she insists Allie find out who killed her. Which brings in all kinds of zany characters including the handsome cop upstairs. Not to mention the dead cat that has taken up residence. A very enjoyable read.

Laugh out loud funny 😉

It’s strange. I’ve had this book sitting on my iPad for nearly a year, but for some reason every time I read the synopsis I just moved on to another book. I wish I could go back and kick myself because this book was so good that I’m mad it took me so long to read it.

The characters were funny, quirky, flawed and had quite the potty mouth at times. There were rivalries, obnoxious clients, perverts and a whole host of horrible relatives (Olga’s family), that they make the Simpsons seem like the Brady Bunch. The murder mystery was well thought out and included a few red herrings that had me second guessing who did it. The biggest draw originally was the location. Being set on a Greek Island was a breathe of fresh air after a mountain of cosy mysteries set almost exclusively in England or America. It was an eye opener, and yet strangely familiar (if you have been exposed to Greek communities).

I am definitely going to be picking up the next book as I had so much fun reading this.

2020 bk 305. A change of pace from historical mysteries. American born, but Greek resident, Allie Callas has a job on the island of Merope. She operates Finders Keepers, a service that will find your lost glasses, locate your long lost boyfriends, or, in the case of her deceased neighbor, find a murderer. Of course, it would help if the client for the last were actually alive and could pay her. However Olga was a firm friend, and mad enough about being murdered that she didn't wait the customary 4 months and reappeared to Allie the evening of her murder. Along the way, Olga reveals family details, tries to hook Allie up with a police officer, and commandeers Allie's tv to watch her favorite shows. Allie, on the other hand, is the victim of what seems to be small pranks or accidents, until those accidents escalate. A fun mystery that kept me from doing any serious work today! I'm looking forward to number #2 of the series. Warning - lots of 'not so appropriate behavior' and I think I may be glad that I don't speak modern Greek.

A beautiful Grecian island, a bunch of ghosts, an intriguing mystery - can't ask for much more than that.

While it's fair to say that you will pick up one or two Greek profanities and potentially some American ones, too, most of the steamier action took place off-screen. Indeed, if cursing really doesn't appeal to you, this probably isn't the book for you. For the most part, however, Family Ghouls was a fun read. There was a caustic relationship between a couple of the characters that seemed a shade juvenile and almost unfathomable as to its origin Other than that, I enjoyed meeting the main character and becoming a part of her world.

Emotional Roller Coaster

This book has almost everything. Many hysterically funny parts. Genuine sadness. Mysteries that are almost too complicated. And oh, the motive(s)! The editing is inconsistent. Too many Greek words and phrases are not explained. And i got lost in the quite similar names, so lost that i will never be able to understand the solution completely. I definitely will read more of this series; I simply hope that the next books will be a bit more polished. Especially, please, find a sharper proofreader. Thank you

Very good cozy

Set in a village in Greece, complete with Greek names for the quirky characters. That was the only downfall in reading this very strong and fun cozy.

4.25*

I was introduced to this author (Alex King) in her Kat Makris/Greek Mafia series and I fell in love. Her writing style is always fun and engaging and I often have laugh-out-loud and caught-off-guard moments that I adore. Although I tend to approach the supernatural realm with caution, because Alex King’s name was stamped on the series, I decided to give it a try. And boy am I glad I did!

The humor, wit, and sarcastic quips are what made me fall in love with her first series and I was not disappointed with more of the same in this novel. Her characters easily get under your skin for their strong-willed, trouble-following, smart-mouthed, and often funny escapades and interactions with others. Her books are very character-driven, which makes them so relatable and believable that you can’t help but like them. Plus, the dialogue between characters is something Alex King does very, very well.

Allie and Leo make quite a pair and both race to find out who killed Allie’s friend and neighbor, Olga. Along the way, more murder plots unfold and it becomes a race to find the answers to more than one mystery. From Allie (our leading lady) to the fat cat, the array of characters were charming, amusing and enjoyable.

But it doesn’t stop at the characters themselves. The ‘whodunit’ mystery was also a nice way to bring characters together (in conflict or romance) and, while it was slightly convoluted, was still a nice plot that helped to send our characters on some grand (or not so grand - ) and dangerous adventures.

This is a perfect book to curl up with when you’re in the mood for something light, entertaining, and fun. I seem to wiz through each and every story I read from this author. Family Ghouls is light on a lot of depth but Kings’ books always make up for it with an abundance of enjoyable entertainment.

There were a lot of Greek phrases and slang thrown in, but most of the time, our author did a wonderful job giving us non-Greek folk (like me) the translations or explanations (although I admit that my background with the authors aforementioned series helped me with this as well and I was seeing some overlap in expressions or word choices).

However, I will admit that one of the things I’ve complained about repeatedly in King’s Greek Mafia series are the repeated editing errors and mistakes. Unfortunately, this has followed her in her first Greek Ghouls story. The editing errors were all fairly simple mistakes and could have been caught with a good proofreader but, as I’m finding is typical, either King doesn’t invest in editing or she needs to hire someone new. This always factors in to my rating because it can be so distracting and frustrating (especially since it’s a repeated offense) so again, I wish this was something that she made a bigger priority. Her stories would be that much better!

Nevertheless, this was a fantastic story and I can’t wait to read book 2!

The story was fun to read and as Greek I could relate in many of the small town clichés, though the Greek swearing wording, full of typos was disturbing a lot and ruined the reading for me. Without those that could be a 4 star reading.

Family Ghouls, A Greek Ghouls Mystery, Book #1
by Alex A. King

I follow King's Kat Makris/Greek Mafia series and love it, so I decided to give this series a try, too. I'm notorious for not liking other series by an author I follow in one series, probably because I try to put too much of the series I like into the new series and that's hardly fair, so I don't often try. However, I will say that there is definitely one thing that this series shares with the Kat Makris series: Alex King needs to find a decent proofreader.

Now, don't get me wrong. I loved this little paranormal story. But, oof, the proofreading errors! King is not Samuel L. Jackson, who can say "The fk do I care." and have everyone understand there is a silent "What" at the beginning of the sentence. So, when she writes, at 1471 on my Kindle, "I would pay to see the looks on their faces when you ask if strangled me." the reader doesn't know if there is simply a "they" missing, or if perhaps there are more words, perhaps "one of them," missing from the sentence. Between misspelled words and missing words there were at least 8 errors in this novel, and that's just what I found and I'm not a great proofreader.

So, I loved the characters. They were quirky and funny and pathetic and outrageous. The dialogue was fun and believable. The situations were believable, even the paranormal situations. There were plenty of twists and turns and red herrings to the really good mystery. There was enough romance to be interesting and not so much as to be eye-rolling. There was honest humor were appropriate and honest sorrow, too. The plotting and pacing were excellent. There was no cliffhanger ending, but I still want to jump right into Book #2.

So, yes, I'm following this series. Alex A. King -- if you are out there, reading this -- I know of at least 3 series that you write: Kat Makris/Greek Mafia, Greek Ghouls, and Women of Greece. So I know you are an experienced writer. Do youself and your readers a favor and hire a decent proofreader, stat.

I started this book some time ago and stopped because I just couldn't get into it. The second time I tried, I still wasn't sure I was going to stick with it because it was just trying too hard to be snarky-funny. And I really get annoyed with books where the main characters eat out all the time and yet every eating place in their town is terrible.

I have to admit, though, that after the first couple of chapters, I really started to get into both the characters and the mystery, and the humour didn't seemed to be forced--once I knew the characters better, it was just them. And before too much longer, it just grabbed my attention. The mystery (well, both of them) was well-done. It didn't have missing information that made the solution completely out of left-field, and at the same time revealed the clues in a logical but not obvious way. And there's a ghost cat, so, bonus.

I ended up really liking this book (although I did take off a star because of the really slow start) and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. I'm still annoyed about the bad restaurants, though.

I don't do book reviews like you keep seeing, as I find that some give too much of the plot away and I personally hate that, as it makes the book not worth reading. I much prefer to take the authors back cover write up as a review as it can either intrigue you enough to read the book of provide you enough information to make you decide that the book is not for you.
My review rules are: The more stars, the more I liked it.
If there are too many typos or errors the less stars I give
If the storyline or plot is poor or contains too many errors, the characters are too weak, the ending lacking something, then the less stars I give.
Simple, uncomplicated and to the point without giving anything away.
Some of the books I read have been given to me by the author as a pre-release copy and this does not bias my reviews in any way

I liked it. Frankly, from the description, I had my doubts whether I wanted to bother reading. If whoever wrote the description read the book, then they took some creative liberties in the synapsis - the "best friend" is an elderly neighbor and she has at least one other good friend so I'm not sure I'd call her the best friend, the banging from the detective's apartment is discovered pretty early to be coming from the treadmill and not a different acrobatic activity; the cop actually says he appreciates her input because of budget cuts (okay, yes, something the police in reality have probably never said) and although he's a love interest, he he's not smarmy as he's portrayed in the description.

It was a fun book. Good writing. Probably will read the other two in the series (Kindle Unlimited).

Bought the Kindle (free).

🧿 Book Review: Family Ghouls (Greek Ghoul Mystery #1) by Alex A. King
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4/5 stars)

This quick, quirky read was the perfect travel companion—I started Family Ghouls while in Greece, and now that I’m home, I’m itching to dive into the rest of the series. Alex A. King’s writing style is effortlessly engaging, with humour that sparkles like sunlight on the Aegean.

The story follows a main character who can see dead people, and that supernatural twist adds just the right amount of spooky charm to the cozy mystery vibe. I couldn’t put it down—the pacing was snappy, the tone delightfully irreverent, and the ghoulish Greek setting gave it a unique flair.

If you’re in the mood for something light, funny, and a little ghostly, Family Ghouls is a great pick. It’s like sipping ouzo with a ghost at your side—unexpected, oddly comforting, and full of character.

Laugh out loud funny

For a book about multiple murders, this is the funniest darn thing I've ever read. Allie Callas sees and talks to dead people. She also has a business finding things for people or doing detective work.

When her neighbor across the hall is murdered, she asks Allie to find out who killed her. In the course of doing that, she's involved in another murder, someone tries to kill her several times and she meets her hot upstairs neighbor who just happens to be the cop in charge of the investigation into her neighbor's murder.

You'd think with everything going on in this book, there'd be nothing to laugh at. Not so. Allies is one of the funniest narrators ever and the supporting cast is nearly as good. Go read and enjoy

Quirky romance with a dash of the paranormal.

Allie has always seen and talked to ghosts. When her neighbor dies, her ghost haunts Allie and insists that she find out what happened. Navigating her way through the surprisingly seedy Greek island of Merope, Allie meets a cadre of odd characters and must find her way through some confusing and complicated relationships to find out what happened.

For those who enjoy snarky dialogue, romance with paranormal overtones, this one might be for you. At the end of the story, however, there were one or two loose ends that were never resolved. I'd like to know who the Man in Black was and what his connection to Allie is, for example.

Four stars for this fun romance read.

This is a new series from Alex A. King, who writes a couple of other series set in Greece. Like those series this one is steeped in Greek culture, but it has a new component of a main character who sees and talks to ghosts. In this case, her next door neighbor, whose body she has just found, although she often communicates with long dead ghosts. Her business is finding things for people, both things they want to buy (like the last piece of their special china set), or proof of their spouse's infidelity. This debut book in this series has a pretty convoluted and entertaining plot, as well as some likable and funny characters. I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here.

Most important point, I enjoyed this book, and will read most anything this author writes. To the best of my knowledge, I never thought of this book as a cozy, there was language, sex talk and innuendo galore, but it kept to it's story and I never got bored of put off. There was a whole slew of characters to keep track of, and it seemed important that you disliked most of them, but they kept the story moving. I thoroughly enjoyed the taste I got from the story of what it's like to live on a Greek island and look forward to more of that. that said, I was surprised in the end, didn't guess who actually done it till the very end. Bravo. give this book a try.

TW this book contains repeated use of derogatory descriptors for a little person, against that characters repeated wishes.
The re are also many jokes and comments made at this characters expense.
I can not comment on the nature the author ment these incidents but thought I should warn people.

A murder mystery where the murdered come back as ghosts, set on a greek island. It's mainly quite easy reading fun. There is some murder and intreague, some romance and sexual tension, humor and wit.
It's not deep thinking and is a bit too problematic in places for me. I'm not invested in the characters other than the lead victim.

The editing is horrible! Don't let that stop you though because the story is witty and entertaining. It's a lite read and something great to enjoy between heavy stories. This author has a very easy style to read, it flows well. They are witty and creative. I've read a couple of their other books, not the ghouls. They are also based in Greece. The culture differences included are fun to read and learn about. I will probably eventually read all of this series and the mobster series because they are so fun!

A funny, well written book

This novel has a wild mix of features and characters - it's a murder mystery, a ghost story, a romance, a primer in Greek swear words and stars a hilarious main character who has the ability to see and talk to ghosts. Aside from some gratuitous violence (how do so many heroines survive and bounce back from getting repeatedly knocked out?), the story line is always amusing and very creative. The author has a real knack for inventing new turns of phrase for common fictional occurrences.

The story itself is ho-hum, but it is at least a proper stand-alone narrative. The talking to ghosts is entertaining. The background detail of the setting is much more interesting. The text is sprinkled with Greek words, usually obvious from context or explained. I assume the author knows what she's doing, but I was surprised to see one misspelled twice - possibly it's a dialect thing. The love interest piqued my fancy, but there wasn't much of it. Some other relationships were also clearly going to be developed in later books. Overall, a pleasant meaningless read.

I’m stopping with book one

This book reads a lot like the Stephanie Plum series. So much so that I Googled to see if this was a pen name for Janet Evanovich. This girl is a PI rather than a bounty hunter but they get into the same situations. There’s a grumpy little person. The police departments finds the girls amusing. There’s a good looking cop and a guy in black that will be love interests, will she or won’t she? Stephanie never chose between Morelli the cop and Ranger (man in black) and JE is on book 27. I can’t read anymore of either series.

Murder mystery

Set on a Greek island, this cute and funny novel progresses well, with good action. Major character does come across as vapid at times, resulting in chuckles. A page or two of the Greek swear words might have helped.

As I am a gatherer of books, I collect books and ebooks from a variety of sources: Goodreads wins, Bookhub, BookFunnel, emails from authors and publishers, and others. I do lose track of their sources. But, as a reader, I feel I should give an honest, unencumbered review for all I read.

This one actually fell at about 2.5 stars, but it was good enough to bump to 3. It was a fun read and an interesting mystery, but keeping all of the characters straight was a challenge. And sometimes it fell way out of the cozy category with language and sex (way out!) but it was still a funny read. I enjoyed the paranormal aspects so that helped with the higher rating. Not sure if I will read another one in the series, but glad I chose to go with this one.
